Planet Audio P265IU AM/FM/CD/MP3/Bluetooth Compatible Receiver with Full iPod Control Compatibility with Front USB Port and Full Detachable Face Plate Review

Planet Audio P265IU AM/FM/CD/MP3/Bluetooth Compatible Receiver with Full iPod Control Compatibility with Front USB Port and Full Detachable Face Plate

The "normal" functions of the radio including AM/FM and the CD player work just fine. However, I purchased this car audio receiver specifically for its full IPod compatibility, along with blue tooth. In order to use it with my IPod Touch the unit required a special Ipc40 integration cable, which I also purchased and installed. Initially, when I only had about 4-7 gigabytes of music on the IPod, the unit worked great and provided control of my IPod directly from the radio display. Now that I've got about 21 gigabytes of music on the IPod, the radio is unable to complete the "searching" function and just hangs in that mode. As a result of that failure, I am extremely disappointed with the unit.

Clarion CZ209 CD/MP3/WMA Receiver with iPod Control and USB Port Review

Clarion CZ209 CD/MP3/WMA Receiver with iPod Control and USB Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This stereo has made a wonderful replacment/upgrade to the factory CD player in my 2003 Subaru Outback wagon. It was very easy to install, thanks to the friendly staff at Crutchfield who can provide you with a wiring harness.
The standard AM/FM radio isa available, but I honestly never use it these days. The ability to play MP3 CDs is excellent, and I keep one in the stereo with some of our favorites, for days we forget to bring the thumb drive.
The AUX port is a great feature too, for those who have non-iPod MP3 players. iPods can be hooked up directly thru the USB.
It's the USB that makes this unit awesome. The port is on the back of the stereo in the form of a ~18" permanently attached USB cable, with a Type A Female connection on the end (perfect for pluggin in things like Thumb Drives).
We routed our USB cable to a compartment below the stereo that has a flip open door. Simply open the door, puul out the cable, lug in the thumb drive, stuff it back in the compartment, close the door and enjoy.
This stereo will take a few seconds (5-10) to read your MP3 CD / USB drive. Once it does, you are set to go. If you unplug the USB drive, and don't plug any different USB drives in, the next time you plug in that thumb drive, it will pick up playpack right were it left off. Nice feature.
We couldn't play music on our Sansa MP3 Player from the USB connection, but it may be something we are doing wrong. At any rate, thumb drives are cheap and smaller, and multi-purpose.
The stereo will play WMA, MP3, WAV, and possibly others? Those are the three formats I've tossed at it so far.
The display is okay. Easy read, but because it has to scroll the titles and other information across, it feels like you have to keep glancing down to read it as you drive.
Asides from an amazing price and all of the features I needed, this stereo appealed over the slightly more expenisive models in one major area: There are buttons on the head unit to navigate and otherwise manipulate the stereo. Sure it comes with a remote, and sure you lose potential screen space when you start cramming on buttons... BUT, as the person driving the car and using the stereo, you'll want the ability to quickly and easily execute each operation. The idea of a joystick style master knob appeals to my inner-geek, but it'd be too frustrating to operate.
Speaking of operating, this stereo is a breeze. I've yet to look in the manual.
So far I have only one gripe. Last night while driving home, the wife was trying to find a song. The process was: skip to next track. See the 2 second display of the track number, then see the title begin to scroll. About that time you're in about 3 - 5 seconds and are starting to realize what the song is, and that it's not the one you want. It'd be nice to be able to "browse" the songs and then select one for playing, instead of surfing through them. Maybe if I read the manual I'll find that feature?
All-in-all, this is an amazing unit. I wish I had bought into one of these a couple years ago (although the prices are great now).

The Clarion CZ209 is a great way to get the basics but still leave room to grow. Enjoy playback of CDs, CD-R/RWs, MP3/WMA files, and AM/FM radio. Connect your iPod or a USB device for more digital audio options. If you need more, add a Clarion Bluetooth interface for hands-free calling, an OEM steering wheel remote, or more power using the two RCA preamp outputs.

