Sony D-FJ041 CD Walkman Portable CD Player with AM/FM Tuner Review

Sony D-FJ041 CD Walkman Portable CD Player with AM/FM Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Walkman by Sony offers music lovers the opportunity to listen to music files stored on a CD-R, a regular CD (of course), a CD-RW--AND there's even a digital AM and FM radio tuner! While this lacks certain features that a music aficionado might want (like the ATRAC system that some CD players have), this Walkman is really a very good choice for most people including myself. I have more than one Walkman but this is the one I use most often for when I am "on the go;" it's the one I don't mind if it accidentally gets a little bit banged up over time.
You can preset up to twenty FM stations and you can preset up to 10 AM stations--but this won't pick up AM stations very well unless they're located relatively close to where you are. However, that's still good for this price range. This Walkman uses two AA batteries and you get a good amount of play time out of the batteries if you pick good ones. It weighs barely more than seven ounces--great!
At first glance the controls on the Walkman itself appear slightly confusing but after about five minutes tops you learn all the important and most commonly used functions. The controls also make it easy to do basic things such as adjusting the sound, starting a CD and stopping it. The instruction manual is fairly clear as well. The Walkman does have "playback modes" but I rarely use them so I can't comment on that.
Unfortunately, I noticed some disappointments. The controls are rather small so you need to be careful of how you touch them with your fingers. Finally, this type of ear phone set hurts my ears almost from the very start of listening to a CD on this Walkman. I strongly suggest you purchase a better quality headset or earphones that will be more comfortable. (I have to take off one star for that--sorry!)
Overall, music lovers will be very pleased with this affordable Walkman. The features work reliably. The quality of the sound is excellent; and it can handle quite a few presets for different radio stations.

Sony D-NF340 CD Walkman & MP3 Player w/FM Tuner Review

Sony D-NF340 CD Walkman and MP3 Player w/FM Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After searching the net for a day, this was the best CD player I could find. I bought the unit as a backup for my (still functioning well) Sony DNF-430, a unit I'm in love with but I am concerned that when it eventually dies (as we all must), there will no longer be a decent standard CD player at all.
This unit seems to be the successor to the 430. Several improvements have been made over the 430:
It uses 2 batteries instead of 1 for longer play between battery swaps
The controls are much better -- transport function controls that were twitchy on the 430 are larger and better laid out
The remote is easier to use, and the controls are laid out identically to those on the top of the player
It "remembers" where you left off playing a CD and starts from there after being stopped OR (new) even after the door has been opened
The display is much easier to read, especially from an angle
The case seems more solid
The price has been substantially reduced
On the downside vs 430:
Maximum volume not quite as loud as the 430, and very high or very low frequencies are not rendered quite as well
The weather, AM radio, and analog TV receivers have been dropped (doubt many used these functions)
The LCD readout of song titles and artists on regular CDs is gone
No ATRACS (Sony's old compression scheme that had no real advantage over MP3s)
The parametric equalizer is gone (really only useful with low quality headphones)
The body is noticably heavier and larger both in thickness and diameter
The transport buttons are much easier to accidentally press when carrying it about as a portable (use the "hold" button underneath to prevent this).
The remote connector has changed, so only the remote that comes with the unit may be used
Cheezy earbuds and a car cassette adaptor are no longer included
Like the DNF430, the transport mechanism is a bit noisy, although no louder than the sound leakage you would get with good open-air headphones (recommended). No AC power adaptor is included, but there is provision for plugging in separately purchased 4.5 volt AC or car DC adaptor. And opening the lid to change CDs is still a bit awkward. The anti-skip mechanism still works flawlessly.
The important thing, the reason for the five stars, is the sound quality. While sonically not quite up to the DNF430, you still can plug in a pair of good headphones like the Grado SR80 and you've got yourself a personal sound system that rivals a good home theater setup. Other reviewers have spoken of "muddy sound" and "hiss"; I can detect none such. The low distortion and high frequency range does reveal flaws in source material that are not evident when that material is played on a lesser unit. On the other hand, I have heard distinct background playing (eg., a trumpet way down in the mix of a Grateful Dead song, the sound of a pick against guitar strings) I'd never heard on lesser players. When playing big band or orchestra CDs, it individuates instruments so you hear each distinctly instead of a single smear of orchesteral sound. This all refers to standard CD's. I do not use the FM or MP3 features. If you care about good sound, you realize that MP3 compression degrades sound.
Bottom line: for car or personal listening of standard or burned CDs while not too active, this is a wonderful device. While the size, weight, and easily triggered controls make it less than ideal for physically active listening (I still listen to my hearty old Panasonic while working in the garden), it is still quite serviceable in that mode.
I think Sony made a lot of sensible design decisions here, and I hope they sell enough of these to make it worthwhile to keep manufacturing them.

