(More customer reviews)The NX501 has been installed now for three weeks. I'm using the GPS, HDTuner and External Mic. I also installed the Steering Wheel Controls and a SW Relay.
Installation took about 3 hours in my 2008 Tacoma. Configuration of the settings was very straight forward. I'm streaming Pandora from my BlackBerry and also have a USB drive in the glove box loaded with 4 GB of audio.
Bluetooth for both audio and phone are very clear and syncing is very simple. It was worth every penny even though I only budgeted $400 originally for the head unit.
Audio is clear, it switches between functions seamlessly and the touch screen is very functional. There are two issues that I'm working on: 1) Nav audio seems muted even though the audio setting is turned up all the way and 2) The head unit dimmer doesn't seem to integrate with my truck even though there is a wire for dimming...

(More customer reviews)I purchased this unit for the navigation and MP3 functionality. Unfortunately use can't use both at the same time. You can use the radio with the navigation, but then you are limited to the weak reception of the radio on non-urban areas or traveling across longer distances. You cannot use the CD player with the navigation system either. The MP3 player randomization function is predictable and constant. The play will always start with the first file on the SD card and the next song is picked randomly. However, each time you get into the car the same random songs are played in the same random order. This unit is a nice unit if you only want it to do one thing at a time, however, do not ask the unit to do more than one thing at a time. When I get a chance I will swap this unit out for a better one and sell it on e-bay.

One thing I find great is you can set a background on the display. Has so many inputs and outputs. I have my whole system amplified via Front, Rear, and Sub amps, so I can't say how the sound quality through the built-in amp is. I may add a video review later, because there are SO many things this head unit does! I HIGHLY recommend this unit!

The unit boots slowly, so no music, GPS or video for some number of minutes! This is after the latest SW upgrade that supposedly fixes this problem, I can't imagine earlier versions.
The display is not visible in sunlight and/or with polarized lenses. (Does anyone at Pioneer test this junk?)
The GPS can only be programmed after the car is started and while the car is in park and the e-brake is on! I guess passengers manipulating the nav system is a rare thing.
The USB memory stick must be unplugged and re-installed after the car is started to access the contents!
The volume/main control knob is very difficult to grip and operate, what were they thinking? (They were probably thinking everyone has small fingers)
The user interface is not consistent. The positions of the same functions move around from display to display for no good reason.
The bling noise cannot be turned off for the steering wheel controls. Come on guys, this unit is computer based, there's no reason for this type of inflexibility.
If the devil is in the details this unit is, unfortunately, be-deviled!!! In my opinion, this system was slapped together with little thought for the customer by people that do not understand or care how a nav a/v system should perform.
I am certain there are better units out there for this price point. If I were seeking an in dash nav a/v unit, I would keep looking for some other Manufacturers comparable system.