Detachable Faceplate The CZ209 features a detachable faceplate with white 8-character display. Blue key illumination makes control in the dark a snap.
CDs and More Play back your favorite CDs and CD-R/RWs, or burn your MP3/WMA files to a data CD and enjoy hours of music, complete with ID3-TAG display for displaying track info like artist or song names. You can also play the files back from an inserted USB thumb drive.
Direct iPod control The USB input on the rear of the CX609 lets you connect your iPod directly without an expensive adapter. Just use your stock iPod cable, and you'll enjoy your favorite iPod tunes, along with complete control and battery charging of your iPod. The unit also supports title display for the tracks playing on your iPod.
Front Panel Auxiliary Input Connect MP3 players or other external audio devices in a snap with the 3.5mm front auxiliary input.
Easily Expand The CZ209 gives you a 50W x 4 built-in amplifier to begin with, along with two RCA preamp outputs to grow your system.
It's also ready for Clarion's BLT370 Bluetooth interface or OEM steering wheel remote.
Magna Bass EX This circuit boosts bass at an ultra-low frequency of About 50Hz, creating a rich, deep, defined bass rather than the muddy, booming bass of a standard loudness control. What's more, boost levels are dependent on the system volume, resulting in balanced system response and dynamic bass reproduction.

I purchased this unit for the navigation and MP3 functionality. Unfortunately use can't use both at the same time. You can use the radio with the navigation, but then you are limited to the weak reception of the radio on non-urban areas or traveling across longer distances. You cannot use the CD player with the navigation system either. The MP3 player randomization function is predictable and constant. The play will always start with the first file on the SD card and the next song is picked randomly. However, each time you get into the car the same random songs are played in the same random order. This unit is a nice unit if you only want it to do one thing at a time, however, do not ask the unit to do more than one thing at a time. When I get a chance I will swap this unit out for a better one and sell it on e-bay.

Average Reviews:

I'm quite happy with the unit after a couple days. Surprised at how well it integrates with my iPhone (3GS) for music. It has two modes for using with iPhone, the default is it blanks the IPOD on the phone and you get full IPOD control on the deck (browse by artist-album-song). If you prefer you can set to 'passenger' mode which turns on the ability to control songs from the iPhone rather than the deck. Pandora works. You can navigate and do whatever you want on the phone while playing music through the deck; something two different 'geeks' at BB told me it couldn't do. Charges iPhone good. Cons - Silly triple beep I can't figure out how to turn off when ignition turns off, supposed to remind you to remove the faceplate - sheesh. No simple bass/treble adjustment for the wife, have to adj EQ from what I can tell.

SONY MEX-5DI CD Receiver for Car Stereo Review

SONY MEX-5DI CD Receiver for Car Stereo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's start by getting the obvious out of the way. This cd player is gorgeous. From the chrome face and lcd screen, to the amount of features the Mex-5di offers, it's quite an amazing head unit. Cd/mp3 playback quality is great, but keep in mind that the Mex-5di has no built-in amplification, so for good sound quality you'll also need good aftermarket amplifiers.

The motorized cd tray is a nice touch, and coupled with Sony's G-protection, you'll never hear another distracting "chirp" of the cd skipping when you drive through a pothole.

Also nice is the ability to personalize your cd player with pictures and short movie clips. Sizing the movie clips for playback takes some work however, as the image cannot be over 64x64 bytes and cannot be more than 10 frames long. The Mex-5di is more flexible with still pictures, and will automatically size pictures to fit the display.

Most important to keep in mind is the fact that the short movie clips and slideshows will play back WHILE DRIVING, and it is completely legal for it to do so.

I do however have one complaint about this cd player, and that is the lack of a detachable face. For one, anyone who sees you drive by will most likely see your bright expensive cd player shining back at them. Sony did come up with an alternative method to deter theft, but without giving away what it is... let's just say it won't work, and without an alarm system on your car you'll spend a lot of time worrying about the safety of your cd player.

Also, I live in New England and in the winter the temperature in the car will often times drop below freezing. Without a detachable faceplate, the liquid crystal display is subject to the elements and it will freeze. This won't be a problem unless you turn the unit on while the temperature in the car is below freezing. When the Mex-5di's display turns on while the crystals are frozen, the rapid heating will cause the crystals to expand and crack, ruining the display. So remember to keep the unit off for a good 10 minutes while the car is warming up.
All in all, the Mex-5di is a top-notch cd player. If Sony came out with this same model tomorrow with a detach face, I would sell my Mex-5di and buy the new model. But as of right now, this cd player is hands-down the best on the market.