Sony D-FJ61 Portable CD Player Review

Sony D-FJ61 Portable CD Player

This summer, I was telling my eleven-year old niece that it would be nice to have a cd and fm walkman in one. She looked at me like I was so out of it and told me it already existed.
Well, you know Sony would be responsible! I absolutely love my walkman!! I have owned several models over the years and the more Sony builds, the better they become. This model does not skip at all and mine has been through the gym and on hikes! When you get tired of the disc, you just switch over to the tuner. You have the option to program stations (not a new feature of course) and they come in crystal clear. I just love the option, especially when you are planning on extended use.
Very durable as usual and a nice strap to slip over your hand for easy/secure handling.
Sony equates quality!

Aiwa XP-R210 Portable CD Player with FM/AM Radio Review

Aiwa XP-R210 Portable CD Player with FM/AM Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I purchased my Aiwa Walkman one year ago, I felt like I had made an excellent choice. I had researched all of the different AM/FM radio CD players, and I felt that the Aiwa XPR210 was the best one for me. I use it constantly and now, one year later, I know for a fact that it was an EXCELLENT choice. The radio is great and I find myself using it whenever I am without a CD that I want to listen to. It works very well and I know that if I do ever get a new Walkman, it will have to be one with a digital tuner. The battery life display is excellent because it lets me know whether or not I need to take any extra batteries with me if I'm going on a trip. I have no complaints about the playback that I get with a pair of batteries either. I have tried to make this Walkman skip but I have not been able to do so. It has a great EASS 48 Second Anti-Skip system that definitely gets its job done. I have run, jogged, and hiked with this Walkman and it has never skipped. I would highly suggest this product to anyone who is looking to make a smart purchase on a more than reliable Walkman.

Sony D-NF400 ATRAC Walkman Portable CD Player with Digital AM / FM / TV / Weather Tuner Review