Alpine IVA-W505 2-DIN Mobile Multimedia Station (Black) Review

Alpine's customer service did get in touch with me, and I was able to resolve my Navigation issues...therefore, I would move my rating from 4 to 5 stars - but it won't let me!
Original review:
First let me say that I thoroughly enjoy this Alpine head unit. It really does everything you can imagine from an entertainment / navigation unit.
BTW - I purchased a PMD-B200 portable navigation unit that 'docks' into the IVA-W505 head unit. In addition, I am using the optional USB cable to connect to my 80 GB iPod.
The head unit will play both video and audio from the iPod. Basically, it can play anything that your iPod can play (video, audio, books, TV shows, etc.). In addition the unit can sync to your phone via bluetooth (I happen to have an iPhone) and the phone book syncs every time I get into the car. The 'handsfree' works seamlessly - when someone calls me the audio mutes, and as soon as I am done with the call, the audio (music) comes back on at the level it was prior to the call - and song plays from where it was interrupted by the call.
On the navigation side of things, I like the 3D mode - you can watch points of interest go by on the map, etc etc. The 'sky' on the nav unit changes from day to night...simple, but cool feature.
Supposedly, there are over a million points of interest...to which many in my town seem to be in there...
One note - I haven't been able to figure out what the 'address book' is in the navigation unit - it didn't seem to sync from my phone - and I had to manually input the addresses I wanted in the address book - which is cool I guess, it limited the entries in the book itself.
In summary -
PROS -
-Access to navigation, phone, iPod, DVD/CD all in one unit - VERY COOL!!!
-Interfaces very well with iPod - all iPod functionality is available in head unit (previous head unit only partial iPod functionality, playlist only)
-Screen resolution is very good - which makes movies crystal clear, and helps in day time viewing.
-Many audio and video adjustments - from bass, treble, subwoofer, and high pass filter, to contrast, color, screen height/width etc., etc.
-Just good to have so much functionality in one head unit...CONS -
-Owners manual might as well not exist, I have a USB cable that doesn't seem to go to anything (it goes with the nav unit, but with no software updates, and no computer interface why include it??)
-Graphic User Interface (GUI) is REALLY funky - you have to learn how to use it - not intuitive at all (and I own 2 Macs, 1 PC, Xbox360) - there are actually two menus, one for the audio / video side and one for the navigation side - and each have their own 'setup' menus etc....
-NO support on the Navigation side of things - Alpine actually isn't releasing updates for the navigation maps, and NAVTEQ (the people who they purchased the maps from send you back to Alpine (NAVTEQ's customer service was quick to respond and outstanding)
Overall, I am EXTREMELY pleased with the performance of the unit, and would recommend it to anyone.

Panasonic Strada 7-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)I got this Unit WAY before any of the previous review does, so I already know how this unit works inside out.
yes it has the problem that previous reviewers say but, should we even call those *problems* ? I mean, some of the things could be easily fixed with a simple firmware update. This is Panasonic's first attempt to enter the US's In dash Navigation market. They have great Units in Japan, but I guess Panasonic Japan does not share information with their USA side. So they have to create this from scratch.
Let me list what this unit can do/cant do.
-It can Play MP3 on CD-R/RW, but it cannot read MP3 on DVD+R/RW/-R/-RW.
-It seems that it does not like bad quality CD-R, my friend's cheap CD-R having mad issue with this unit. but mine plays just fine. Well, we should all get quality stuff isnt it ?
-It takes a lot longer, sometimes failed to read DVD-R/RW disc.
-It's DVD playback is Region locked to Region 1, but is not hard to overcome that problem (I think its illegal to say it here)
-Map is based on Navteq's 2005 data, yes you got that right, unit that's out in 2007 still using 2005's map data(maybe because its cheaper, who knows), because I ran into couple of roads that has been changed, one even changed from 2 way into 1 way, almost got me killed. So you better MAKE SURE that you're in the right side of the road.
-Remember to select your route preference before you start your guide. because by default, it does not allow Highway, does not allow tolls, does not allow anything. that means, all local if possible. That might be cool for some people, but I didnt know about it the first time I use it, because my other Unit has the Allow toll and Allow highway option enabled by default. So I ended up spending like 3 hours on something that I suppose to be there in 1 and 1/2 hour.
-The route guidance is kind of funny, sometimes the shortest route that it shows does NOT mean its really the shortest. So if you know that you're already going the shortest route, do NOT listen to the unit.
-It plays back MP3 fine, quality is ok.
-CD Play back is fine, plays original disc no problem, if you want to use a backup, you better make sure the cd-R quality is good.
-You CANNOT record your inserted CD into the HDD. I have no idea what Panasonic is thinking on this one, because as far as I know, the map data used about 10GB of space, that means, in the other words, about 20GB of disc space is there to collecting dust. Maybe a future update will resolve this. who knows.
-HDD unit runs really fast, it takes less than 1 second to get the route out, by default, it shows you 3 routes.
-This unit runs really hot, yes it has a fan behind but ... I would suggest you to turn the screen off if its not in use. it reduce the heat by maybe 30% (rough estimate)
-Screen is big enough, a bit bigger than Pioneer's 7" unit. and the screen is really clear, tried a lot of DVDs on it very good picture quality.
-Fast startup time, about 10 seconds or so.
-Oh yes, did I say the map is not very up to date? Maybe Panasoinc wants to get more money out from us. Anyway, the map data is FAR FROM complete. I cannot find some of the address at all, when I can just do a google search and it pops up right away.
-The way to enter address is kind of funky, you have to enter the way THEY want you to enter, for example, if you want to go 123 Avenue, there're couple of "possbilities", it could be 123th AVE, it could be 123 th AVENUE, 123th AVENUE, 123 AVE, or 123 AVENUE. Keep that in mind.
I still have more to say, but I'll leave those alone.
Is this a good unit ? I think so, if you're looking for fastest and cheapest price HDD unit that *works*, this is a unit for you. but you BETTER MAKE SURE, you try them out first at a store or something.
Im happy with this unit, hey I mean for couple hundred bucks, you get a HDD NAV with dvd playback ? My father's brand NEW CX-7 with all options loaded, all he got was a DVD navigation that cant even play DVD-videos!
Im also 100% sure that Panasonic will update this unit to bring more features out. So dont worry too much about it. Couple hundred bucks only, get it !