I was wary to purchase a stereo at this price point and an unfamilar brand at that. I have to say I'm generally impressed. For under sixty dollars you get a stereo that has an aux input, USB input AND a SD card input. You don't find that on any brand names at this price point. I like the idea of putting an 8GB sd card or flash drive and hitting random (which it does for all sources)and not having to mess with much else. The display, which is quite busy, is attractive and fully animated with a pulsing three color equalizer and rotating CD icon when playing discs. The only complaints I have is that its an all button deck. If you are used to a volume knob or jog dial, this unit will take some getting used to. Other than that, I find the scrolling text for the ID3 info annoying, but that's a personal preference. Tuner works fine. Sound is good all around. I've read conflicting statements about the max wattage being from 100 to 400 watts, but the sound is clear at peak volumes in my truck and I don't really listen to music that loud anyway. It did come with a full function remote and hardshell padded carrying case for the faceplate, which some name brands don't even provide anymore. Overall, the build quality is on par with other brands and I think its a great value worth considering.

I bought the Dual DVDN9131 at Wal-mart on 1-23-10. Today is 3-6-10 and I just shipped it back to Dual to be fixed or replaced. The unit worked fine when I first installed it, but now when I try to use the blue tooth to make phone calls people cannot understand what I am saying. My voice is Garbled like I am talking under water or something. I contacted Dual customer support and they told me to ship it back for repair or replace. I don't know what to expect from here, I have never owned any Dual products before. This radio seems to be a nice unit, I just hope they take care of the problem in a timley manner.

We have had this radio before and think it is a great product. BUT, Jenson needs a lot of help in the written installation instructions area. For a seasoned technician, probably no problem. BUT, for the average person attempting the installation themselves, WOW...........I had to write for technical help three different times just to get the wiring done. AND, the directions were so small I was just barely able to read the wiring diagrams even with a large magnifying glass.
After getting through the installation the radio is working great, we love it.

Jensen HD5112 HD Radio/CD/MP3/WMA/USB/SD Card/iPod Receiver with Detachable Faceplate Review

Jensen HD5112 HD Radio/CD/MP3/WMA/USB/SD Card/iPod Receiver with Detachable Faceplate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The radio installed easily (they all do) but after enjoying the HD radio for a day, I inserted a USB flash drive to listen to my MP3s and got a "USB ERR". So I got an SD card and tried the same thing (the SD capabilities were the reason I bought it) and got an "SD ERR". So the next day I burned a CD of MP3s to get me by until I returned the radio for a refund, and of course I got a "CD ERR" when I inserted the CD.
I called tech support (I didnt realize Jensen and Audiovox were the same company...wish I had) and he sounded surprised, then said to get a refund. In the little bit of research I did I found some good reviews, but after my troubles I did some more and found I wasn't the only one whose radio worked, but nothing else.
I know Jensen is low-end stuff but I was hoping for at least a year or 2 of working features. Not even a day.
Pros: The radio sounded fine. It looks nice, not that that is worth anything.
Cons: Aside from the fact that most of the radio didn't even function, the remote is weak and has the bubble buttons, not solid switches. The sticker that says "warranty void if removed" automatically gets scraped right off when removing the mount for installation, and more so when the radio is slid into the mount for the first time (saw other complaints of this online). Faceplate is not always easy to replace when removed, which you have to do when using SD slot. Trim ring kept falling to the floor. And on and on...
What's sad is that SD capabilities only seem to be available in low-end product like Jensen/Audiovox, VR/Roadmaster, etc. At least according to the local big box stores.
Refunded today... looking for something else.

The HD5112 starts with high-definition AM/FM reception and adds plenty more, including playback of CD, CD-R/RW, CD-DA, and MP3/WMA CDs. Add a front-panel USB port, SD card, iPod support, and an auxiliary input, and you have a great system with cutting-edge features at an affordable price.

