Clarion NX501 7-Inch Single DIN Multimedia Control Station with Touch Panel Control, USB and Built-In-Navigation/Bluetooth Review

Clarion NX501 7-Inch Single DIN Multimedia Control Station with Touch Panel Control, USB and Built-In-Navigation/Bluetooth
Average Reviews:

The NX501 has been installed now for three weeks. I'm using the GPS, HDTuner and External Mic. I also installed the Steering Wheel Controls and a SW Relay.
Installation took about 3 hours in my 2008 Tacoma. Configuration of the settings was very straight forward. I'm streaming Pandora from my BlackBerry and also have a USB drive in the glove box loaded with 4 GB of audio.
Bluetooth for both audio and phone are very clear and syncing is very simple. It was worth every penny even though I only budgeted $400 originally for the head unit.
Audio is clear, it switches between functions seamlessly and the touch screen is very functional. There are two issues that I'm working on: 1) Nav audio seems muted even though the audio setting is turned up all the way and 2) The head unit dimmer doesn't seem to integrate with my truck even though there is a wire for dimming...

Alpine IVA-W505 2-DIN Mobile Multimedia Station (Black) Review

Alpine IVA-W505 2-DIN Mobile Multimedia Station (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE:
Alpine's customer service did get in touch with me, and I was able to resolve my Navigation issues...therefore, I would move my rating from 4 to 5 stars - but it won't let me!
Original review:
First let me say that I thoroughly enjoy this Alpine head unit. It really does everything you can imagine from an entertainment / navigation unit.
BTW - I purchased a PMD-B200 portable navigation unit that 'docks' into the IVA-W505 head unit. In addition, I am using the optional USB cable to connect to my 80 GB iPod.
The head unit will play both video and audio from the iPod. Basically, it can play anything that your iPod can play (video, audio, books, TV shows, etc.). In addition the unit can sync to your phone via bluetooth (I happen to have an iPhone) and the phone book syncs every time I get into the car. The 'handsfree' works seamlessly - when someone calls me the audio mutes, and as soon as I am done with the call, the audio (music) comes back on at the level it was prior to the call - and song plays from where it was interrupted by the call.
On the navigation side of things, I like the 3D mode - you can watch points of interest go by on the map, etc etc. The 'sky' on the nav unit changes from day to night...simple, but cool feature.
Supposedly, there are over a million points of interest...to which many in my town seem to be in there...
One note - I haven't been able to figure out what the 'address book' is in the navigation unit - it didn't seem to sync from my phone - and I had to manually input the addresses I wanted in the address book - which is cool I guess, it limited the entries in the book itself.
In summary -
PROS -
-Access to navigation, phone, iPod, DVD/CD all in one unit - VERY COOL!!!
-Interfaces very well with iPod - all iPod functionality is available in head unit (previous head unit only partial iPod functionality, playlist only)
-Screen resolution is very good - which makes movies crystal clear, and helps in day time viewing.
-Many audio and video adjustments - from bass, treble, subwoofer, and high pass filter, to contrast, color, screen height/width etc., etc.
-Just good to have so much functionality in one head unit...CONS -
-Owners manual might as well not exist, I have a USB cable that doesn't seem to go to anything (it goes with the nav unit, but with no software updates, and no computer interface why include it??)
-Graphic User Interface (GUI) is REALLY funky - you have to learn how to use it - not intuitive at all (and I own 2 Macs, 1 PC, Xbox360) - there are actually two menus, one for the audio / video side and one for the navigation side - and each have their own 'setup' menus etc....
-NO support on the Navigation side of things - Alpine actually isn't releasing updates for the navigation maps, and NAVTEQ (the people who they purchased the maps from send you back to Alpine (NAVTEQ's customer service was quick to respond and outstanding)
Overall, I am EXTREMELY pleased with the performance of the unit, and would recommend it to anyone.