DVD picture quality is perfect (I don't think you could get much better)
Motorized face is nice
Touch sensitive buttons work well

Con's:
Sound quality is average or less
Bass and treble adjustments only, no other audio fine tuning available
Touch screen was intermittent, sometimes it was good and sensitive, sometimes you had to press hard or multiple times
Very annoying buzzing/ringing sound when an auxiliary device is plugged in
Some DVD's froze/skipped (DVD's were in perfect condition)
Subtitles kept coming on while playing DVD's. Had to keep going in the menu and turning them off
Takes forever for a disc to load (either CD or DVD)
Can't do anything else while a CD is playing (ie., can't adjust audio settings while disc is playing, but can in AUX mode or am/fm)
I expect a lot from my car stereo systems and I have been doing this for 15+ years. I think this HU would be good for an entry level user or someone not as picky as me. Also I hope the other ones don't have the AUX input buzzing/ringing that mine did. Remember that one key thing your parents always told you......You get what you pay for!

Motorola Car Mount for DROID 2 Review

I bought it from Verizon Store at the time of DROID 2 purchase (Extra discount on phone accessories that makes most of the genuine accessories much cheaper than anywhere else).
Anyhow, it is good to know that Motorola seem to redesigned their navigation mount this time around for DROID 2. Now, you can have your phone stably place on your navigation mount while keeping the case on!
I'm not sure if all the DROID 2 navigation dock comes in a package in a way that the "insert" is already tightly inserted onto its main dock. Well, mine did... and I hated it. I wished if I could have the navigation mount that is usable while keeping the case on.
It took me a while to figure this out...
I actually spent a good one month or so without knowing it and did take the case off every time I'm in my car. Yeah...It was a huge drag... (I still loved it's stability though)
Because of the hassle, I came to very close to just abandoning it and getting an universal navigation mount that would fit my DROID 2 while keeping its case on. And then I found out that Motorola DROID 2 A955 Multimedia Docking Station can be used while I keep the case on after removing the insert (please read my review for the product IF interested)...
And I thought, "Hmmm... so if things worked out with the multimedia docking station, shouldn't it work with the navigation mount too??"
So I tried to see if I could remove the insert from the main dock.
It didn't come off easily. This is because the gap between the main dock and the insert is practically none and I didn't want to damage the dock body. It was necessary to detach the main dock from the arm before I proceed to the next step.
I used two different kind of flat-head screwdrivers (i.e., one small, one medium) in order to separate the two. I first used the small flat-head to make a small gap between the insert and the dock. And then I inserted the bigger flat-head between the gap and pushed the insert further apart from the main dock). IT PROBABLY THE BEST IF YOU WORK ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE MOUNT SINCE THE SCRATCHES WON'T BE SO VISIBLE EVEN IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY DAMAGE THE BODY.
It took several attempts before they came apart.
It is a good thing that Motorola built the mount so steadily, but it takes a gentle, yet firm force to separate the two.Pros:
- Compatibility (Fits DROID 2 with or without a case)
- Durability (This navigation mount does not shake or move once it's placed right).
I use suction cup to mount against the front glass and from the day one (it's been about a month),
it never came off. It's still attached to the glass as strong as the day one.
- Stability (This navigation mount is built very solid and won't come off nor shake the phone).
- You can adjust the angle in anyway you want.
- There is a charging output on the back of the mount. So you can just put the phone in its place and it starts charging as long as you keep the phone on the mount, which is crucial as battery drains while using Google Map Navigation.
Cons:
- It took a while to figure out how to set it up right (Had to use two screwdrivers...)
- Package doesn't include car charger
- Aux cable is no use if your vehicle doesn't have it's input or is not equipped with bluetooth system (just like my old car. I only have a cassette tape player and I would need to get something like this:Xm Auto Cassette Adapter in order to get a better sound.

