Yamaha TSX-70BR Desktop Audio System for iPod/iPhone (Brown) Review

Yamaha TSX-70BR Desktop Audio System for iPod/iPhone (Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a 35 year old Zenith clock radio. I told myself that someday, if this clock radio ever died, I will spoil myself and buy a Bose wave radio to replace it. Alas, that day has arrived. I went online to order my Bose wave, and learned that some IDIOT at Bose had decided it would be a good idea to eliminate all the control buttons from the unit, and control everything from a tiny little remote! This does not make the wave a good choice for use as a bedside alarm clock. Imagine trying to find which microscopic button to push to silence the alarm while you are half asleep! Nice going Bose - you just lost a sale!
Thus began my search for a replacement. I did not find anything at the local big box stores that did not look and sound cheap. Another big factor for me was the brightness of the display. Most are too bright for me - even with a dimmer function. I found this Yamaha on Amazon, and seemed a viable alternative to the Bose, so I decided to take a chance and order it. The only hesitation I had was that I could not determine if this unit had a battery back-up for the clock. I even went to Yamaha's website for this info, but could not find it there either. Apparently, there is some kind of backup system, as the instructions state the time information will be lost if unplugged for more than one week. It must have an internal capacitor of some sort - I'm guessing.
The sound is impressive! I do not own an Ipod, but I would imagine the sound quality would be even better from that source than that of the radio. It is hard to imagine the sound quality that comes out of such a small package. My wife made the comment that it sounds better than the stereo we also have in the bedroom! This unit is much smaller than I imagined, but this is a good thing. It does not take up a lot of space on my nightstand. The display brightness is adjustable, and is perfect for me on the lowest setting. It has an automatic setting that self adjusts to ambient room light, and is very legible at all settings.
Overall, I am very pleased and impressed with this system. I hope it serves me as well as my old Zenith did.

Teac CD-X60i Ultra Thin Hi-Fi System with iPod Dock Review

Teac CD-X60i Ultra Thin Hi-Fi System with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the TEAC CD-X60i yesterday and have to say that I was very satisfied with it from the moment I popped on my iTouch and turned the unit on. I was looking for a small system that would not only play cd's or FM radio, but let me listen to the music on my iTouch while it's charging on the dock. This one does/has all that.
I have to say that the TEAC CD-X60i's low price of $134 at COSTCO didn't particularly get my expectations up but the unit was already plugged in, so I turned it on, and WOW. I was impressed. A nice crisp sound with good highs and lows and a deep, rich bass (from a separate sub-woofer) that didn't drown out the other audio details, even in noisy COSTCO.
The TEAC CD-X60i is made for iPods. It comes with a remote so you can operate the unit (and some basic iPod functions) from a reasonable distance, and the entire system is easy to set up and use.
I purchased a different system previously that covered the same elements as this unit but the sound was poor. I used to get a headache listening to it and I returned it post-haste.
This unit cannot be and should not be compared to larger systems - that would be like comparing apples to oranges. Unlike larger systems, the TEAC CD-X60i is a small unit at a much lower cost, is designed for desktop, book shelf, tabletop or night stand. But don't be fooled by any of that - its sound and its features are not small in way. I'd have given it 5 stars except that the sub-woofer must remain on for any of the radio pre-sets to stay in memory (the system is put into `sleep mode'). I'm the kind of person who likes to turn everything off when not in use, so I found this to be a little disappointing. Otherwise, great unit and $134 very well spent.

Cambridge SoundWorks i525 AM/FM Table Radio with iPod Dock Review

Cambridge SoundWorks i525 AM/FM Table Radio with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I understand this radio sold for as high as $200 and at that price, one might be disappointed. Not because the sound isn't phenomenal for it's size, but because most $200 table top radios will have a sub-woofer, which the i525 does not.
But for $99, this radio exceeded my expectations. (and frankly, as a bedside music system, I'm not looking for a high volume performer. Don't get me wrong, the sound quality on this radio is very full. I'm never thinking, "wish it had a sub-woofer")
Three things set this radio apart: 1.) ipod interface is great. (my iPod is 32 GB 3rd gen touch) The i525 produces the kind of impressively rich, clean audio from an iPod one typically expects from much more expensive audio systems w/o frills! CSW attributes this superior iPod sound reproduction to something they call X-Fi Crystalizer technology, "restoring the crisp treble and bass punch erased by audio compressor processing employed to create MP3..." . All I know is "Marky likes it, and it enhances FM too".
2.) CSW has developed a reputation for audio systems with impossibly good sound given their small footprints, and i525 is no exception. Certainly, audio preference has a subjective element, yet no one should be able to quibble with tonal clarity through out the range. One is startled by the lack of any mushiness, and taut bass reproduction. As a bedside music system, it produces clear bass, mid-range and treble far beyond most clock radios. 3.) FM reception is the best I've experienced! FM reception is clean, clear and distortion free. I recently returned the AR Art1, possessing a much larger external antenna, however the reception fidelity was no where near the i525.
What about the alarm clock function? Well, to be honest, I've not set the alarm. However, even if the alarm function is "behind the curve" as some professional and reviews on this site have said, my demands are not great in this area. I simply need an alarm to wake me up reliably. HOWEVER, I will complain about no battery back-up. There's an internal power cell storing 10 mins of power, saving settings---well, for 10 mins of power interruption. That's not good enough. Battery backup should be " de rigueur" for clock radios.