the screen went out a month after use, had it professionally wired in so I can have that peace of mind and nope. The touch screen goes out, tried to contact the company and no response, reseted it, replace all my related fuses and nothing. still under warranty so i think nothing of it but before I can get find the info on returning it some loser steals it out my truck. Don't wanna say buy a better model by cost, but maybe I shouldn't have taken the cheap route.
Now I have a boss one lesser in screen size and love it. thanks

I bought the Dual DVDN9131 at Wal-mart on 1-23-10. Today is 3-6-10 and I just shipped it back to Dual to be fixed or replaced. The unit worked fine when I first installed it, but now when I try to use the blue tooth to make phone calls people cannot understand what I am saying. My voice is Garbled like I am talking under water or something. I contacted Dual customer support and they told me to ship it back for repair or replace. I don't know what to expect from here, I have never owned any Dual products before. This radio seems to be a nice unit, I just hope they take care of the problem in a timley manner.

I ordered this item from Amazon. Once I had it professionally installed I was informed that it was a faulty radio because my Drivers side tweeter wouldn't work with it but would with other tested radios. I informed Amazon and they overnighted another radio to me and once it was installed I was very impressed. Looks great in a car with a double din. Plays DVD flawlessly! Touch screen is very responsive and many options etc!! My speakers are much louder and more clear now with this unit. Would recommend buying from Amazon before going to your audio shop where they would charge you much more!

Average Reviews:

Very bad software.
The audio and video quality is acceptable, but the software does not work well. When you turn it takes some time to give sound. Bluetooth mode is too slow to get the list of contacts from your mobile phone and can not find one by one, I have to dial the number directly on the screen, moreover, gives little information that you supply it at random. Songs from a flash drive you have to find them one at a time. You can not drag the cursor and go from the start to end but at a time. The screen saver sometimes work and sometimes not. I am disappointed with this purchase. Not recommend it for anything. Buy Pioneer, Clarion or any other brand of prestige. This does not work.

I wanted so bad to love this HU (head unit) but I can't. What you get for the price is amazing but it comes with it's down sides...
Pro's:
DVD picture quality is perfect (I don't think you could get much better)
Motorized face is nice
Touch sensitive buttons work well
Good Price
Nice Remote
Con's:
Sound quality is average or less
Bass and treble adjustments only, no other audio fine tuning available
Touch screen was intermittent, sometimes it was good and sensitive, sometimes you had to press hard or multiple times
Very annoying buzzing/ringing sound when an auxiliary device is plugged in
Some DVD's froze/skipped (DVD's were in perfect condition)
Subtitles kept coming on while playing DVD's. Had to keep going in the menu and turning them off
Takes forever for a disc to load (either CD or DVD)
Can't do anything else while a CD is playing (ie., can't adjust audio settings while disc is playing, but can in AUX mode or am/fm)
I expect a lot from my car stereo systems and I have been doing this for 15+ years. I think this HU would be good for an entry level user or someone not as picky as me. Also I hope the other ones don't have the AUX input buzzing/ringing that mine did. Remember that one key thing your parents always told you......You get what you pay for!

I purchased this unit due to the clean exterior with minimal blue backlit buttons. When it wow factor this is not the unit for that. It has a lot of features but the actual software is basic bare bones. You have your usual bass, treble, fade and such but no screensaver and no animations. The thermostat looking volume indicator is cartoonish. I love the body of this one but the software of the PLD70BT is better. I will review that later. This one I could never get the RDS functions to work. So I just said forget it. The remote is pretty flat and not too big. Like a long credit card but thicker and the buttons flatter that typical tv remotes. Otherwise, if you want a good touch screen and are using it for basics or with a back up camera. This is not bad but don't expect really nice display or great looking backgrounds.

