(More customer reviews)On my quest to find a FM Transmitter, I bought a different itrip from Griffin, but it did not charge my ipod nano 4th Gen. So I called Grifin and they told me that in order to charge my ipod nano 4th Gen that it needs to be an itrip with Smart Scan technology. So i returned it and bought this one, and i'm very happy with it.
1. This unit charges our ipod nano 4th Gen no problem. The ring of light on the cigarette lighter plug lights up red when initially connected denoting power to FM transmitter, then amber once the ipod is connected (charging), and then it turns green when the ipod is fully charged.
2. I have a sealed radio in my car so therefore don't have an audio input unfortunatley (2005 Volvo s40 2.4i) and so FM Transmitters are a way of life for me. Your not going to get the perfect sound quality from these like you would with a direct input, so check to see if you got an aux input in your car first and then just buy a charger and a double male head phone wire. I have a Sirius Radio has an FM Transmitter so i'm use to dealing with changing frequencys every so often. I live in NJ and am in NYC and Long Island a lot. My car can tune to 87.9 which I use for the sirius radio almost everywhere, but sometimes while in NY I use 93.3 (pretty high on the frequency list, but for some reason it's clear).
3. Check to make sure your car can go into 87.9 range first, these channels are hardly ever used by radio stations, then switch this grifin itrip autoscan to international frequencies just press function, then press AND HOLD mode for roughly ten secons until a new menu appears. It'll give you US, EU, and JP choices above each of the three buttons on the itrip. I picked JP (for japan) which enables all the normal US frequencies plus the lower range, lower then my car can go, my car only goes to 87.3 or something. A funny thing is that when i tune my car and itrip to 87.9 i get static, but if i keep the itrip at 87.9 and tune my car to 87.8 it comes in perfectly clear. It doesn't do that in my wife's car, 87.9 is 87.9. Just set one of your car radio presets to that and your good to go!
4. I took someone else recomendation to adjust the ipods equalizer to "Acoustic" and that definetly sounds better.
5. Long story short, I like this product, I got it for a heck of a lot cheaper then any FM transmitter at the apple store. One downfall which people do mention is that it is a tad bit hard to read the display of the itrip when you got a glare, but you can set your own presets on the itrip. Autoscan function is stupid, but apparently this is the model that'll charge the ipod nano 4th gen. Scan the radio yourself for static/ or free channels and then tune the itrip to those.

The rapid seek function only finds stations that are already broadcasting loud and clear music.
Even when you can find a station manually that you can hear the ipod through (a very rare event), it is so quiet that you have to crank up the volume, making the static significantly louder than the music. It sounds terrible.
I don't see how anyone could give this 5 stars unless they are receiving a completely different product. The performance is so dismal that simple difference-of-opinion cannot explain it.

(More customer reviews)I will start this review by saying that it is a MUST that you use this unit on the 87.9 frequency. By default, the lowest the unit will go is 88.1, but I will describe how to toggle ON the lower frequencies so that you have access to 87.9 later in this review.
I use this unit with my iPhone 3g and have no issues with airplane mode or charging. Everything works as intended with no unexpected issues as far as compatibility with the iPhone 3G goes.
[Controls / Interface]
------------------------------
The controls and interface of this device are very clear and clean. There are 3 buttons on front of the cigarette lighter connector (Next Track, Previous Track, Pause/Play). The FM transmitter portion has three buttons on it also that adjust the frequency and give you menu options to toggle on and off. The display numbers are very clear to see, even during the day and the buttons are easy to press without any issues. The iPod/iPhone connector is pretty self explanatory and sturdy.
My only issue with the controls is the ones on the cigarette lighter jack. The buttons are pressable on the entire front surface of the connecter, which means that plugging the connector in causes you to change a track or pause/play if you connected the iPod/iPhone before powering up the unit. If you are like me and listen to music on the way to the car and want to easily transition, you may want to consider powering up first, then connecting the iPod/iPhone.
[Sound Quality / Signal Strength]