Alpine IVA-W205 2-DIN DVD/CD/MP3/WMA Receiver/AV Head Unit (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)Picked up an IVA-W205 for my 2008 Saturn Vue Redline. Double DIN fits like a glove and the standard $29 bezel keeps it well appointed in the Redline's elegant interior (never thought I'd type the words "elegant" and "Saturn" in the same sentence)! ;-P
Anyway, the IVA-W205 does not dissappoint: the screen quality is excellent, with a defined color palette that *pops* - especially in bright sunlight. The pulse-touch LCD makes it feel as though you are pushing a button when you touch the screen - a welcome feature.
DVD navigation is intuitive and works well. No, straight out of the box, you cannot view a DVD-video from the built-in screen while driving...unless your installer offers a toggle switch to get around that (mine did!). Audio sub-features (bass, treble, width, minor freq. adjustments, subwoofer, etc) are all there, and easier to traverse thanks to the visual GUI.
Installed the iPod cable connector for my 60GB iPod Photo; makes playlist and artist/song navigation a snap with the large touchscreen LCD.
Integrates with OnStar and steering-wheel controls if you purchase the standard add-ons to make it work, but look forward to dropping another $200-$300 for that. Don't bother with the Bluetooth add-on if you plan to use it with a Blackbird PMD-200, as the Blackbird PMD-200 has Bluetooth built-in and the IVA-W205 syncs with it (hence, your phone syncs with a PMD-200 and your PMD-200 syncs with your IVA-W205 while in the dock).
About the only complaint I have is Alpine's absolutely horrific choice of GUI graphics (no customizable wallpapers, jerky scrolling of song title/artist info, just plain old..."PLAIN"... user interface - it's 2007 Alpine - get with the times)!

(More customer reviews)Pioneer has acknowledged that the first release of this system had issues ... freezing up, parking break warning for no reason, lack of proper brightness, etc. But they issued an upgrade in July of 2008. THIS UPDATE FIXES EVERYTHING.
I have this unit, I used it before the update (lots of problems -- all clearly explained in multiple posts all over the internet). But I downloaded the firmware, installed it, and now it works AWESOME. I truly have to give it to Pioneer for acknowledging their error and spending time to listen to owners and fix it.
I love this unit. I hook up my Iphone 3G and watch podcasts, listen to music, and everything. I have SM radio for it and I use the GPS all the time. I use the bluetooth with my iphone and the call clarity is fantastic.
I'm serious when I say this is a great value and much better than the D3 unit it replaced, but you have to install the firmware. Do that and I'll love it.

My only complaint is the minimal installation instructions, presumably because Clarion prefers that their stereos be professionally installed, however, I didn't really have any problems installing it.
UPDATE: DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE LIMIT OF THE NUMBER OF SONGS ON A USB DRIVE! Manual says 1500 max...I have 2350 on an 8GB drive, and it is rocking just fine...