Sony D-NF400 ATRAC Walkman Portable CD Player with Digital AM / FM / TV / Weather Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Strengths:
Feature-rich, Sony quality, surprisingly decent headphones, excellent skip-free technology, long battery life
Weaknesses:
Slightly awkward button placement, sluggish (at best) SonicStage software
Summary:
I spent quite a bit of time in the week or so before I bought this product researching the main players in the MP3-CD field. While my favorite based on everything I'd read was the iRiver iMP-550, I decided that I could get everything I wanted out of a player for less than $100. The features that I sought the most were:
1) an AM/FM tuner
2) the ability to fast-forward within an MP3 song, which I found many of the lower-end players could not do; and,
3) a jog dial or other implement that made navigating through songs and folders fairly simple.
I ended up narrowing my search to Sony and Panasonic products, and eventually went with Sony because I was curious about their ATRAC technology, which I'll get into in a bit.
STRENGTHS:
For the most part, Sony is going to put out decent products, and this player seems to be no exception in terms of quality and workmanship. I don't have any complaints yet, having owned it for about four months. The D-NF400 has every feature I had looked for in my initial research, and then some. The TV and weather bands have turned out to be more entertaining than I would have guessed.
I didn't spend any time actually listening to other MP3-CD players, so I don't have a basis for comparison when it comes to volume output. I can say, however, that with all of my 192kb songs and most of my 128kb music, I can get plenty of sound at about 3/4 volume capacity even while commuting by train. At home or in my quiet office, I'm often only at about 1/2 the volume capacity. Although I've replaced the stock headphones with a set of Sony MDR-V150s (ear-muff style), the stock headphones are nearly as loud and reasonably clear except at very high volumes. They also let in a lot more outside noise, however, so if you really love your music, you're better off replacing them.
So far, I've not heard a skip from this player. As I said, my most frequent usage in on the train, which isn't the smoothest ride in the world. I've also hooked it up to my car stereo via a cassette tape adapter and driven all over the mean streets and freeways of LA without a hiccup. And, of course, since I commute, I do a fair amount of walking with it between the train and subway. So I'm impressed that I haven't had any issues at all here.
I haven't had the player long enough to truly comment on battery life except to say that I've put in approximately 20-25 hours of active play time, and the battery indicator still looks full. Certainly nothing for me to complain about. (Update: the first set of batteries lasted approximately 85 hours split between listening to ATRAC CDs and the FM radio -- I'd say it exceeds expectations.)
WEAKNESSES:
I'll start with the biggest weakness, which is the SonicStage software. I've read reviews from several other people who have used it who have called it completely useless, and I can understand why. This software is designed to allow you to compress your music even beyond MP3 compression while still maintaining high-quality sound. Sony claims that at 48kbps, you can have up to 490 songs on one CD.
Now, let me start by saying that when the software does work, it does an excellent job. Using the default setting of 64kbps, I've recorded several CDs with over 300 songs on them. There is something very pleasing about being able to store your entire library of certain genres of music on a single CD. And although I'm no audiophile, I haven't noticed an appreciable difference in quality in my music, most of which was ripped at 192kbps.
The software operation itself leaves a lot to be desired, though. My main complaint is that it is e x t r e m e l y s l o w . The conversion from MP3 to Sony's ATRAC format is painful. The first CD I burned, which had 283 songs on it, took over 5 hours just for the conversion process. Thankfully, in this day of 100GB+ hard drives, SonicStage will keep the converted files on your hard drive so that if, for some odd reason, you ever needed to burn the same songs on to another CD, you would not have to repeat this tedious process.
SonicStage is also buggy (it crashed on me after almost four hours of a conversion job because I had managed to exceed the space limit for the CD I was trying to burn -- something it would have been handy to know *beforehand*). Also, I wish that Sony had allowed you to convert your proprietary SonicStage files to MP3s. Be warned that if you use SonicStage to rip your CDs, you're stuck with the music in that format. If you use MP3s for anything else (such as on your computer at work or perhaps an MP3 CD player in your car), you're better off ripping to MP3s first and then letting SonicStage convert them for you. All in all, though, when the software works, it does a decent job.
The only other issue I've had with the D-NF400 is with the design of two of the buttons. The jog dial for navigation consists of the left, right, up and down directions, with a play/pause button right in the center. Because the buttons are so small, I've often found myself trying to skip to the next song and instead pausing the current song inadvertently. The other odd button is the one used for switching between FM/AM/TV/Weather Band. It's a flimsly-feeling thin rubber bar, and it just adds a cheap feeling to the player when everything else is so solid.
SUMMARY:
Overall, I have had a great experience with the player, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who prefers this format to the stored memory MP3 players. Good job, Sony!

Spin your commercial CDs, your homemade music CDs of almost any stripe, or listen to the radio, TV, or weather-band transmissions on Sony's versatile, full-circle D-NF400 Walkman portable CD player. The player includes SonicStage software, which lets you take full advantage of ATRAC3plus (Sony's proprietary music-compression technology) when making custom MP3 CDs on your computer. Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and--thanks to Sony's great work in DSP efficiency--more than 85 hours of ATRAC3plus CD playback or up to 50 hours of audio CD playback on two AA batteries (not included).
The D-NF400 offers a two-line dot-matrix display, full ID3 tag recognition, and bookmark playback (which lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button). CD Text support displays artist and title information for compatible commercial audio CDs.
ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality, similar in concept to the MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats. With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kilobits per second (kbps), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps). MP3 compatibility extends from 16 to 320 kbps files.
The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3s on your PC's hard drive and burns them to CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.
The D-NF400 offers a whopping 51 station presets, which works out to 30 FM, 10 AM, 4 weather-band, and 7 TV stations so you're never far from your favorite channels. You can hook the player up with your home system through an optional analog stereo "Y" interconnect.
Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-NF400's heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high temperatures, especially when you're using it outdoors or in a vehicle.
Digital Mega Bass Sound boosts your music's low end without the loss of high clarity or the addition of low distortion, and there's also a built-in equalizer with three preset curves and one customizable setting. Sony's automatic volume limiter system conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of two settings. The player works with an optional AC/DC 4.5-volt power adapter (AC-E45HG or -E45A).
What's in the Box The CD player, MDR-027LP stereo headphones, a CD-ROM (SonicStage software), a user's manual, and warranty information.