The signal strength of this device can only be described as lackluster when using any of the preset stations. This device is practically unusable on any frequency OTHER than 87.9 and by default, you can not set the device to anything lower than 88.1 (See instructions below on how to toggle on stations below 88.1).
However, when connected to 87.9, the signal is very clear and there is no obviously audible static or noise. Having said that, you will NOT get crystal clear sound out of this device, even at its best performance. High pitches tones sound slightly garbled and not as sharp as they should sound. The very low basses sound slightly muddy.
Overall the sound quality is clearer than normal radio stations, but not quite as clear as playing a CD in the deck.
[Charging / Other Functions]

The device doesn't have very many functions, but if there is something that does stand out, it is the charging.
Charging works very well and I find that my device charges extremely fast. The device has 3 light levels and the cigarette lighter connector will glow red when the battery is charging but low and green when the device is fully charged. It charges my iPhone 3G quickly, but does make it a little tiny bit hot if left on during a long trip (30+ minutes). I feel this is not too much of an issue though.
The preset station and smart scan functionality are lackluster and will often times find stations are are .2 higher than a station that has a very strong broadcast signal. This means that on these stations, you will hear the stronger signal and get nothing from the iPhone/iPod. The presets reset every time you do a scan and the results it gives back are typically very unreliable. Even when they do work, the signals are very static-y and will go out if you drive under a bridge or are ordering drive through at a fast good restaurant.
I will repeat once again:
ONLY USE THIS DEVICE ON 87.9 (Every other station is worthless)
It is the only station that truly does this device any justice and it is the only station that kept me from giving this product a 2 star and returning it.

[UPDATE: Please read the comments of this review for how to do this same thing with the new versions of this device. It works the same but the FUNCTION button has apparently moved.]
On the FM transmitter box, push the middle button (Function) and then press it a second time when it says "Mode." You will see a Griffin logo in the bottom center of that screen. Press and hold the middle button for approximately 10 seconds. You will know that you have toggled 87.9 ON when the Griffin logo moves from the bottom center to the top center. Let the device sit for a few seconds until it goes back to the main screen, then tune your radio and the transmitter to 87.9! Finally, enjoy the best signal you will get from this device!

I gave this device 4 stars because I found that it consistently works very very well on the 87.9 frequency. With this knowledge, I don't have to use the lackluster preset or smart scan functionalities. Using 87.9 gives great sound and a good signal.
The charges does its job very well and the controls on the cigarette lighter connector work well. The lights that glow according to the battery charge level are a nice touch and the device itself is stylish.

However, many of today's automobiles do not include a stereo with line-in, and cassette players are rarely found in cars today, which eliminates the ability to use a cassette adapter. What does this leave? A FM transmitter.
The original iTrip offered good performance, for a FM transmitter. That is the key, for a FM transmitter. FM transmitters will not sound like a CD, cassette, and in some cases it won't even sound as good as a strong FM radio station, in your area. However, many times, the iTrip does a satisfactory job. It works even better, if you're in a rural area, where there is a wide selection of empty FM frequencies.
Improvements over original iTrip
The new iTrip features an LCD, with the ability to change the FM frequency broadcasted to, directly on the iTrip. Previously, you had to navigate to the iTrip stations on your iPod, select a frequency, and press the pause button at just the right moment. That inconvenience is gone with the new iTrip with LCD. Simply twist to your desired station, and you're done.
More Broadcast Modes - You now have the ability to transmit in stereo, or mono sound. Stereo sound will be the highest quality, in good situations. However, if you find lots of static and interference, switch to the mono-sound mode. This allows a stronger signal, which may eliminate the static, unfortunately you lose the depth of stereo sound, but if you're listening to a podcast monaural sound is fine.
Better Battery Life - The new iTrip seems to drain significantly less battery life, than the original iTrip. Sure, it will still cut your iPod's battery life by several hours, but it is less dramatic than the original.
Overall, Griffin has improved upon perhaps their most popular iPod accessory, and they improved it in a big way. The ease to change the frequency you broadcast to is fantastic, and the improvements in performance and battery life are appreciated too. The Griffin iTrip with LCD FM Transmitter will not sound like CD audio, but it is a great way to listen to the thousands of songs on your iPod, in your car. Furthermore, the improvements to this newest model will make you find the experience of using a FM transmitter a little more bearable.