Power Acoustik PTID-7350NRBT 6.95-Inch In-Dash Widescreen TFT/LCD Monitor with DVD

Pros: Large, motorized screen, has all the features you find in higher end units.
Cons: Screens and displays are very blocky and unattractive. Large blocks of text get in the way of what you're trying to see. Nothing is intuitive except setting stations. Sends you to subscreens for everything, even simple tasks like changing tracks.Summary: The Power Acoustik gives you a lot of features for the money. However the buyer should be aware that you're getting what you pay for here. It definitely does everything it says (if you're lucky. I had problems with 2 units). It's how it does it that bother me. Yes you get a big screen, but it's one of the ugliest displays I've seen. Yes, it's touch screen, but you have to touch it a LOT to do the simplest thing. For example if you're listening to a cd and simply want to go to the next track, you'll have to touch the screen, which in turn brings up a series of boxes with text. Aside from the fact that these boxes are huge and ugly and block most of what you're trying to see in the first place, it's very clunky and distracting when in most higher end unit you can just touch the track you want on the screen.
When listening to a dvr cdr full of music, the unit gets Kudos for even being able to play it. But it takes about 30 seconds for it to load before you hear any music at all. And you'll have to do that every single time you turn the key off, even for a second. Imagine a day of running errands. While you're waiting on the cd to load, all other functions are inoperable, so you can't even switch to the radio while you wait.
When you have a cd full of mp3 files loaded you'll get a split screen with the album title on the left and the track listings on the right. Nice. But again, instead of simply touching the track or title listing you want, when you touch the screen you get those big blocky text things. Then you must touch the "Left" or "right" button. Once you get to the side of the screen you want you must painstakingly toggle up and down to the title you want by repeatedly touching huge blocks printed with the words "up" and "down". Once you finally have what you want highlighted you still have to touch the big huge "enter" block to make it play, then "exit" to get all that crap off the screen.
Keep in mind that all this stuff appears over the top of the listings your trying to see.
When you compare that to say, a Pioneer unit where you simply touch your finger on the screen and drag it down to move the list of songs up and down, then touch the one you want....you start to understand why they cost more. And you wonder if it's worth the extra money. In my case, absolutely. This unit has all of the features of the Pioneer I was looking at, a bigger screen than the one I was looking at and even an sd drive that the pioneer unit didn't have. But in hindsight I would gladly pay $100-$200 more for a double din that just works more intuitively and looks better doing it (the sd drive in the one I have, a replacement unit, doesn't work by the way).

I bought this for my Hyundai Sonata. The price was great given the built in features. So many decks come with "ready" and "compatible" features--which is fancy for "buy them separately."
I installed this myself and couldn't believe how easy it was, however....
You will more than likely need to custom trim the dask kit. This deck face slides out and needs clearance. I had to trim about an 8th of an inch at the top and sides. It came out great with my dremmel tool.
I did another goofy thing and bought the wrong wire harness. I didn't need one for "premium sound" system. I just had to cut the electronic instrument and simply crimped the wires together.
So, for the price, I'd say this is well worth it.
Keep in mind that I have only had it installed and working since Christmas day. Hopefully it will last long. I bought the square-deal three-year warranty just in case!

I purchased this unit for my vehicle, and couldn't be happier! Very solid unit, lots of options, fairly straightforward install. My only complaint is the minimal installation instructions, presumably because Clarion prefers that their stereos be professionally installed, however, I didn't really have any problems installing it.
UPDATE: DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE LIMIT OF THE NUMBER OF SONGS ON A USB DRIVE! Manual says 1500 max...I have 2350 on an 8GB drive, and it is rocking just fine...

I Received My DNX-7140 a week ago. I had no trouble installing it. It is extremely packed with value and even sounds good without an external amplifier.
Kenwood DNX7140 6.95-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with Built-in Bluetooth USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver
Pros: Garmin Navigation, DVD, IPOD Connectivity(however you need the Kenwood adapter $30 to have full functionality), Back up camera (separately about $200), Excellent Sound
CONS: My Bluetooth Microphone didn't work at first. The System needed a firmware upgrade for the bluetooth and after resetting the factory settings it worked perfectly.
Bottom Line: It really is an impressive unit, Picture quality is good with DVD's and IPOD Videos. Touch Screen is responsive and GPS is Amazing!!!
The GPS is super accurate, shows the speed limit, your speed, arrival time, sets the clock automatically, and even changes time zones the second you cross the border!!
It is amazing, even changes speed limits exactly at the sign.
Overall I Recommend this product it is pretty awesome

Input and Output In addition to the iPod and USB support, you can use the DNX7140's front auxiliary A/V input to connect external audio/video sources like video game systems.
The unit also features an A/V output for sending content to an additional screen in the vehicle.