Some of the reviews here sound like they were churned out by David Manning-like frauds. Anyway, this is Sony's best cd walkman in awhile. Their previous premium model, the D-FJ787 was a piece of junk because the tuning and playback controls could only be accessed using an external, wired remote control you had to plug your headphones into to listen - resulting in a MESS of wires. Fortunately Sony moved the controls back onto the player and I must say, they are creatively placed on rings around the center of the lid's face. The only thing I don't like about this player is the digital display: it does not give you an accurate seconds playback (off by a second). A minor complaint but it shouldn't deter you from picking one of these up.

Panasonic SL-SV550 CD/MP3 Player Review

Panasonic SL-SV550 CD/MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tested this player (SL-SV550) with both a headphone and with external speakers (Cambridge Soundworks). And I picked three songs to play in both formats (mp3 and audio). They are "I believe (Brothers and Sisters)", "Hero (Enriques)", and "Another perfect day (American Hi-Fi)" So far, this unit has performed up to my expectation.
MP3 playback: MP3 sound from this player is pretty good. In my opinion, it plays mp3 better than regular audio CD. Bass boot helps mp3 playback as well. The mp3 start up time is a little long (10-15 secs), because it scans all directories on the CD.
Audio CD playback: Noise is noticable. I'd recommend a noise cancelling headphone. Sound quality is very average (not good/not bad).
Radio reception: Unlike most FM tuners, the SL-SV550 can do fine tunning. You can change FM/AM frequency step (0.20 , 0.10 , and 0.05 Mhz for FM and 10 , 9 kHz for AM). That means you can use it worldwide. In overall, radio sounds ok. Bass boost is not recommended in radio reception.
With the price under [money], I am happy with my decision :)

Panasonic's SL-SV550 makes it easy to enjoy music with the freedom that comes from MP3 CD playback, extended battery life, a built-in FM/AM radio, and high-powered anti-skip technology. The onboard digital synthesizer tuner stores 30 stations in memory (20 FM and 10 AM) and assures that stations stay put once they're selected. Panasonic's exclusive No-Skip technology helps prevent interruptions from jostling during active use. No Skip's unique construction uses rubber brushings to absorb shock, while an anti-skip mechanism and an anti-skip digital servo further prevent read errors; a 48-second memory reserve provides added back up.
Now, battery changes will be fewer and farther between thanks to Panasonic's PowerLast high-efficiency power system, which combines an efficient motor with low-load circuitry for playback time of up to 35 hours on two AA batteries (during MP3 playback). CD playback abilities include 24-track random-access programming; repeat and resume (which picks up where the unit left off when last stopped); and skip/search, and memory/recall. A hold switch prevents accidental starting, stopping, or track skipping during use or transport. The unit boasts a thin design with operation keys and LCD laid out logically on its top cover.

Sony D-FJ003 CD Walkman with AM/FM Tuner (Pink) Review

Sony D-FJ003 CD Walkman with AM/FM Tuner (Pink)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted the reliability and quality of a Sony, and a CD player AND radio in one unit was very important to me, but I did not want to pay a lot as not too long ago I had purchased a Panasonic CD player/radio, and the CD player conked out on me pretty rapidly. This Walkman is durable (I have dropped it a few times, and the CD didn't even skip when dropped, and the unit still works wonderfully!). It is also relatively simple to operate. However, I do not like the buttons or display window much. The buttons are hard to press one-handed, and the display is hard to read most of the time. The buttons and display are located on the edge/circumference of the Walkman rather than on the nice, broad top, making it difficult to access them. NEVERTHELESS, if you want a quality Sony product at a good price and you aren't terribly bothered by button or display ergonomics (I am not), this is a Walkman for you. Great value for the money!

Sony D-NS707F S2 Sports ATRAC Walkman Portable CD Player with Digital Tuner (AM/FM/TV/Weather) Review

Sony D-NS707F S2 Sports ATRAC Walkman Portable CD Player with Digital Tuner (AM/FM/TV/Weather)
Average Reviews:

This player takes CDs, including CD-Rs and CD-RWs with 20+ hours of mp3 on them, in stride. It plays them through, and does fast forward and rewind about as well as my solid-state mp3 player. Utilizing CD-RWs, I use this unit instead of a juke box. I still use my solid-state mp3 player only because it is more compact than this unit. As I prefer having TV audio available, no other player/receiver would have entirely satisfied me. The impressive technical accomplishment of this product will cause me to favor Sony products in future.
The exterior design does leave things to be desired. The control buttons are cheesy and hard to operate. The display is too small. Instead of a carrying case or an anchor for a strap, there is a stupidly designed protruding flexible handle that makes the unit twice as bulky as it needs to be.