Sanyo DMP-692 Dual Dock Music System for iPod and iPhone (Black) Review

Sanyo DMP-692 Dual Dock Music System for iPod and iPhone (Black)
Average Reviews:

I got this on Amazon last week. It is what I expected. Price has dropped $15 since I bought it. I also own an iLuv. This is a good bedside unit. I dock my Iphone every night and keep my Ipod docked always since I listen to music when I go to bed. For Cost/Size I am pleased with the performance. It packs a pretty good sound and has good features- especially a dimmer to lower the display illumination at night. It has a subwoofer located in the back of the unit. It also has a Dynamic Bass Booster (DBB) which enhances the sound. I wouldn't say it is superior to the iLuv. It is comparable; certainly cheaper. I am satisfied with it. It is a good bedside companion.

iLive Portable Music System/Boom Box with Docking Station and Recharger for iPod (Black) Review

iLive Portable Music System/Boom Box with Docking Station and Recharger for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

When I received the item, I unpacked it & installed the batteries. I connected my daughter's iPod and the sound quality was good. There could have been more volume, but it was ok. There wasn't any bass or treble adjustments on this. I liked how the iPod songs could be forwarded & skipped via the buttons on the dock itself. I carefully repacked it & wrapped it for a Christmas gift. When my daughter opened it, she liked it. But when she tried to listen to the radio, it was all static. The next day, the radio portion would work, and then quit again. So, I ended up returning it to the store where I bought it. This was a very bacic, no-frills type of unit, but in fairness, the price was very low as well. If the unit worked as designed, we would have kept it.

This unit drains my ipod in about an hour. Drains it completely dead, I tried it twice. Also, despite item description, this unit has no S-video or audio/video outputs at all. Even if it worked, it's too complicated to use the alarm function on a daily basis - needs much refinement.

Cambridge SoundWorks i755 Table Radio with iPod Dock

After waiting almost 4 weeks for a factory repair, they sent a second radio instead of repairing the first one. After about 2 months, the second radio has the same problem -- the clock display freezes, radio stops functioning as an alarm clock, and the on/off buttons on the radio and the remote control do not work. Tech Support says to unplug, push the on/off button several times during two hours, and then replug to power. Same routine as for first radio; it worked for a while and then same symptom.
They will NOT give a refund after 30-days, even though the problem I called about was originally less than 30 days!

What follows are notes from the first radio, that also failed in the identical way.

iLive ITP100B Two Channel Bar Speaker System with Docking and Recharging Station for iPhone and iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

I am using this as a speaker bar for my home theater system that is on my covered deck. I wanted something I could use for my I-Pod as well as amplify sound for my projection TV. I also wanted something I could easily mount on a wall in a small space that I had available.
This works with both my 2nd and 3rd generation I-Pod Touch. It has red/white RCA plugs where I have audio input from my Direct TV box.
Even at higher volumes the sound is great with no significant distortions. The sound is full with without a tinny quality. Bass is not very full but I would not expect it to be.
When buying this unit I was looking for multi-functionality. This unit will mainly be used for playing tunes during parties and for sporting event sound. If I was doing more movies and needed more theater sound for I would have gone with a Vizo sound bar that I have seen/heard at one of the warehouse stores. Update 11/28/2010
I have been using this for almost 5 months now
I'm still pleased with overall function and sound quality.
I have not attempted to 'max out' the volume but for my deck (which is 16x25 feet) this provides more than enough volume.
Again I want to stress that if you are looking for high quality sound for a home theater where movies are being played consider a different sound bar. This unit provides great sound for general music and sports -- it does not provide good base.
However for such a small speaker it does provide good general sound and good amplification with out hissing or a tinny quality.
For my purposes this is an excellent product at a very good price.

Wow, First of all I love the option of 2 day delivery, it was well worth it. Second ,the Pyle PHS901CW exceeded my expectations. The unit is well made and looks more like a piece of furniture, than an Ipod docking station. Third point, the unit sounds great as is right out of the box. I'm not a Bose fan which is what most e-tailers and retailers push as the best docking station out there. This unit has more punch and features than it's competitors. The remote works very and my IPhone charges while playing music. I give this unit an 8.5 out of 10. Please keep in mind I have yet to see and hear a 10. I look forward to Pyle's next gen. unit.

This home theater tower brings a beautiful, powerful sound system, iPod player and charger to any room of your home. The 600 watt system is just booming with power, thanks to dual 3.5" tweeters, 3.5" mid-range drivers, and a 300-watt subwoofer that packs a massive punch. Simply plug in your iPod (classic, nano, and touch models are all compatible) and you're ready to go - plus, this unit charges your iPod, so the party only stops when you run out of music! But when you do, just turn on the built-in FM radio to keep the music flowing. There's also an alarm clock so you can wake up to your favorite music. Don't have an iPod? This unit is also equipped with a stereo RCA aux jacks on back - so you can plug in almost anything with stereo sound. Use the front panel touch controls or the included remote to adjust the volume, bass, treble, and even sort through your iPod's music. The blue LCD display is bright and crisp, and the cherry wood finish is elegant and clean. Includes a 110 V AC to 21 V DC adaptor.