(More customer reviews)I just got this a in Nov 2008. I will tell you the three secrets to getting the best results. First, over the years I have purchased a HUGE number of these type devices and they all sucked. Only the iTrip (both the version with the iPod connector and the one with the standard headphone jack) have this secret that makes them the BEST. Secret #1) because these devices are limited in power, make sure the transmitter part is close to the radio. Secret #2) Unless you need stereo, use the LX mode. Secret #3 ... and this is the biggie ... switch to International Mode. Here's how.
Before you buy, go to your car and make sure you can set your radio to 87.9 frequency or lower. If you can, they you can use this UNused setting. No US radio station is allowed to transmit on this frequency. If you can set your car radio to this, then BUY either the product on this page or the other Griffin iTrip (with the standard headphone connector). I have both, and they BOTH use the SAME instructions.
First, plug in the iTrip. You Have two buttons - a larger +/- button and a smaller button that will either have "Select" or "Preset" written on it.
Hold down the smaller button for 10-15 sec. At first the display will flash "2" or some other number. Ignore that. Just keep waiting. Then the display will flash "DX" or "LX". Use the +/- to change to LX (non stereo mode). Press the smaller button and the selection is saved.
Now for International Mode (to get the stations below 88.1).
Hold down the smaller button for 10-15 sec. At first the display will flash "2" or some other number. Ignore that. Just keep waiting. Then the display will flash "DX" or "LX". IGNORE THIS ALSO, JUST KEEP HOLDING DOWN THE SMALL BUTTON. The display will change to "US" Use the +/- to change to INTL mode. Press the smaller button and the selection is saved.
With my iTrip set to LX and INTL I now set both the car and the iTrip to 87.9. I use the iTrip instructions to save this as a preset. I also set one of the buttons on my car radio to the same.
When I use my iPod, the sound is crystal clear, I do NOT need to adjust the car radio to super-high volume. It is perfect. However, iTrip no longer comes with instructions to set to INTL mode, nor could I find these instructions on their website or on the web. So ... print this, get this and you will have a five star experience!

Griffin iTrip Pocket FM Transmitter for iPod nano 2G Review

(More customer reviews)The industrial design of the iTrip Pocket is almost as impressive as the iPod Nano itself--which is one of the main reasons I selected it to begin with. It connects snugly to the USB connector on the base of the Nano, and its controls are very intuitive. It even briefly displays its FM station setting whenever you change its station, and upon power-up.
I recommend care when disconnecting it from the Nano. Since the connector is not centered, there is a tendency for the iTrip to pivot at an angle as it is being removed. If it is not disconnected in a straight line, I suspect that the lifetime of both connectors (iTrip, as well as the Nano mate) will be greatly reduced.
The sound quality of the iTrip is, at best, decent FM quality--which is what should be expected from an FM transmitter. The FCC limits the amount of broadcast power of these types of devices so that they do not interfere with radio broadcasts. This means that the FM power of all these transmitters is inherently weak. The iTrip will not give you CD quality sound. To optimize the sound quality, the selection of the radio station is critical. I found it to be absolutely essential that I find three unused FM stations in a row on my radio, and then set the iTrip to the middle station. I found that setting the iTrip to an unused station that is adjacent to a used station yielded very poor results. Note that, since the iTrip does not connect to the headphone/earbud jack of the Nano, it is not affected by the volume control of the Nano; it is only controlled by the volume control of your car's radio. I found that I have to set my radio's volume control significantly higher than normal when I use my iTrip; as mentioned before, even though it is only a few feet from the radio, the iTrip is still a very weak transmitter. As with any FM radio broadcast, there can be intermittent radio noise while driving, and noticeable hiss, particularly when the radio's volume is turned up high which (as mentioned earlier) is necessary when using the iTrip.
The position of the iTrip in your car is significant. One of my cars has the antenna in the rear. In this car, I find that reception is improved if I place the iTrip in the back seat--closer to the antenna.
Note that this product does not charge your Nano, in fact it uses your Nano's battery to operate. I have noticed a significant reduction of the Nano's battery life while using the iTrip. With the iTrip, I can only get about 6-8 hours on a charge; normally, a charge lasts at least 10-12 hours, I think.
Overall, I think this is a very good product. But if you are looking for better sound and your car has a cassette deck, I recommend using a cassette converter (traditionally used to connect a portable CD player through a cassette deck). If you want the best possible sound, the only way to go is to directly connect your Nano to your car's stereo system which, depending on the type of stereo you have, may not be straightforward.