CONS: My Bluetooth Microphone didn't work at first. The System needed a firmware upgrade for the bluetooth and after resetting the factory settings it worked perfectly.
Bottom Line: It really is an impressive unit, Picture quality is good with DVD's and IPOD Videos. Touch Screen is responsive and GPS is Amazing!!!
The GPS is super accurate, shows the speed limit, your speed, arrival time, sets the clock automatically,and even changes time zones the second you cross the border!!
It is amazing, even changes speed limits exactly at the sign.
Overall I Recommend this product it is pretty awesome

(More customer reviews)I don't normally write reviews, but I decided I should for this product since there aren't many and I think the manufacturer deserves credit. I've used Power Acoustik amps and speakers before and liked them a lot. The company produces quality products but gets non-name-brand prices. So I wasn't too scared rolling the dice on this unit. I've been using it for a half a year now and it hasn't disappointed.
Sound is just fine. I doubt its audiophile quality, but it will stand with a good portion of the Sonys and the Pioneers. My one gripe there is that it doesn't seem to filter the low pass signals out of the main channels if you tell it to output to the sub channel, but this is a relatively minor problem and if you're not using a sub, you won't even care. The volume is sufficient.
Menu/control system is pretty good. You get some geek cred for having a touch screen and the basic functions are as you would expect. The external controls on the faceplate are a little weird. I definitely would have made the source easier to change than scrolling through by tapping the power button (I've never accidentally shut it off though--it's just you would think this would get its own button). I do like having the call pick-up and disconnect buttons that you can use when the faceplate is down.
iPod control is weird and I honestly don't use it. It's 100x easier to navigate your songs on the iPod itself. But I don't have use the custom ipod input because the basic audio input off a headphone jack is all i need there anyway and it lets me set my iPod in the console right side up. I suppose if I got into video on my ipod I'd give the ipod control another try, but it doesn't really worry me.
The Bluetooth handsfree option works fairly well. When someone calls you, no matter what screen you are in, it mutes your music, comes up with who it is and lets you choose to answer. It will also dial out strait from the head unit and interface with your phone's phonebook. It had troubles interfacing with mine. I actually prefer to just make the call from the phone and then the head unit takes over. I'm still out on whether I find the audio quality acceptable. In town its fine, but at highway speeds I think it picks up too much noise. Still, it's definitely usable.
Movies are pretty good. They can be a little washed out in the day depending on where the sun is etc., but generally the picture is great. I also like that it's not just a DVD player but a divx/xvid player and can use SD and USB storage devices. I haven't really used it, but I like knowing its there. If I did want to watch movies etc, I'd definately be using more the xvid/divx stuff than off the ipod. My one grip is that you have to use the remote for some of the navigation of the movie menus. I wish this was all touch screen, but you don't need it that often.
Navigation is the killer app for me. I just love it. It's also the part that I was most ambivalent about since there were no reviews of it. Well I'm glad I took the plunge. It's $200 extra, but well worth it. It's well programmed, you won't have a problem switching from a Garmin or a TomTom. It finds the satellites a lot quicker than my Garmin too, and I assume (though I don't have many tall buildings or mountains around me that it will hold on signal better there as well. And I have the antenna buried behind my glovebox. I imagine if I gave it more prominent positioning, the signal would be even better. The maps seem to be better than my garmin: it has less unnamed streets in my experience. And the fact that it's built into your dash and you don't have to sucker it onto your windshield is great. I'm really interested if anyone knows about software updates for it (just because I'm geeky that way). The website it points to doesn't seem to exist. You can quickly switch between your nav screen and your audio screens. You can continue listening to your source audio while in the nav screen and you can continue to get audio nav directions when off of the nav screen.
The security feature sort of scares me. The removable part isn't all that noticable when it's removed. It doesn't seem like much of a deterrent, which is all that really matters. I once had a head unit with top of the line smart card security. Well, it was stolen even though the card was out. All the thieves got was a dead stereo, but that didn't help me any. Anyways, this unit is so reasonably priced that I think the risk is worth it.
So all and all: everything is a little rough around the edges, it seems like it was designed a little hastily--maybe by the engineers, but it's feature-rich and most of the features work well. And if you tried to get anything similar from a big name you'd easilty be paying twice as much, which makes this a great buy.