Philips wOOx Dock and Remote for iPhone/iPod Review

Philips wOOx Dock and Remote for iPhone/iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own this clock radio purchased at BB. My objective was to find a stylish clock radio that would fit on my smallish night stand. It had to have dual alarms - 5 day and weekend mode; and be able to have choice of either buzzer alarm or radio. The display must have dim settings. This Philips model does all that and a lot more.
Little did I know the search would take me to so many stores. Nowadays, clock radios are an afterthought. Most are cheap-o looking and garish. I couldn't believe the poor quality of clock radios out there. This Philips model fits the bill for me with a couple of caveats - see below. Although an iPod dock wasn't on my required list, the choices for clock radios are so much better than without it.
Here's what I like:
* Great sound from such a small unit
* Small footprint on the night stand - most other clock radios with iPod docks are a bit large
* Contemporary looking - looks nice with my black iPod Classic
* Easy to use - albeit it helps to read the manual
* Remote to set time and alarm, as well as play iPod
* Charges iPod while in dock
* Gradual alarm from whisper-quiet to loud
* Ability to use either the (gentle) buzzer, radio or iPod for the alarm
* Feels sturdy
* Did I mention the great sound?
Here are those caveats:
* The main purpose of the clock radio is to tell the time. The numbers are a bit over-stylized which you can't really tell on the photo online or the box. It's evident as soon as it's plugged in. It's hard to read the time from say across the bedroom while getting dressed. But I have gotten used to it; so just a warning in case you really need, say large, bright plain numbers.
* The display doesn't have enough dim settings; it's either very bright, less-bright-but-still-bright or off. This is unfortunate; as sometimes I do wake up in the middle of the night wondering what time it is. However the less-bright-but-still-bright lights up the room a bit too much so I use the off setting. It's not a deal breaker but if you are really sensitive to the light; then you might want to consider another model - amazingly, it's difficult to find a model where there are decent dim settings.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the clock radio and would recommend it but also note those warnings about the brightness and somewhat difficult to read numbers.

I have had good results in the past with iLive products but this is a dud. I purchased 2 for my kids to use as "speakers" in their rooms for their iPod Touch. The good part is that they fit nice and securely in the product. The bad.... STATIC. The radio was mediocre quality, but to be fair, it is an am/fm radio, not a stereo. I could have lived with everything except the static on the iPod "channel". The only way to reduce the static is to crank the volume. My son tried to listen to it at night, and when the volume is low, it is horrible reception. Even when the iPod is off, and the unit is powered on and set to "iPod" there is static. They are on there way back. I was hopeful that it would work well enough, but alas, static killed the purchase. I would look elsewhere. Both of the units I got created the same static problem...

iSymphony V1BLUE Bluetooth Stereo System with Wireless Universal Dock for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

Received this as a gift. Seems to have many neat and user friendly gadgets. The synching of the ipod to the main unit via blue-tooth technology is neat, but frankly not needed as you still need power cords, etc for each unit.
What I discovered as I turned it on is the sound was TERRIBLE. On the packaging it states 200watts, however, the amp pushes 45 watts max. Oh and... the speakers are two 1/2 inch tweeters, 2 1 and 1/2 inch mids and a non-existant sub.
Having neat packaging, blue-tooth capabilities and a head unit that magically slides to the right so you can load a CD is great but when the sound quality is like any other made-in-china gadget, I must say pass. Don't make the mistake of buying this piece of garbage.

Returned back to Amazon without any problems. Love you guys! Second one showed up and lasted but a week. Power button on, getting power, but NOTHING. No sound at all. Radio didn't work. We just got the iLive ICP360 for our baby's room, so we can play music from an ipod in there. Overall i LOVE it, except for one rather annoying thing -- we had the hardest time getting it into 12-hour (am/pm) mode, rather than 24-hour (16:00, 22:15, etc) mode. In fact we still don't know what we did to finally get it right. The instructions make no mention of it at all. We even called the company's customer service, and the person we spoke to said it did not have a 12-hour mode, which is obviously incorrent. Very annoying.
That said, here are the things i like about it:
- cute! (for baby's room)
- colors are great
- acts as a night-light
- ipod plays through easily
- charges the ipod
- clock has brightness settings
- backup battery
- ac power
- audio line-in (for other sources)
- video out (not sure why i'd need this yet)
- 2 alarms

iLive ISP209B Portable Speaker System with Alarm Clock and Dock for iPod and iPhone (Black) Review

I received my iLive speaker system today. The audio quality is very good, and it does work with and charge my iPhone as advertised. HOWEVER, be aware that it does NOT have an AM/FM radio (as advertised in the Product Overview). You can only wake to an iPod/iPhone or a buzzer alarm. I hope that Amazon will clarify this in the Overview from now on. It was a disappointment to me since I often wake to radio... but as a good-quality speaker set and an iPhone charger it will be useful.
