This replaces my high-end Yamaha RX-V890; I needed 2 optical audio inputs. I tested all the functions and I am totally impressed and satisfied with my purchase. What is most important, is to have good speakers. Great quality is no longer a luxury. A better surprise, this is a 2006 model. WOW!

Take the next step in home theater performance with the Yamaha HTR-5930 digital surround receiver, which boasts 5.1 channels (110 watts x 5) of amplification and a host of high-end features. The receiver is built around Yamaha's proprietary surround sound technology and a powerful 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter that maximizes the signal quality, ensuring that everything from two-channel audio sources to 5.1-channel DVDs sound rich, immersive, and dynamic. Movie and music buffs will dig the HTR-5930's Digital Sound Processing (DSP), Yamaha's means of simulating the acoustics of a concert hall, movie theater, or rock concert hall in the comfort of your own home. The Cinema DSP's four programs includes Movie Dramatic, Movie Spacious, Game, and TV Sports, each of which creates an optimum sound field for a specific type of programming. The Music DSP modes, meanwhile, range from 2-Channel Stereo to Concert Hall to Roxy Theatre, the latter of which reproduces the dynamic music environment of one of L.A.'s legendary rock clubs. And, of course, the HTR-5930 handles standard processing for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro Logic II sources.
What really makes the HTR-5930 tick, however, are the extras, such as Silent Cinema, a Yamaha-exclusive technology that lets you enjoy multichannel music or movie sound through ordinary headphones, and a night listening mode that lowers the volume during loud passages so the kids don't jolt awake after hearing explosions and other special effects from the next room. Plus, the HTR-5930 not only comes with a standard AM/FM tuner, but is also XM satellite radio ready. All you need is a separately sold XM antenna and a subscription to XM satellite radio and you're set.
Additional features include a virtual surround sound mode, A or B speaker selection, a sleep timer, and a Set menu that lets you optimize the receiver to suit your individual home theater system.
With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the HTR-5930 can accommodate several digital sources such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite systems, and much more. The rear panel options include two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital input; three HDTV-compatible component video inputs and one output; four composite video inputs and two outputs; and two analog audio inputs and one output. Also present is a 5.1 multichannel input.
The HTR-5930 measures 17.12 by 5.94 by 12.44 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty.

(More customer reviews)I bought this MP3 player for my 9 year old son and he really likes it. It is small, so it doesn't take up much room which is good. You can also transfer the music and pictures easily to the player. The few draw backs that I saw were 1) if you like to really listen to your player, the battery will need to be recharged daily; 2) if you are getting this player for the movie feature, I don't think that it would be worth it because it will only accept one special format and ;3) when you put your songs on the player, it stores the songs as one long list of songs. You have to scroll down the entire list in order to find a particular song. It would have been good if you could place groups of songs in a folder.
All that being said, I still think that is a good player for the price. It sounds really good if you have some good headphone. I do recommend this player if you are looking for a player for the music and not the other features.

The Media: Journalism In Crisis Review

(More customer reviews)The Media: Journalism in Crisis, is apparently a companion book for a documentary, and it reads like one. A minimal amount of text discussing a particular subject is made, with the remainder of chapters being descriptions of a person, a quotation from said person, and their photograph. This is extremely distracting and, like television today, makes it difficult and prevents me from thinking or paying attention to what is being said.
A good book, in my opinion, will give some sort of brief history of journalism in its myriad forms, and then demonstrate how it's changed and how, as the title suggests, it's in crisis. Based on what I've read, it's not journalism that's in crisis, but this book definitely is. Fractured, hard to follow, at times incorrect (e.g. cable wasn't "born to get viewed out of the clutches of the then big business at ABC, CBS and NBC." It was born to help get these broadcasts to areas that were unreachable due to local geography... this is Media 101 for any media student.)
Is Journalism changing dramatically? Are opinions invading news? Are people no longer getting their information from a small number of "trusted sources"? Is it an interesting topic? Absolutely on all counts. But this is not the book you should read if you want to learn about this important topic.

Talk Radio for Authors: Getting Interviews Across the U.S. and Canada Review

(More customer reviews)The cover of the book gives the appearance of a "how to manual." It is not (just in case you think it may have ANY "how-to" in it). This is a directory (think "phone book") of "radio" talk shows, assuming that radio now means any ongoing recording or broadcast over the internet, terrestrial, and/or satellite. It is a personal collection of several shows the author has cultivated relationships with, but is by no means complete, nor anywhere near being so. Is it worth the investment? Yes. But I say that as an avid collector of knowledge, and not as a casual book buyer. If you are looking for a "how-to get on the radio" book, pick up Joe Sabah's "How to Get on Radio Talk Shows All Across America." THAT is a complete, step-by-step manual (which also comes with a database of over 900 terrestrial radio talk shows) on "how-to-do-it." THIS BOOK has the personal opinions of several hosts, all saying the same thing ("be fun, interesting, cheerfully answer ANY question we throw at you..."), and is a breakdown of "radio stations" (mostly internet radio)by categories. If this were 500 pages thicker, I would give it 5 stars. As it is, it is more of an overview than a required reference. I still recommend you buy it if you are at all serious about doing radio interviews. But do not buy it thinking that you will learn HOW to research, contact, pitch show ideas, or give good interviews. This is ONLY a listing of different places you may be interviewed, based on your target demographic. Use it as a springboard for more research, not as your "go to guide."

Zinwell ZIN-5005HD "ZinTV" 3-in-1 Networking-Ready 1080p Full HD Multimedia Player/Streamer/Torrent Downloader, Free Internet TV/Radio, Black Review

(More customer reviews)I have the Zinwell and a pair of Western Digital TV Live so I'll compare and contrast.
Setup is super easy with both. Connect to your TV or receiver via HDMI cable, attach an external hard drive (not included) and go into the menus to configure your audio and video option. You can also connect these to a wired network and Western Digial has certified a number of USB wireless adapters that require a bit more knowledge to setup. The documentation from both companies could be a lot better so I'll call this one a tie.
The WDTV Live is a bit slower to start up but directory changes are much-much faster than the Zinwell. I suspect because the WD indexes and caches directories of any external drives while the Zinwell has to reread it each time. The difference in speed is absolutely huge. Basically performance wise the Zinwell feels really-really doggy to me. Advantage WDTV Live.
The WD has a much cleaner and better looking interface compared to the Zinwell's ugly menus over a /Linux/like/file/system/. I can live with ugly as long as it works but in 2011 I shouldn't have to. Advantage WDTV Live.
The WDTV Live outputs 5.1 audio in DTS format over HDMI, toslink or coax; the Zinwell outputs raw bits or stereo over HDMI. If your Receiver supports DTS then advantage WDTV.
The Zinwell's remote is a tad better but much larger. Both media players work seamlessly with Harmony remotes. Advantage Zinwell.
Both play nearly every popular audio and video format either from your own external hard drive or across a wired network. However both struggle trying to play hi-def video across a network connection. I find that hi-def vidio from an external hard drive works pretty well with the WDTV Live but never could get the Zinwell to output anything but stereo without the sound breaking up. Advantage WDTV Live.
The Zinwell promises access to the full DVD/BD menus but I never could get menus to work and found the separate audio selection button to be stubborn. With the Western Digital you do have to get used to using the "options" button to access audio and subtitle choices but they work. Slight advantage WDTV Live.
Bottom line the network media player market is still immature with many newer products coming down the pike but for now I consider the Zinwell a no-go for my needs.
