Thank you Terry for all your hard work in producing this first rate manual for Icon M802 owners/operators. I am happy to have been able to help in testing the procedures in the draft manual. We purchased the Icom 802 originally for safety reasons and for communications while at sea or at an anchorage. The radio is great. However, it was difficult to get any information from Icom's supplied manual for installation and operation procedures. I'm not a dummy but the manual was very hard to understand and did not seem to be laid out in a logical manner. Luckily Terry was writing the manual in the La Paz area when we were also there and was very patient and helpful, answering my questions for the hook up and operation of our new 802. His book is like having a technician sitting beside you. You ask a question and by looking at the table of contents, the answers are easily found. The book is like Terry is talking to you telling you step by step what to do, and how to do it correctly. He assumes I know nothing and teaches bit by bit so I could become competent. Terry's book is beside the navigation table as a ready reference whenever needed.
Icom would do a great customer service by supplying this manual to all purchasers of their M802's. It would pay for itself in less technical help requests and/or returns by frustrated customers trying to understand how to operate their new radios. The customers would also be a lot happier with their purchase and make better use of the many included features which the M802 offers.
Well done Terry

Over the past few years cruising on our sailing vessel Sunnyside, I keep running into sailors that have installed an HF SSB radio and cannot understand how to operate the radio because of the manual assuming significant knowledge. After teaching cruisers how to use their radio, they find out how simple it really is to use HF SSB.So, I decided two write a made simple manual, not to replace the ICOM manual, but to aid in cruisers in the understanding of the radio. ICOM makes great radios and the IC - M802 is the best in the industry. I hope when this manual is available, there will be many more IC - M802s on cruising boats so that we can get full advantage of the HF DSC system Icom established in the design of the IC - M802 transceiver. When I taught at Columbia Basin College in Washington, it became clear to me, after repeated beatings by the students, that what seemed simple to me is not for someone that I was asking to follow procedures. My students taught me that when writing procedures, keep it simple and assume no knowledge by the end user.My goal for this book was to keep the procedures and layout of the book as simple as possible for a complex radio and include additional information that seems to help other cruisers understand the concept of HF SSB radio.