Spin your commercial CDs, your homemade music CDs of almost any stripe, or listen to the radio, TV, or weather-band transmissions with Sony's versatile, full-circle D-NS707F S2 Sports-styled Walkman portable CD player. Designed for rugged outdoor use, the player features active control playback operation so you can make changes to your program literally while you're on the run. Sony's "h.ear" clip-on headphones are designed for streamlined comfort.Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-NS707F's water-resistant body and heat-resistant lid helps protect it against the elements, with rubber gaskets, bushings, and splash-resistant seals that help keep out water, moisture, and dirt.Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and--thanks to Sony's great work in DSP efficiency--more than 75 hours of ATRAC3plus CD or more than 50 hours of audio CD playback from 2 AA batteries (not included). The D-NS707F's 2-line dot-matrix display is built right into its handstrap, offering full ID3 tag recognition, and bookmark playback (which lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button). CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC's hard drive and burns them to recordable CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps). The D-NS707F delivers a whopping 51 station presets, which works out to 30 FM, 10 AM, 4 WB, and 7 TV stations so you're never far from your favorite channels. You can hook the player up with your home system through an optional analog stereo "Y" interconnect.Digital Mega Bass Sound boosts your music's low end without high clarity and low distortion, and there's also a built-in equalizer with 3 preset curves and 1 customizable setting. Sony's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of two settings. The player also works with an optional AC/DC 4.5V power adapter (AC-E45HG or -E45A).What's in the Box CD player, h.ear clip-on stereo headphones, CD-ROM (SonicStage software), a user's manual, and warranty information.

Panasonic SLSW869V Shockwave Portable CD Player with Radio (Silver & Blue) Review

Panasonic SLSW869V Shockwave Portable CD Player with Radio (Silver and Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Often i was having trouble deciding which discman to get: The choices were the non-rugged versions of discman, with great features such as a remote control and AM/FM tuner, or the Shockwave model, which could withstand daily abuse (I am a student, so it gets bashed around quite frequently in my backpack). However, the shockwave models never offered a headphone remote or a useful radio tuner.
I am the owner of the previous Shockwave model (the fat 10 second anti-shock model). It has served me well, but left me wanting more.
This new model incorporates the best of both worlds: feature rich, rugged design, and relatively thin cross-section, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a great discman that is almost indestructable, as far as discmans go.
PROS:
-great XBS sound from Panasonic
-super rugged design
-thin, compared to previous plastic models
-AM/FM tuner
-headphone remote (for those wondering, this was never included on any previous shockwave models)
-great, solid design, all buttons and latches feel solid, and comes with embedded handgrip
-anti-shock 4.0 40 seconds, almost skip-free
-battery life rated for over 20 hours, uses AA batteries unlike some ultraslims, that use expensive AAA batteries
-rechargable battery capable
-comes with AC adapter to save batteries

CONS:
-for those who do not require a rugged model, go for a thinner, lighter discman. Will save money and pocket weight.

Panasonic's SLSW869V ShockWave CD player/radio has a rugged aluminum shell and a thin, compact, water-resistant design for outdoor use. It has a one-touch lock-and-release system that is designed to play even when things get rough on the trail. The most important feature in this model is the Anti-Shock Memory System 4.0. This feature reduces skips before they even get to the memory buffer. It has an improved set of error-correction chips offering +100 percent and -75 percent error correction. It uses a digital servo in conjunction with a lighter and faster spindle motor that offers fast retracking speed.
For ultimate versatility, the SLSW869V has an AM/FM digitally synthesized tuner that ensures stations won't drift once they are set. You can also preset up to 30 stations, 20 FM and 10 AM, in memory. There are five preset buttons so you don't have to search for your favorite station every time.
A "hold" switch prevents you from unintentionally hitting "stop" while the CD is playing or accidentally changing the programming. In addition, you can save your batteries from drain with the power-saving auto power-off function. The batteries will last for up to 25 hours of playback. This model includes adjustable stereo headphones, an AC adapter, and a jogger grip. The Panasonic SLSW869V features 24-track random-access programming, repeat of one or all tracks, skip and search, and memory and recall keys, as well as resume play and random play.