Clarion VX409 6.5-Inch Double-DIN Multimedia Station with Touch-Panel Control Station Review

Clarion VX409 6.5-Inch Double-DIN Multimedia Station with Touch-Panel Control Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this unit in my 2009 Subaru WRX. I removed it and returned it after 3 days.
The good:
-It has a good amount of power. I ran this to my stock speakers and they sounded much, much better than they did with the factory receiver.
-Good build quality. The physical unit feels well made. Mechanical flip face works smoothly, buttons and volume dial feel solid.
-It's cheap.
The bad:
-iPod integration is terrible. There is no way to easily scroll through artists/albums etc. You have to click an arrow to flip through each individual entry. This is OK if you have a couple albums on a nano, but not OK if you plan to connect an iPod with a large library. Finding an artist beginning with 'N' took close to 100 clicks with my full 120GB iPod classic. And if you want to go from Nelly to Nirvana, you have to start all over from 'A' again.
-Poor screen resolution. Font edges are jagged.
-No dimmer. It has a dimmer connection wire, but it did not work on my unit. The screen was at full brightness at all times, and the manual dimmer control did not work either. At night it was like having a spotlight in my dash.
-Restarts between sources. Every time you change sources, the entire unit restarts. Screen shuts off then on and everything. It doesn't take too long, 3-4 seconds maybe, but it is rather odd and obnoxious. I took the whole thing out to check for a loose connection when it first happened. Called Clarion about it and they said it is normal operation.
-Navigation. The specs list this unit as being compatible with an optional navigation unit. However, the only input for the navigation unit is a component video connection. So if you were to connect navigation, the VX409 would only serve as a monitor, and you would not have touch screen control of anything.
Overall, the actual physical unit could be quite nice. However the software feels like going back to using Windows 95.

Clarion VX400 6.5-Inch In-Dash Double-DIN Touchscreen DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver with Bluetooth Review

Clarion VX400 6.5-Inch In-Dash Double-DIN Touchscreen DVD/CD/MP3/USB Receiver with Bluetooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this item quickly and packed very well. The unit itself is nice looking and fit in my 2006 F-150 nicely. It is important to get the wiring harness adapter and installation kit. I was able to get my steering wheel inputs to work with the PAC SWIJACK Steering Wheel Remote Interface unit sold here on Amazon. I read mixed reviews on the steering wheel interface but I got mine to work.
The GUI is easy to use but it is not intuitive.
The Bluetooth found and downloaded my address book from my iPhone with no trouble. The built-in microphone is not the best. I suspect that it is because you are so far away from it. Beware that only one speaker (you can chose front right or left) will produce the sound from your caller. One nice thing is that you can adjust the volume for calls; it remembers that setting and does not affect the volume from the rest of the audio sources. In other words, if I am listening to music at volume level of 10, then raise the volume to 35 during a call and return to music the volume will go back to 10 for the music. The next and any call after will remain on volume level 35.
Playing Ipod tunes is awful on this unit. The library layout is not as good as the iPod/iPhone. I looked up songs by artist and found that some of the albums are missing. I can find them if I switch to locating by album but this should not happen. On several occasions while listening to music from my iPhone and then received a call, the music was still heard (although at a low level). Another bad thing is that if you have the iPod/iPhone hooked up to the unit before you power up the audio does not come through. I have to disconnect, reconnect, wait for the unit to "see" it then the audio will come through.
Playing CDs and DVDs is easy and sound great.
Other than playing music from my iPhone, I am pleased with this unit. I had the high end factory Audiophile in my vehicle before this unit. The factory unit was good, but I do notice a difference in sound quality with this unit.
I have come back to this review after I have had the unit for awhile now. I have given it one less star. I pursched the Sat radio adapter for it and it is driving me crazy. The problem is the software in the head unit. It will not remember the last station you were on once you turn the system off. This means everytime I listen to sat radio, I have to select the channel I want. I say the problem is the head unit because I was finally able to get someone from Clarion to look into the problem. After weeks of researching the issue, they called me and told me that I need to remove the unit and send it back to Clarion for a software update. They told me they would email the RMA number and address to send it to. Problem is not only having my heaad unit gone for 6 weeks, Clarion has not sent me the RMA and location to send it to. That was 2 months ago....