Be it ease of use, excessive static or simply poor construction they all suffered from deficiencies that rendered them unusable. With the AirPlay Boost however I have been very satisfied with its performance. The default frequency (87.9 MHz) was fine for my area (Tampa, a big but sprawling metropolitan area). My primary use will be in my car and for that scenario it worked well. There was static discernible but I would go so far as to say that it was less than most radio stations. The telescoping antenna was a little flimsier than expected but not so much so that I am concerned about its durability. I am glad it is telescoping as my iPod would not fit in its protective case otherwise. The inclusion of a pass through charging connector at the bottom of the transmitter is a nice feature. The case design of the transmitter blends well with the case of the iPod Nano 2G. I would recommend this product to others.

Customer support will not tell you how to change the device into international BUT I WILL. Hold down the + and - button for about 20 seconds. 'US" will flash in the upper left corner. Now press the + button until you see 'intl'. Now the device will unlock ALL frequencies 87.7 - 107.9. Use 87.9 or 87.7 for best reception. Also try changing from LX to DX (stereo to mono) because DX (mono) seems to give off a stronger signal without compromising sound. your welcome.

(More customer reviews)I have used many different FM transmitters in my iPod history, and this one is no different than the others: if you can't find a weak FM station in your area, it's not going to work.
I originally and accidentally purchased the iPod-only version of the iTrip Auto (which oddly seemed to work with the iPhone, but I didn't want to take a chance so I got the proper version). Both of the devices worked fine on the FM transmitter functionality side of things. But all the FM transmitters I have used have worked fine (my previous model was a Kensington Pico for the iPod).
The sound quality to me is no different than the Pico, and as good as any other Griffin FM transmitter I have used. In general the sound quality of any FM transmitter just isn't going to sound as good as a wired connection, so I am basing my opinion relative to the technology. I think it sounds great, with the limitations of the technology in mind.
Cool iPhone features: when a call comes in, the music fades out so you can answer the phone and resumes when you're done (just as it does when using it without the iTrip). You can use the iPhone's features to do anything else you normally would, the iTrip does not hamper any functionality.
The cord is plenty long enough to place the transmitter or the iPhone just about anywhere you want.
I didn't test the Smart Scan feature as I already know which station I use in my area. Manually tuned it to the frequency and worked great.
I am sure the other negative reviews are valid from the experience they had with the product, but unless they were able to get another FM transmitter working for them in their area, my guess is that it's just the nature of the technology, and your experience will vary depending on how many FM stations are broadcasting in your area and how strong the signal is from those radio stations. The FCC puts limits on the signal strength these personal FM transmitters, so at least to some degree the manufacturer is limited to those restrictions.
For me, this was the perfect car audio/charging solution. In the past I opted for the super-mini FM transmitters that were powered by the iPod battery, but with needing a car charger for the iPhone anyways and realizing over the years that I really never used the FM transmitter outside the car, this all-in-one solution fit my needs perfectly.
I bought elsewhere, getting a much better price on this which added to my satisfaction with the iTrip.

