The display is easy-to-read, it has a built-in clip for easy mounting on your person, and it is one of the very few players that still supports the Mass Storage Device protocol, meaning that you can drag-and-drop files on it as though it was a little hard drive (my favorite part, as I can't stand most of the sync programs).
Sound quality is good, even with the included headphones, and the controls are intuitive. The only real drawback that I have found is that the battery life is not what was advertised. I tend to get three to four hours before it needs to be recharged; less if I have it plugged into the car stereo.

(More customer reviews)I've never written a review on Amazon before, but I like this unit so much that I thought I'd capture a few points that I think make this player a great choice:
1.) Currently an excellent $/GB value.
2.) Build quality is great (solid metal backplane). Screen will scratch, but one of the many available screen protectors will address this problem.
3.) User interface is well-deigned. I'm a fairly big guy (6'1") with large hands, but I have no problems operating the 4 buttons arranged around the scroll wheel. I was apprehensive about the scroll wheel, but it works great for me. The fact that it - unlike the iPod wheel - is raised a bit (i.e., has a positive profile) makes it easy to locate with your thumb when the player is out of view.
4.) Battery life is excellent; I've never run the unit to full discharge, but with heavy use on trans-pacific flights I've never gotten close to battery-empty status, so the stated 20 hrs. seems very realistic.(Remember that turning the brightness down will do wonders for battery life...)
5.) My player is loaded to capacity, and it takes apx. 10-15 sec. for booting, no more.
6.) Sandisk phone customer service has been more than satisfactory on two occasions (wait time was quite long but the actual service was very good).

Having witnessed the phenomenon in others, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one (a psychologist could explain it better, but it probably stems from our post-toddler, invisible friend/stuffed animal days, but no matter). So if this little MP3 player could speak, I reckon it would probably say something like, "Hi there! I know I'm not as full-blooded as an iPod Touch or as sleekly designed as an iPod Nano, but I'll work real hard to make you happy. Honest!"
First, a bit of history: I've owned iPods since late 2003 when I bought a spanking new 15 GB third generation iPod. Back then, smart phones had yet to come of age and if you wanted a high-capacity MP3 player, Apple were just about the only game in town. It helped matters immensely that my iPod was so well constructed since I used it day in, day out for five years until it finally died and I replaced it with a fourth generation iPod Nano. That Nano sure *seemed* solid enough (what with its sleek, anodized aluminum body and all) but a mere year-and-a-half later it fell apart faster than Joan Crawford in a wire hanger factory (see "Mommie Dearest" for an explanation of that analogy). With hopes held high for an amazing sixth generation Nano, I balked at the rather stripped-down feature set and the tiny, nigh-unusable touch screen.
So, off a-shopping I did go.
Since Sony didn't appear to make a Mac-friendly Walkman, I opted to punt, snapping up the newly released Sansa Fuze+ (black, 8BG capacity). I'd known about -- and respected -- Sansa players for years as affordable and worthy iPod competitors, so this seemed the best available option. Whether consciously or not, SanDisk are filling a huge void in the marketplace right now caused by the absence of last year's multi-purpose fifth generation Nano (and as a student, I really, really needed its now long-gone voice recorder feature badly).
To define the negatives of this particular player: as many reviewers have pointed out, the Fuze+'s touch-sensitive interface can be a bit unresponsive at times and over-responsive at others. The GUI isn't anywhere near as intuitive as anything Apple could have designed. Furthermore, the industrial design is rather plain and the plastic is easily scratched (HINT: rub any scratches that appear on plastic with Brasso and a clean, lint-free cloth; after several minutes, it clears them right up -- promise!). That said...
Onto the positives: the sound quality from this thing is amazing -- rich and full! I've run battery tests only to have my jaw hit the floor when power usage on my unit clocked in at a WHOPPING 53 hours for 128 kbps MP3s and 30 hours for 256 kbps AAC files. This in itself is an astonishing discovery, particularly having come from the notoriously power-hungry iPod realm. This little fellow plays video beautifully, although the screen's visual "sweet spot" is at a slightly off-centre angle when watching a movie in Landscape mode. Also, it's got a voice recorder -- a good one -- that uses the unit's incredibly wee, shockingly responsive built-in microphone. While the Fuze+ won't win any beauty contests, it is enough for me to say that it *is* solidly constructed, having already dropped it several times without so much as scratching it (Brasso time!).
I give this player a solid recommendation -- especially (way) over the current iPod Nano -- keeping in mind that it is still quite new and there *are* flaws. However, SanDisk seems to really care about their customers, listening to their concerns and working hard to iron out the kinks. Their Website support forums are a good place to go for advice, especially considering that by buying any new first-generation product, you're essentially signing up to be a Beta tester.
It just comes with the territory, folks.