Built-in HD Radio Tuner HD radio technology allows CD-quality digital broadcasting of your local AM and FM radio stations. HD radio broadcasts can include multiple channels on the same frequency, which is called multicasting. With multicasting, you can receive up to three additional multicast channels: HD2, HD3, HD4. With your HD5112 radio, you will receive HD radio digital broadcasts automatically when tuned to a station that offers HD radio technology. Learn more about HD radio in our handy guide on the topic.

Satellite Radio Ready With a subscription to XM or Sirius satellite radio, you'll enjoy access to a ton of music, news, talk shows, sports, and traffic information with CD-quality sound throughout the United States.

Of course, there's standard radio as well. Pull up one of your favorites instantly with six FM and six AM presets.

Supports MP3/WMA Files via CD-R/RW, SD card, or USB The HD5112 can play MP3/WMA directly from files contained on a CD-R/RW, SD card, or USB device using the buttons on the receiver. Burn a disc or just quickly drag some files to a USB jump drive or SD card, and head out the door with your latest faves.

Installing a USB device is simple--insert your USB thumb drive into the USB slot on the front of the radio, and the unit will automatically search for MP3 and WMA files on the device and begin playback. Same goes for insertion of an SD card under the front panel.

Made for iPod This unit is equipped with an iPod-ready function that will allow you to control your iPod (if compatible) using the front panel control buttons. Just hook up your iPod with the included jLink iPod cable and take your iTunes library on the road. The following iPod versions are supported:

JVC KW-AVX800 7-inch In-dash Multimedia System Review

JVC KW-AVX800 7-inch In-dash Multimedia System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit specifically because I wanted certain functions. After extensive research, I found that this device said in the product specs that it would do everything I wanted. While technically true, it performed so poorly in some areas that I in the end was disappointed. I have now tried several units trying to get these functions, including this unit. Ultimately, I returned this unit, though because it was not good enough at all of the things I wanted it to do. If you do not care about some of the things I do (or you care about other things - for example, for me DVD playback was irrelevant, so I did not even try this out), the unit might be fine for you.
Keep in mind, in order to do a lot of these things, you need to buy a separate breakout box or adapter that is not included in the price. Here is a list of what I wanted it to do & how it did:
1.Bluetooth integration. Fantastic. Best voice dial integration on any product I tried. There is a dedicated hard button to turn on voice dial that can be accessed no matter what mode the unit is in. Call quality was also good. It also accessed and played in a very good quality my music on my bluetooth smartphone. Truly, best in breed, and if all you care about is bluetooth integration, then this unit is for you.
2.Ipod integration. Not so good. Although the unit is touch screen, instead of listing items on the screen and letting you touch them to select, it instead only goes through one item in a menu tree at a time & then you have to hit an "enter" button that is not marked as enter. It looks like they took a non-touch screen interface & used it in this unit instead of writing one to take advantage of the touch screen capabilities. Worse, it sometimes looses time scyc with my latest generation ipod (I tried both a new 8 gb nano and a new 80 gb classic & had the same problems). Basically, the time would come up with "00:00" quite often, and then stay there. Because the unit continually thinks you are at the beginning of a track, it will not let you rewind. This can be a problem with books on tape or podcasts. This happened at least a few times per week. My installer said JVC was aware of this problem.
3.XM integration. OK but not great. It suffers from the same annoying lack full touch screen integration that exists for ipod, albeit to a much lesser extent. You can, for example, select a preset by touching the channel. However, my xm presets would often disappear from the preset list. What I mean is that the slot for the preset would be there, but the channel name would be missing. This happened almost daily. My installer said JVC was aware of this problem.
4.Control of unit from factory redundant controls on steering wheel. Poor. I wanted to be able to control basic functions on the unit from the factory steering wheel controls so I would not have to take my eyes off the road. Sometimes it worked, sometimes (often) it did not. Volume down refused to work most of the time.
In the end, item 1 was great, item 2 was below average, item 3 was OK, and item 4 was poor. On balance, not good enough for me to keep.