Griffin iTrip LCD FM Transmitter for iPod nano 1G (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've tried a few FM transmitters for my various iPods, from Griffin and other manufacturers, and this one sounds as good as any I've used, which is to say not all that terrific - it's OK for non-critical listening in the car, but if you want consistent, crystal-clear, high quality sound without crackling and hiss you'll have to go for some sort of direct-wired approach.
Setting aside the limits of the technology itself, I'd give Griffin's approach four stars - this is a nice little gadget, and very easy to use. It's beautifully designed; the sled arrangement allows it to "bond" with the Nano very nicely - it looks like one integrated unit (though I wish Griffin had offered it in white as well as black). The iTrip hijacks the Nano's screen, which makes for easy tuning and adjustment of preferences (stereo/mono, etc). I haven't noticed a problem yet with the "micro-suction" pad that holds the Nano to the transmitter, but keeping the pad clean is probably a necessity.
Speaking of which, the iTrip comes with a nice little grey cloth pouch that holds the Nano and transmitter snugly - the inside of the pouch is soft, but it also sheds a lot of very fine dust onto the unit for a few days, which probably doesn't help the pad's sticking power.
One caveat - you can't use this transmitter with a Nano case (which may explain why Griffin included a pouch). I've got the clear plastic "Invisibleshield" on my Nano, so it's not a problem for me.
It strikes me as a little overpriced, but it's certainly the best available solution for people who want to listen to their Nano in the car but can't hardwire a connection.

So, I'm reviewing it again the lazy way. I hope you find it informative. I was originally considering the Monster or the Belkin brand prior to this purchase. Now, I'm glad I went with this purchase instead.
Surprises -- particularly good ones -- are very rare in FM transmitters these days, as the Federal Communications Commission's crackdown on overpowered radio broadcasting devices has compelled many companies to broadcast just within the U.S. government's legal limitations. Over the past year, we've become familiar enough with those limitations that it seems obvious when a device is unhappily struggling to match them or blowing right past the marks, hoping not to get caught. Though we might be wrong, XtremeMac's combination FM transmitter and car charger InCharge FM ($70) seems to be in the latter category: two sample units we tested outperformed recent FCC compliant transmitters we've tested by a fair margin.
Like the earlier InCharge Auto, InCharge FM appears to have been designed to physically match the iPhone, using chrome and black plastic in an attractive, minimalist combination for each of its key parts. First, there's a car charging bulb with a subtle blue light to indicate that it's receiving power, and second, there's a cabled FM transmitter that connects to an iPod with a Dock Connector plug at one end, and a case-compatible USB plug for charging at the other. InCharge FM doesn't run off of the iPod's battery, and so depends on the cabled transmitter to be connected to the charging bulb, or a USB-enabled computer or wall charger, for power.
This latter point deserves a little extra attention. Virtually every one of the "in-car" FM transmitters we've tested over the past few years is "only in-car," with the manufacturer assuming--probably correctly--that you're only interested in hearing your iPod's audio through a radio when you're driving. Because you can pull the car charger off and connect InCharge FM to any powered USB port or wall charger, this one can be used indoors too, which will be a bonus for people who want to charge and hear their iPods through home radios without using a dock or wires. Our one and only issue with XtremeMac's connectors was a slightly loose right lock on our second review unit's Dock Connector, which didn't interfere with the unit's performance.
XtremeMac's transmitter looks like a pill-shaped miniature iPhone, with buttons on its face and sides, plus a blue LED screen where the iPhone's touchscreen would be. A play/pause/next track button for iPod touch and a stereo/mono toggle switch are accessible on one side of the transmitter, while the other side has two preset buttons, and the face has manual tuning buttons for the transmitter. The screen's only for numbers, and keeps at least the bright blue decimal dot on display whenever power's running through the transmitter, as well as matching digits whenever an iPod or iPhone is connected. The currently shipping version of InCharge FM is only iPod-compatible, bringing up the iPhone's nag screen, but a nagless version is planned for near future release as well. Nag aside, both of the review units we tested worked extremely well with the iPhone.
In fact, the units worked extremely well with anything we connected. XtremeMac says that the InCharge FMs use a licensed FM transmission technology called Quintic PureFM that promises "a consistently clean signal and excellent dynamic range," and though the units we tested weren't immune to the subtle static levels that persist in all FM transmitters, they did in fact sound great--especially when tuned to everclear station 87.9FM. We preferred the dynamic sound of the InCharge FM to what we heard from Belkin's TuneCast Auto, as well as Griffin's most recent iTrip Auto--on good or bad stations, XtremeMac's transmitter sounded clearer.
To quantify this a bit more, on an empty FM station such as 87.9FM, InCharge FM sounded almost completely clear, which wasn't a shock, but it also had the ability to basically flood out an existing station that was weak to moderate on the dial, and didn't suffer as much from the transmitter's location in our test vehicle as the others. We were also able to get a clear signal from five feet away from the antenna indoors. While these are positive performance characteristics that any end user would appreciate, they're also hints that the transmitter is like a track runner on steroids, capable of outperforming its rivals but also leaving us wondering how long it would remain in competition.
Overall, we can't help but be impressed by the overall performance and value the current version of InCharge FM brings to the table. Bucking past XtremeMac pricing trends, it sells for $10 less than its key competitors, but still manages to outperform them on sound, and look great in the process. Its ability to work indoors, using a USB charger or computer for power, also adds value for some users. From a features standpoint, all it's conspicuously missing is Belkin's ClearScan or Griffin's SmartScan auto-tuning feature, and then, its inclusion of near-universally-empty 87.9FM on the dial all but eliminates the need for tuning.