Clarion's VX400 gives you a premium multimedia receiver with intuitive touch panel control and clean, cutting-edge faceplate design. The VX400 is a double-DIN unit with a 6.5-inch touch panel. It offers built-in Bluetooth for hands-free operation and audio streaming, wide format support, USB audio for iPhone and iPod, front and rear A/V inputs, and plenty more. Plus with six channels of preamp output, rear vision camera input, support for HD/SAT radio, and more, there's room to grow. A significant and stylish upgrade to simple factory radios.

Built-in Bluetooth Hands-Free Calling With Bluetooth built in, you can wirelessly connect your Bluetooth-capable mobile phone to listen to calls through your car's audio system. HFP/OPP/A2DP/AVRCP protocols are supported.
Superior iPod and iPhone Connectivity USB connection enables complete control of your iPod, including video playback. Also "Works with iPhone" certified to bring its communication and entertainment capabilities into your car.
HD Radio Ready with iTunes Tagging Connecting the THD400 lets you enjoy listening to digitally broadcast radio programs with all their superior quality and helpful information. This includes iTunes Tagging capability, so if you hear a song on the radio that you like, you can tag it to download later from the iTunes Store. Save time finding and accumulating the tunes you want.
Sirius Direct Connect Ready Connect to any Sirius Direct Connect Satellite Radio receiver without any need for an interface box--and enjoy over 130 channels of music, news, talk shows, sports, and traffic information with digital-quality sound throughout the United States and Canada.
Two AV AUX Inputs/CCD Input VZ400 is equipped with two RCA jacks for AV AUX input. In addition to being able to hook up an external video source for viewing in your car, the inputs also accept video signals from Clarion's rear vision CCD camera, which lets you see the area behind your car for safer driving and parking.
Touch Panel-Controlled GUI The GUI (graphical user interface) shows large icons that are highly visible and easily recognizable at a glance. And thanks to the touch panel screen, accessing each function is as intuitive as touching its icon. This very straightforward system lets the driver keep his attention on the road and enables front seat passengers to use any desired function without the need to "learn" anything. What's more, since the vast majority of functions are controllable from the touch panel, there are only four physical buttons on the unit for the most basic and commonly used functions.
Navigation Touch Panel Operation The NP400 hideaway navigation system can be connected to the VZ400 directly and controlled through its touch panel. So with this multimedia station, you can upgrade to a car navigation system at any time. Count on voice guidance messages and high-resolution map displays to get you safely to your destination.
6-Channel/2 V RCA Output with Subwoofer Control With three sets of RCA outputs, you are free to add external power amplifiers to create a more powerful, sophisticated audio system. Also, independent volume control is enabled for the subwoofer so you can adjust the level of bass output to your liking at any time, regardless of the output level of the other channels.
Low-Pass Filter for Subwoofer Switching on the low-pass filter (LPF) will send only the low-frequency range through specified outputs to ensure superb performance with a connected subwoofer. A must if you have or plan to add a subwoofer to your system.