(More customer reviews)About three years ago I had purchased a Sandisk Sansa m230 Mp3 player (the blue 512 MB one). I loved the little gadget, until it was in a horrible accident involving a heavy book bag and the floor. Amazingly the player still worked, but the screen was scattered. So I used the device for the past year a bit messed up, then I saw that Sansa was coming out with the Fuze in March. I new that if my little mp3 player could be smashed by a 20 lb. book bag and still work, the Fuze would have to be wonderful.
I never even considered an iPod. They are not worth the money and friends have had way to much trouble with the devices for me to begin to think about buying one. The Fuze has all the abilities of videos, radio, pictures, music (of course), and so much more. And their prices for the about of memory that you get is amazing. Who ever uses 80 GB of memory anyway? If you do or have, I applaud your unimaginable music library.
Since I was going away to college, I decided to spend a bit of my graduation party money on one, I bought a 4 GB Pink Fuze. When it arrived, I have to admit I was surprised how small it really was. But it fit perfectly in your hand, so the smallness doesn't really affect anything. The screen is unbelievably bright. I have it set to the lowest brightness and still can see things perfectly fine in complete darkness. The turn wheel glides smoothly, and is easy to select the songs you want. The sound is wonderful also. The headphones that come with the Fuze fit so nicely and sound terrific. I wish I could buy just those!
I will admit that the screen does scratch a bit easy. I was cleaning it, something which I obsess over a bit, with an eye glass cleaning cloth and little scratches appeared when I was finished. So it might be a good idea to invest in a hard case that covers the screen or those screen protectors that companies make for GameBoys or something like that.
You should also know that you must convert videos and pictures using a download found on the sansa fuze forum. It takes a little while to download, but the conversions don't take all that long to finish. It also puts them right to the Fuze. There is also a firmware download on the Fuze forum that might be a good idea to download. It doesn't take very long either.
I love my Fuze and wish I would have bought one sooner. You can't bet the price for the memory and the quality of the product. Sansa put that little bit of effort into their products that make them extra special. For example the silicon like back on the Fuze to help the device not slide. It feels neat too. If you are thinking of buying one, DO IT! You won't regret it! They are awesome!