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording Review

Griffin Technology RadioShark AM / FM Desktop Radio with Time-Shift Recording
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already have a couple software programs that will automatically record and save radio programming but when the Radio Shark was announced, I couldn't resist. Mac elegance, simplicity and functionality. Or so I thought. The product is solid, well made and the software is easy to use. Unfortunately, the reception is unacceptably poor in my suburban, residential area. Every radio I own from clock radios, a couple Tivoli Pal's, a built in-whole house system, mini-systems and so on receive programming easily. The Radio Shark's reception is inferior to even the lowliest of portables. I've tried everything I can think of. Coiling the USB cable, moving it to every place within reach, using a high dollar shielded usb extension cable which also allowed me to move the Shark further from the computer), using the Radio Shark's headphone input with a pair of ear buds and a minijack to rca cable (as Griffin's website suggests). Nothing seems to help. I have two other radios within 18 inches of computers and they were pretty easy to set up and receive clear, static free programming. The Radio Shark has been a huge disappointment. I should have learned my lesson after purchasing the Power Mate from this company. The Power mate (ditto for the Radio Shark) is very high quality piece of hardware from a fit and finish standpoint but the software was glitchy with a pc. Maybe it would have been better with a mac. But I digress. Perhaps if you live far from all urban and suburban interference or live on a hill with better line of site to the towers you want to receive from, the Radio Shark might be fine. For the rest of us, the Radio Shark is likely to disappoint. If you want to time shift radio programming, I can recommend two excellent pieces of software. High Criteria's Total Recorder Pro (for the pc) and Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack Pro for the Mac. I don't work for or profit from either comany. I use both on a daily basis. Both are rock solid. All you need to do is connect a radio to your pc or mac and you're set.

Boss 765DBI In-Dash Solid State MP3 Receiver with Internal iPod Docking Station Review

Boss 765DBI In-Dash Solid State MP3 Receiver with Internal iPod Docking Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As described on the website, this receiver looked perfect for my needs: built in bluetooth compatible with my iPhone, and a hidden iPod connection, which means no ugly wires dangling from the front of my dashboard to hook up my tunes. iPod is controllable from the front panel -- also what I wanted. Great that it had a radio, but I like to listen to the iPod and make/receive phone calls; no need for a CD player (which this unit does not have).
Unfortunately, the iPod interface is really pretty awful. I have hundreds of albums on my iPod, and there is no way to search through them other than alphabetically, and that requires turning the knob on the front of the unit. No acceleration to get you there faster. Can't search by composer, (although you can search by playlist, genre, artist, album or song) which would have been nice as I am a classical music fan. The WORST feature, however, is that the unit drops the first second of every track as it starts playing, which is totally unacceptable. I've packaged it back up and am returning it.
Oh, and the display is unbelievably coarse-- looks like maybe 100 pixels on the whole thing; the result is blocky letters reminiscent of early 80's electronics. Not worthy of the $150 pricetag.

Pioneer DEH-P480MP - Radio / CD / MP3 player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 50 Watts x 4 Review

Pioneer DEH-P480MP - Radio / CD / MP3 player - Full-DIN - in-dash - 50 Watts x 4

The new line of pioneer not only looks good, they are great in every aspect. This cd player will improve your car sound more than you think. I set it in my honda and it matches the car's interior lights color. I had pioneer speakers (the blue models) and a 500 watt amp. It sounded good, but when I changed my cd player, it improved in a unbelievable way. It was surely louder!! And the sound was so crisp, ohh I love it. Plus I added the module cable for ipods, I have more fun in my car than at home.