(More customer reviews)If you have a cassette deck in your car, you don't need the iTrip, just get one of those cassette adapters and you are all set. But if you don't have a cassette deck in your car, the iTrip does what it's supposed to do fairly well. In the majority of cases, it works fine. Although you should be aware that this technology is not perfect. Depending on your location, you may occaisionally experience some static from a radio station that is near where you have the iTrip set to.
Also, the quality is limited to FM radio quality. It is not as good as what the iPod is capable of and certainly not CD quality. That said, the quality from the iTrip is quite listenable for the price when there is no static. In my area (which is a major metropolitan area), no matter what I do, I get some occaisional static depending on the time of day.
If your car stereo has a line input, that would the the ideal recommendation. Some radios nowadays even have a jack right on the front of the radio. If yours doesn't, perhaps it has line input jacks in the back of the unit and an installer can wire this up for you so you can access it and plug the iPod in to it.
Another better option than the iTrip is to have a car stereo shop install a wired FM modulator for you. The FM modulator is wired under your dash between your antenna and the radio and includes a jack for the iPod. This works virtually flawlessly, with no static and a much more powerful signal into the radio.
In all, I would recommend the iTrip for use in a rental car or a friend's car or if you will only use the iPod occaisionally in your car. If you drive a lot and use the iPod exclusively, it would definitely be worth it to invest in a wired option instead.

The iPod has helped revolutionize the way people store and listen to music, but it's not particularly car-friendly. Unless your car stereo includes a cassette deck (increasingly rare) or an auxiliary input (more common among newer stereos) combined with the appropriate adapter, you simply haven't had the means to play your extensive iPod library through your car speakers. Several companies, however, have sought to fill this void by releasing a product called an FM transmitter, which broadcasts iPod tunes through FM airwaves. Griffin Technology is among the category leaders with its iTrip, a discreet little device that fits unobtrusively on top of the iPod model. The iTrip isn't confined to car stereos--it plays on almost any FM radio--but because most home stereos and boomboxes have auxiliary inputs, it's most popular as a car accessory.
Design and Setup The iPod is loaded with impressive features, but it's also an Apple product, which means that looks matter. A lot. And Griffin clearly recognizes this, because the company has released several iTrips designed to match specific iPod models, and each is among the sleekest FM transmitters on the market. Plus, the device measures less than an inch tall and exactly as wide as the iPod it sits on, so it takes up almost no extra space--an important feature to people who value the iPod's portability.

The iTrip is designed to broadcast to any empty FM frequency on your dial--depending on where you receive the best reception--but it's only configured to play at 87.9 MHz right out of the box. That means a little setup is required using the included CD-ROM and iTunes. Fortunately, the installation is painless and takes only a few minutes. The installer adds a playlist to your iPod (through iTunes) called iTrip Stations, which consists of a series of short audio files that correspond with all available FM frequencies.