Alpine IXA-W407 - Digital player with LCD monitor and radio Review

Alpine IXA-W407 - Digital player with LCD monitor and radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been searching for a while for something that will work properly with the iPhone. A lot of the units I've come across seem to work with the iPod but then throw up that unsupported device message on the iPhone, not what I wanted. Took a bit of a gamble on this as it was fairly new when I ordered, but I've had rock solid performance from Alpine in the past so I went with it.
The install's not too bad. I was replacing a double DIN unit so it slotted straight in. The wiring wasn't too much trouble, pretty standard stuff with well labelled wires and a good manual. The hardest part was figuring out the wiring from the Subaru factory harness, but no big deal really. If buying this unit, you really want to get the PAC TR7 Universal Trigger Module as well. Without it you'll need to tap into the park brake and foot brake which can be a major pain. Instead you can connect this little module in and bypass the lockout 'feature' which prevents you from watching video and changing any settings unless both brakes are on.
Once installed the unit seems to work fine. Radio reception is really good with no static, don't have Sirius here so can't vouch for that but I'm sure it works fine. Working with the iPhone is great, I just get in connect the phone and the music starts. Sometimes it'll start from the beginning of the song list meaning that I keep getting the same song on startup, but I just hit 'next' and it soon skips to the next random song. I think this might happen if you use the phone for something else whicl you're out of the car. If you leave it in the iPod app it might just pick up from where it left off. Would need to test this though.
Bluetooth has worked really well. The unit and iPhone found each other and paired quickly, syncing contacts. Now I just jump into the car and they connect automatically. Call clarity is really good with the supplied mic, people say they can't tell I'm using a handsfree set in the car.
Only real trouble has been with streaming audio over Bluetooth via A2DP. When streaming audio there was a tiny pause in the music every 20-30 seconds. Sometimes the problem disappeared and sometimes it was really bad. It made using streaming audio impossible so I've disabled it. Looks like the problem is with the way Apple have implemented A2DP on the phone and not the fault of Alpine. This was made worse because as soon as Bluetooth connected, it would start streaming, overriding the wired iPhone source that was already running and causing problems. If you need to stop this behaviour and have a jailbroken iPhone, look on Cydia for an app called BTPS which lets you disable A2DP and therefore audio streaming. Works great and all the other phone functions over Bluetooth still work.
Haven't tried the nav unit either. Using TomTom on the iPhone so no need really.
Audio quality is great as you'd expect from Alpine. Some of the screen graphics can look a little low-res at times, but video plays fine and looks really good.
Great unit in all, highly recommended.

Clarion NX409 6.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

Clarion NX409 6.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I debated buying this NX409 but couldn't resist the price/feature list. While it's loaded with about every feature you could want not all of them work or don't work the way they should.
Navigation:
The GPS doesn't update fast enough so that the vehicle position indicator is not correctly displayed on the map relative to the cross streets especially at speed. The turn by turn voice guidance sometimes says to turn right when you actually are turning left. Many of the POI's are not accurate both for location on the map and also that some don't exist. If you can get beyond the robotic tone and poor text to speech pronunciation...the voice guidance also truncates some road names. Two of the features listed in the GPS menu don't work at all (like the alert tone option when you are approaching your turn). This may be a software bug as they won't even stay selected.
Sirius Radio:
Mostly works well except way too often you'll power the unit up and all the presets you spent time getting just the way you want are gone. That gets old after about the 5th time.
Ipod:
I plugged in my Shuffle to the USB port and it says "unrecognized file format". So I thought I'd check that it's on the list of supported Ipods on the Clarion site. Click on Ipod compatability list and gee..."page not found". At least there's some synergy between their products and the web site.
Other:
The Bluetooth BLT 370 option is a waste of money. Way too often when you start the car it will lock up the radio with a "phone in use" displayed( even when there is no cell phone within a mile of the vehicle)...you then have to shut off the ignition and open the door to get it to power down then restart the car. It sync's up with the phone great but everyone says I sound like I'm calling from the Mariana trench.
The clock setting can only be set manually. When you select your correct time zone and DST to sync the time using the GPS it's off by two hours.
Last but not least Clarion's support both on the web site and by phone is a waste of time.
On a positive note the quality of the audio is very good as is the DVD display.