Alpine iDA-X200 In-Dash Radio/MP3 Player (Black) Review

Alpine iDA-X200 In-Dash Radio/MP3 Player (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was surprised there was so little info on the web about the Alpine iDA-x200. It's one of the only car stereos that can control your Creative Zen and other mtp (media transfer protocol) mp3 players like an iPod. When you plug your zen into the usb port, it takes about a minute of searching before it will play music. You can search by playlist, artist, album and others. You can skip to the next song but you can't speed search through a song (this limitation is only with mtp players). Also, when you turn off the car and come back, it will return to the beginning of the track you were listening to (only with mtp players). This means, for practical purposes, you will want to carry your podcasts and any lengthy tracks on a flashdrive or ums mp3 player. The alpine can speed search tracks on ums devices and it even remembers exactly where you left off within tracks when you disconnect the device and reconnect! Plus you can do all the same searching by artist, album, track, file name ect. So you're probably wondering, why not use a ums mp3 player exclusively? Two reasons. First, you won't get playlists. If you want playlists, you have to get a mtp player or iPod. Second there are currently no small ums flash players with large capacity (32 gb) and great sound (Sansa Fuze blows in comparison to Zen V Plus). Two other quick notes, there is no cd player and going to radio presets requires a few clicks. Finally, I want to mention how much better the sound quality is when you allow the Alpine's 24 bit burr brown d/a converter to process the sound (using usb connection) rather than letting the mp3 player decode the sound and send it into the car via minplug aux connection. If you current stereo plays mp3 cds, do a little experiment and listen to the same song on mp3 cd compared to your mp3 player plugged into the aux. Keep an eye on the horizon for when the Microsoft and Ford sync exclusive deal ends. Then you may be able to buy a non-Ford car or an aftermarket head unit that works with mtp mp3 players and has voice command. Should be within a year. One more thing, if you upgrade your Zen V firmware, the Alpine will control it too. Also, I can't tell you about the power of the internal amp because all my speakers have a separate amps. Even though it's the only game in town in aftermarket car stereos that can control mtp music players, it does an admirable job.

Easy control, super-fast music search and great sound make the iDA-X200 perfect for iPod users. The iDA-X200 and iDA-X100 come with a large Double-Action Rotary Encoder Knob - so you can utilize multiple functions like QuickSearch for finding your songs and adjusting your volume. Plus you get the best iPod sound experience thanks to a digital USB iPod connection. Better yet, go all the way with optional IMPRINT sound for the most ideal sound experience in your vehicle. In addition to the best solutions for your iPod and sound quality- the iDA-X200 features iTunes Tagging - so you can Tag songs you hear on HD radio, then automatically access them later through iTunes for purchase and download.

Dual XR4110 Review

Dual XR4110
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really want to get rid of CDs, especially in my car. I was hoping this player will do the trick, but I don't think it's quite there yet. I was willing to forgive some problems for the price I got it - about $35, but it sure makes it hard. Here are my problems:
1. There is no clock - since my car doesn't have one either, this is pretty important to me.
2. Playback restarts from the first song after every power off - this is the big one, especially since:
3. The display does not show track names - searching for a specific track is quite a chore, and since it restarts from the beginning every single time this becomes a real problem.
4. Problems reading SD cards. I am still not sure what exactly the problem is... First I only loaded one track so I could test it out during installation. All my music is in MP3 format and DRM free, I used WMP to sync the track to the SD card - it worked without a problem. After I finished installing it, I decided to load up the card (2GB SD, the unit is said to accept up to 16GB SDHC cards) again using WMP. I ended up with about 1.5 GB music, but when I inserted the card into the player nothing happened - the display remained stuck on a simple message saying "SD". I looked in the manual and it said that this message meant that there were no acceptable tracks on the card or that it is larger than 16GB. Since neither statement was true, I was not sure what the problem was. I reformatted the card and re-synced my music - again I got the same message. Then I tried loading fewer songs and this time it worked - I loaded only about 30. My first suspicion was that it would not recognize more than 35 tracks, which would've been a real deal breaker, but the manual confirmed that it accepts thousands of files.
I think I finally figured out what was causing the problem - I have some songs that for unknown to me reason appear twice in my WMP library, and since I was originally syncing my entire library to the SD card the duplicate files with the same name must have confused the player. Finally I added all of the songs I wanted one-by-one (real pain!) and this time it did work so that must have been the problem.
5. And last, but not least, a problem occurred as soon as I turned on the car - the player refused to power on, even though it was working just fine only minutes earlier, while the engine was not running. I had read this in another review so I immediately tried the solution - before starting the car, the key must be paused for a few seconds in the ACC position, before starting the engine - otherwise the DUAL would not power on. It is the strangest thing.
It really bums me out that this DUAL has so many issues; I was so looking forward to life without CDs, but I guess I will have to continue looking.