Features and Performance The iTrip performs best when tuned to an FM frequency that plays nothing but static, with no audible words or music. Finding a good frequency is fairly easy, but it requires your full attention, so it's best to do so while parked. We tested the iTrip on three separate frequencies in a mid-size market with varying success. The sound was generally good in two of the frequencies, less so in the third. This remained true whether the iPod sat next to the radio, in the backseat, or under a stack of newspapers. While driving through bad FM reception areas, the iTrip received a bit of static, but it usually passed in a couple of seconds.

The iTrip is designed more for convenience than elite audio performance, so listeners shouldn't expect CD-quality sound. When tuned to a clear frequency, it's about on par with the average FM station. If the volume is turned high, users might notice a slight hiss through the speakers, but engine hum and road noise will generally cover that up. However, listeners who value top-quality sound--especially people with expensive speaker systems that pick up every minor flaw--might instead want to add an auxiliary input to their car stereos to get the most from their iPods.

The main drawbacks to the iTrip are fairly minor, but will bother some users. First, the iTrip Stations playlist is stored as part of your overall music library, meaning the individual audio files can emerge during shuffle play--and the sound isn't pleasant. Listeners can remedy this by creating a new playlist with their entire music libraries minus the iTrip Stations files. Second, the iTrip draws its power from the iPod battery. This is both a plus and a minus, because it means you don't need to keep buying new AAA batteries every week, but you also won't receive as much power from each iPod charge. If this bothers you, consider purchasing an auto charger, which powers your iPod or iPod mini through the cigarette lighter adapter while you drive. Third, the iTrip isn't great for long road trips through crowded regions, because the available FM frequencies might change every 40 or so miles (or less), making it necessary to frequently re-tune the iTrip. On the flip side, it's great for long drives through the country.

Ultimately, the iTrip is a good value. The convenience will please iPod fans who have been clamoring for a way to play their music in the car. Audiophiles might want to look elsewhere, but most other listeners should be satisfied. --Rivers Janssen

(More customer reviews)Th Jam Cast model MP-JAM 3-in1 works very well with my ipod shuffle, itouch and iPhone 3GS. The holder expands to hold each device nice and tight. Keeping it tilted as much as possible minimizes the chance of my iPhone dropping on the floor if I hit a bump too hard. The FM signal is stronger than others I have tried. I was able to use this with my iPhone while keeping it in an Otterbox Defender after I filed off the square corners from the dock mount. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the need to modify the dock mount. It was only a small customization, well worth the 3 minutes to make it fit. The only other other option was to buy a $29 dock cable extension. Not necessary if you own a nail file.

I am familiar with the limitations of FM transmitters and have purchased various models over the years including Griffin iTrip predescessors and have had decent success (particular units like Griffin that allow you to set the FM station to below 88.1 using Europe settings).
This unit is seriously flawed. First of all, even though it indicates that it is iPhone (3G/3GS) compatible, the iPhone displays an error message that the iTrip is not compatible with the iPhone. Apparently this is due to lack of certification from Apple.
Ignoring this problem, I was unable to get the FM transmitter to work on a clear station. The unit charges the iPhone fine. I tried several station, including 87.9, several cars, and several devices (iTouch, old iPod), etc. I contacted Griffin and they sent me a replacement unit.
The replacement unit faired a little better. I was able to get it to work in one car (Toyota) after removing/inserting the power plug multiple times but not in other cars (BMW, Acura). I noticed with the BMW I was finally able to get the transmitter to work with much noise, but only in the upper FM dial, e.g., 104.5 FM.
The support group at Griffin was very polite and responsive but told me that they don't make the transmitters as powerful as their older models due to FCC limitations in the last four years. They offered to send me yet another unit but I did not see the point. Unfortunately for me, since I tried to deal with Griffin directly, I exceeded the Amazon 30 day return window (this was a gift that I gave to someone else).
There is also an iPhone application for this iTrip but it has little value.
While the unit appears to be nice for iPhone (including the ability to advance through a playlist from the iTrip without turning on the iPhone), it does not work and should be avoided.
UPDATE. Griffin sent me a 3rd unit. I was unable to get any reception with it. In the meanwhile, I purchased an FM transmitter/charger from Grantwood Technology and highly recommend it. Reception is great with no static and unit costs less than the iTrip
