Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette Player (Silver) Review

Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette Player (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the same item as the FX-290, now with a W added. Only difference is the absence of the TV audio band, which will be irrelevent next February. I ve had three of these walkmans in the past couple of years. One shattered upon impact to the ground. I didn't have the case on it, and with the other two the fast forward button, which I use quite a bit fell off.
That being said, this is probably the greatest walkman I ve owned. The radio cassette player is a dying breed and I m glad to see Sony put out a new version of an old favorite. With 35 hours on one AA battery, this is one of the great values. I still have hundreds of cassette tapes that I have taped from XM the last couple of years, and I still take my walks listening to those. Transferring to a CD is an option, but its too much of a bother. With the belt clip its so easy to just walk listening to a cassette, even though the sound quality is not as good as a CD,but it fits my purposes fine.
With AM and FM and all the presets, and a weather band this is a nice value for $30 and free shipping. I m glad I still have my other two units without the fast forward button. This is becoming a relic, and I want to make sure I have this walkman for some time to come. No MP3 for me. I m satisfied with this unit.

Sangean H201 AM/FM Digital Shower Radio Review

Sangean H201 AM/FM Digital Shower Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a lot of time reviewing other waterproof shower radios, and this one seemed to have a lot of customer satisfaction. I've been using this radio for about 4 weeks now. Such a big improvement of the previous radio I was using. The sound quality is very good and the signal reception is excellant. I use it in the basement bathroom and even tucked away in the shower in the basement, it manages to pull in the stations I had trouble receiving with the previous radio. Very nice.

Timex T300B Digital Tuning Clock Radio with Nature Sounds Review

Timex T300B Digital Tuning Clock Radio with Nature Sounds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am happy with this alarm clock. Period. It has some awesome features that I haven't seen on any other alarm clock. It also has some less useful features, but even if these were magically eliminated, you would still be left with a great clock.
UNIQUE and terrific features: 1. Sleep function: 90/60/30/15 min countdown at Normal/Low/Very Low volume. Here's the best part: the volume control on the side is over-ridden by the 3 sound levels. So if you want to fall asleep to low volume, the wake to radio alarm is at normal volume. (I don't know what Denys was talking about in previous review) Also, it can be a completely different station than the one you fell asleep to. 2. 3 alarms: radio or buzzer or nature or any combo. Easy to set a sort of progressive wake sequence: 1st alarm nature sound, then later radio, then last brain-splitting beeping. (see drawbacks below) 3. digital tuner. Try to find this feature in another clock for this price. Great reception. 12 FM presets (lots), plus 6 AM.
Other good features: decent sound from single speaker, three light levels from backlit display (though I would have preferred Indiglo), date on display, unlike others here I found it to be very easy to set all features "Buzzer" very much resembles the "beep" of a Timex watch, but much louder. The rhythm of the beeping increases every 10 sec or so. I'm a deep sleeper, and this works well.
DRAWBACKS (that would not keep me from buying this clock again, but why I gave it 4/5): 1. buttons a bit cheap feeling... whadya want for this price 2. clock/alarm set is forward only (bad), although you set hour/min separately (good). My last alarm clock had fast/slow, and you had to count around the clock to set something earlier - this drove me crazy. How hard could it have been to have up/down buttons? And there are already tuner up/down buttons there! 3. I was hoping (but not really expecting) that there was a bit more flexibility with the 3 alarms: ie. possible to set buzzer for all 3. Alas, the 3 alarms are one each of radio/buzzer/nature. 4. Nature sounds. All resemble white noise, as if recorded with a bad microphone. Not great for relaxing prior to sleep. However, surprisingly unobtrusive way to wake up in morning. 5. Backlit display on the lowest level is still a bit bright after your eyes have adjusted to dark.
Cheers Stink

Memorex MC1008 Shower CD Radio Review

Memorex MC1008 Shower CD Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My parents introduced this as my "expensive" Christmas gift, so I feel bad that they wasted so much money.
I put in the 6 C batteries and by the end of the cd, they were nearly drained. I bought more, but I couldn't get anything to work - no radio reception, screen read "error" every time I put in a cd. I bought an adapter, but still couldn't get it to work again. I tried for so long to get it going. Wish I'd read the reviews on this site earlier. I would've accepted that it was a shoddy product much earlier. Memorex has some cheek!

