The Radio Caroline Story Review

The Radio Caroline Story

Tom Lodge writes a very interesting history book on Radio Caroline. I grew up in the small town of Sharon, Pa on the Ohio state line dring the golden years of rock. While in high school during the early 1960's we would listen to our favorite top 40 DJs such as the 50,000 watt clear channel DJs, Dick Biondi from WLS Chy Town, "Cousin Brucie" from WABC New York and our local number one DJ, "Boots Bell" from 1000 watt WHOT in Youngstown, Ohio. The youth in Great Britian didn't have this freedom because of government owned radio. Radio Coroline changed all that in 1964. I became a listener of Radio Coroline while stationed in Nuremberg Germany 1966-1967. The samll transistor radio pulled the rock and roll music out of the air, even with a waek signal, was better than our own government controlled Armed Forces Radio in Nuremberg. Tom's book tells the whole story from the beginning or Radio Caroline until the govenment forced the station to close.

This is the Radio Caroline Story. The story of a youth battle with the British government. The Music that those four years unleashed, still reverberates around the world today. Names such as Jagger, Clapton, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page, are household names. Radio Caroline opened the floodgates, with 23 million listeners, thumbing its nose at the British government, braking the monopoly of the BBC, invading America and creating a stage for music, record companies, fashion, and above all the freedom to have fun. "It's a terrific little book!" said Steven Van Zandt, of The Bruce Springsteen E Street Band, The Sopranos and "Little Steven's Underground Garage", radio show. Yes, this is a modern David-and-Goliath story, this story of youth, music and fun, this adventure, whose echoes can still be heard in the music and songs that exploded forth during that special moment, that brief moment of freedom. This was...The Ship That Rocked The World!