(More customer reviews)I received this item quickly and packed very well. The unit itself is nice looking and fit in my 2006 F-150 nicely. It is important to get the wiring harness adapter and installation kit. I was able to get my steering wheel inputs to work with the PAC SWIJACK Steering Wheel Remote Interface unit sold here on Amazon. I read mixed reviews on the steering wheel interface but I got mine to work.
The GUI is easy to use but it is not intuitive.
The Bluetooth found and downloaded my address book from my iPhone with no trouble. The built-in microphone is not the best. I suspect that it is because you are so far away from it. Beware that only one speaker (you can chose front right or left) will produce the sound from your caller. One nice thing is that you can adjust the volume for calls; it remembers that setting and does not affect the volume from the rest of the audio sources. In other words, if I am listening to music at volume level of 10, then raise the volume to 35 during a call and return to music the volume will go back to 10 for the music. The next and any call after will remain on volume level 35.
Playing Ipod tunes is awful on this unit. The library layout is not as good as the iPod/iPhone. I looked up songs by artist and found that some of the albums are missing. I can find them if I switch to locating by album but this should not happen. On several occasions while listening to music from my iPhone and then received a call, the music was still heard (although at a low level). Another bad thing is that if you have the iPod/iPhone hooked up to the unit before you power up the audio does not come through. I have to disconnect, reconnect, wait for the unit to "see" it then the audio will come through.
Playing CDs and DVDs is easy and sound great.
Other than playing music from my iPhone, I am pleased with this unit. I had the high end factory Audiophile in my vehicle before this unit. The factory unit was good, but I do notice a difference in sound quality with this unit.
I have come back to this review after I have had the unit for awhile now. I have given it one less star. I pursched the Sat radio adapter for it and it is driving me crazy. The problem is the software in the head unit. It will not remember the last station you were on once you turn the system off. This means everytime I listen to sat radio, I have to select the channel I want. I say the problem is the head unit because I was finally able to get someone from Clarion to look into the problem. After weeks of researching the issue, they called me and told me that I need to remove the unit and send it back to Clarion for a software update. They told me they would email the RMA number and address to send it to. Problem is not only having my heaad unit gone for 6 weeks, Clarion has not sent me the RMA and location to send it to. That was 2 months ago....

Clarion NX409 6.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

(More customer reviews)I debated buying this NX409 but couldn't resist the price/feature list. While it's loaded with about every feature you could want not all of them work or don't work the way they should.
Navigation:
The GPS doesn't update fast enough so that the vehicle position indicator is not correctly displayed on the map relative to the cross streets especially at speed. The turn by turn voice guidance sometimes says to turn right when you actually are turning left. Many of the POI's are not accurate both for location on the map and also that some don't exist. If you can get beyond the robotic tone and poor text to speech pronunciation...the voice guidance also truncates some road names. Two of the features listed in the GPS menu don't work at all (like the alert tone option when you are approaching your turn). This may be a software bug as they won't even stay selected.
Sirius Radio:
Mostly works well except way too often you'll power the unit up and all the presets you spent time getting just the way you want are gone. That gets old after about the 5th time.
Ipod:
I plugged in my Shuffle to the USB port and it says "unrecognized file format". So I thought I'd check that it's on the list of supported Ipods on the Clarion site. Click on Ipod compatability list and gee..."page not found". At least there's some synergy between their products and the web site.
Other:
The Bluetooth BLT 370 option is a waste of money. Way too often when you start the car it will lock up the radio with a "phone in use" displayed( even when there is no cell phone within a mile of the vehicle)...you then have to shut off the ignition and open the door to get it to power down then restart the car. It sync's up with the phone great but everyone says I sound like I'm calling from the Mariana trench.
The clock setting can only be set manually. When you select your correct time zone and DST to sync the time using the GPS it's off by two hours.
Last but not least Clarion's support both on the web site and by phone is a waste of time.
On a positive note the quality of the audio is very good as is the DVD display.

I don't like those bluetooths that go in your ear so I was looking for something easier to use while driving. Easy to install, easy to link, good reception, the microphone picks up your conversation effortlessly, people that you're talking to sound clear over the stereo speakers and the switch provided to take calls is easy to use. Once linked, simply start the car and turn on the stereo, the phone and bluetooth link automatically and unlink when you turn the car off. I put this in my 1969 VW Beetle and was able to have a clear, uninterrupted conversation with a friend while traveling 60 mph with the windows down. I remarked to him that our conversation was almost like having him in the backseat of the car because of its effortless nature. Awesome Product!