Kaito KA2031 - Portable radio Review

Kaito KA2031 - Portable radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This AM/FM/TV/weather band radio is quite a bargain right now at $19.95 on Amazon from Kaito Electronics. It best use is as a small portable or as a table radio, but it is definitely not a pocket model in size (for reference it is about the same size as that of a KA1102 AM/FM/SW receiver). It is a PLL (Phase locked Loop) synthesized, fully digital radio with a nice speaker although somewhat limited in its bandwidth as discussed briefly later on below.
The radio has some synthesizer noise evident, but I have found that this noise is only significant for the weakest stations, especially on the AM band. As with all the other bands, TV audio reception on channels 2-13 is also very good. It is very well made and has numerous features found only on radios costing much much more (a rear stand for setting the unit up on a tabletop, a quite long telescopic swiveling antenna, a DX/local switch, timed backlighting (8 sec), a lock switch, an earphone socket (earbuds are not provided), an AC adapter socket (the AC/DC adapter is not provided), a standard external antenna jack (the antenna wire is provided), a clock that can be displayed with the radio both on and off, two alarms, sleep and snooze modes, FM monaural as well as stereo capability, but NOT manually switchable to help with receiving the weaker stations, manual digital frequency entry and stepped as well as automatic scanned tuning, 20 preset memories (10 each for FM and AM) for storing station frequencies, an automatic NOAA severe weather alert/alarm mode, etc,).
Thus, it is also a very good emergency weather radio since all 7 standard USA NOAA weather channels are preset in memory (with slightly lower available volume since the transmitters are limited to a detection range of ~50 miles with typically only 100 Watts of broadcasting power). The geographic stations within this range are extremely well received by this radio at their individually assigned broadcasting frequency for that area.
It is also a good radio for daily listening, however there are no treble/base controls so music is not as fine as it would be on more expensive radios, but it is certainly adequate for voice and some music listening. It doesn't come with either a carrying pouch or batteries (it takes 3 AA's which provide the power needed for the digital system) or anything else but the radio, a length of antenna wire and a brief, but readable manual. For the current price it is extremely well worth the money. It comes with a standard one year Kaito warranty according to another very reliable radio website. It is a good radio and I recommend it.
UPDATE: March 26, 2008-
Eventually I found that my unit had severe problems with overloading, i.e., a large degree of signal distortion that was especially obvious at moderate to high volume levels. This distortion was found to be prevalent on any station using the FM stereo circuit and this condition was especially obvious using headphones. Using just the internal speaker however this problem was far less noticeable, but still needed further scrutiny by the manufacturer. The unit's FM monaural reception was absolutely fine using either the headphones or the internal speaker however. Since there was no mechanism built into the radio to turn off the FM stereo circuit and instead just listen using the monaural mode, I sent my unit back to Kaito and they promptly agreed and sent it back to the factory overseas for repairs.

The newly released Kaito KA2031 Digital Synthesized portable radio provides the most accurate drift-free tuning of all available radio stations for listening to radio talk and music shows on the AM/FM bands as well as up to the minute weather from your local Weather Band broadcasts. It can also give you real time weather alert even when the radio is off. With direct digit-entry operation and 10 direct keys for memory presets, this radio allows quick access to your favorite stations. There are twenty presets, 10 stations for AM and 10 for the FM.. One important feature of the KA2031 is the sleep/wake-up timer. With this feature, it is possible to not only have the radio turn off after a selected amount of time (10-90 minutes), but also to have the radio turn on at a preset time. This 3-band radio picks up FM, AM and weather channels. FM frequencies range between 87.6 and 108 MHz while AM frequencies range from 530 to 1710 kHz. You will pick up weather channels 1-7. Unlike some other radios with NOAA weather receptions, the KA2031 is pre-programmed with all 7 channels, from 1-7, so no more guess work when tuning in. You can listen to the radio via the speaker, or through optional headphones via the headphone jack. Whether through the built-in ferrite bar antenna or the telescopic FM and weather antenna, you are sure to receive the best possible reception. To power this sleek, ergonomic radio, use either an optional AC adapter or three AA batteries. Call toll free 866-524-8676 to order the AC adapter for this radio.

Sangean PR-D5 Portable Radio with Digital Tuning and RDS Review

Sangean PR-D5 Portable Radio with Digital Tuning and RDS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Half the price of my Tivoli Songbook, the PR-D5 has superior AM/FM reception, dual stereo speakers, and easy-to-use ergonomics, making it even better than the Sangean single-speaker Sonido. As a bedside radio, it has even better FM reception than my Sangean WR-2 but it lacks the WR-2's depth and heaviness, qualities I like in a bedside radio. For a lighter, portable radio with no remote, go for the PR-D5. If you want more luxury in your radio (remote, numerical volume indicator, heavier feel) and don't mind a slight compromise in FM reception, you might want to check out the Sangean WR-2, which is compatible with an upgraded FM antenna attachment.
One question many will have is why the PR-D5 goes for about 15 dollars less than the Sonido. The answer most likely is that the 2.5-inch stereo speakers on the PR-D5 don't have the richness nor the depth of the Sonido's 3-inch monoaural speaker.
Update: Ironically, I don't like listening to talk radio on dual speakers. This is not a technological issue, but psychological. The voices don't seem as focused as they do on the Sangean WR-2's monoaural speaker. So if you're a heavy AM talk radio listener, you might want to opt for the WR-2.
Second Update: To really test the FM on the PR-D5, I tried to pull in the weak college station 88.9. The PR-D5 pulled in the station with clarity, even better than my Eton S350. The verdict: My PR-D5 is my best performing AM/FM radio, even better than the Eton/Grundig S350. That says quite a lot. Even more astounding, the PR-D5 is 15 dollars cheaper.
Third Update: I brought my PR-D5 to my work office and like all the digital radios I've tried it suffered compromised reception. I succeeded more with my Tivoli Model Three (same as the Model One with the additional clock). So for your office, if it's full of computer interference, you might want to go with an upscale analog radio like the aforementioned Tivoli Model One or Three.

Sony SRF-HM33 Walkman FM/AM Stereo Headphone Radio with 20 Preset Stations Review

Sony SRF-HM33 Walkman FM/AM Stereo Headphone Radio with 20 Preset Stations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is by the far the best AM/FM headphone radio I've owned and I have owned quite a few. I searched every electronic store in my area trying to find a headphone like this and could only find it through amazon.com.
The clarity of the radio reception is excellent. Having 20 preset stations makes it so easy to switch stations when you don't like the song playing on the current station. This is also the most comfortable headphone radio I've had. I can wear it for hours and it never gets uncomfortable. I also can't deal with having the wired headphones or the ones you wear on your arm, so this one is ideal.
I actually liked this headphone so much I bought two more, one to keep at work and one to give to my husband. He likes it as much as I do.
For the people who gave this product such poor ratings, you must be abusive with your things. I use my headphone so much and switch stations constantly and I have never had any problems with it.
I highly recommend this headphone for anyone wanting a reliable, comfortable, great reception radio, with no wires and the ease of changing stations at the touch of a button.