SanDisk Sansa Clip 2 GB MP3 Player (Pink) Review

(More customer reviews)BACKGROUND: I was in the market for a small MP3 player with primary usage at the gym. I was looking for a rechargeable unit as my previous player ate AAA batteries about every week or so. I considered three options of which the Sansa Clip was one of them. I eliminated the iPod Shuffle due to its cost and lack of display. The other primary contender was the Creative Zen Stone Plus (I rejected the non-Plus model due it its lack of display). I will reference how the Sansa Clip won out throughout the rest of the review.
SET UP: The Sansa Clip is about as simple as it gets in this area. It requires no additional software installation. My home system runs XP SP2 with Windows Media Player 11. When I plugged the player in to charge, it was detected and recognized automatically. I told windows to "Take No Action" as the default behavior when the device connects. This allows me to maintain complete control over the syncing process. My unit charged in about an hour.
MUSIC TRANSFER: You have the option of using simple drag and drop of MP3 files to the device as you would a USB flash drive. However, using Windows Media Player allows you the more advanced feature of playlists. Since I primarily use my MP3 player at the gym, I created multiple playlists for warm up, workout, and cool down. The workout lists are about 90 minutes while the others about 20 minutes. I really liked that I was able to create multiples of each for variety. Right now I have three of each with about 1.5 Gb still remaining to use as I please. Using Windows Media Player, you can sync albums, songs, or playlists as you would with any other device. The Sansa Clip fully supports all of these options so it is a nice low effort, highly functional set up.
SOUND QUALITY: This is an area where the Sansa Clip is pretty impressive. I previously had the Sansa M230, and I can tell a significant difference in sound quality. I am able to hear a lot more detail in the higher ranges (such as high hat cymbals). I am using the headphones that came with the unit, but I would image that higher quality headphones would sound even better. The player also has a series of preset equalizer settings for different music styles as well as one that you can customize.
DISPLAY: This is a distinguisher between the Clip and the Zen Stone Plus. The display is larger and easier to read. The mix of blue and yellow against the black background is also pleasant.
NAVIGATION: The Clip has a normal four button dial that is common to most small MP3 players. With the crisp, clear display it is easy to move around and select music by artist, album, song, or playlist. The only thing that I have noticed that doesn't work quite the way I would like is that if you navigate away from the song that is playing there doesn't seem to be a way to get back to it to see the details of what's playing. This is pretty minor, though, because I do not regularly navigate away from the song that is playing.
FM RADIO: This is about what you would expect from a unit with no external antenna. Strong signals come in clearly, but it is not going to match what you can pick up on your car stereo. This is a nice to have feature for me so it is plenty adequate.
OPTIONS: As I mentioned previously, my primary usage comes at the gym. I had used the song timer to measure the time between reps while lifting weights on my M230. However, the Clip has a power saving feature that shuts off the display after 15 seconds by default. However, you can change this to 30, 45, 60, or 90 seconds which should cover your needs. After adjusting mine, I wake up the display after completing a set. When the display shuts off, it's time for the next set.
USE ON THE GO: This is the other area where the Clip separates itself from the Zen Stone Plus. You can clip the player to your clothes or an arm strap (I use the one that came with my M230). The Zen Stone Plus requires purchase of a separate armband accessory for an additional $15.
COST: At base price, the Zen Stone Plus and Sansa Clip are a push. However if you factor in another $15 for an armband you have a clear winner given the other advantages.
CONCLUSION: The Sansa Clip is now the leader in 2 Gb small MP3 players. Give it a spin and you won't be disappointed.

Maximo FM Transmitter and Car Charger for Sansa MP3 Players Review

(More customer reviews)* First off, let me say I am not an "audiophile", nor am I an MP3 junkie, so keep that in mind. This unit is used in my 1997 Ford Ranger STX with it's original so-so stereo:
* The first one that I ordered didn't work and returned it via Amazon's great return method. It is the best hands down for Amazon stocked (not third party) orders.
* The second unit was received quickly & works very good with a couple of comments. Thankfully it has a very wide frequency range because the lower frequencies have a great deal of interference in the Phoenix area. The single quiet "spot" near the higher end of the spectrum is MUCH better with almost no static. Almost. At higher volumes (think booming Rock 'n Roll) it's there alright, but not too bad. The other thing that I hadn't considered much prior to ordering is that the wire leading to the Sansa is a bit funky as it seems to be pretty much all over the place. In retrospect I wish this unit had a plug-in cradle built into it instead of the long wire. But the wire is probably better for the co-pilot to manage if you have one (I don't). The Sansa volume needs to be set to high & around 70-75% before pluging it into the transmitter. Once plugged in you can't change the Sansa volume and it will sound weak through the car/truck stereo if you have it too low before plugging in.
* Overall a good performer so far.

Creative Labs NOMAD II Digital Audio Player Review

(More customer reviews)Before I bought the NOMAD II, I read a lot of reviews from Amazon. I saw there were a few downsides to this product, but I took my chances anyway and I do not regret it at all. I believe this product to be the best mp3 player out in the market now.
I admit, I don't know much about mp3 players (this being my first one), but compared to the reviews of the other top selling players, the NOMAD didn't really have much drastic flaws to it.
I'm not going to get all technical now, except the fact that NOMAD can support other future formats like WMA, and most of the other top-selling ones do not.
OKay...NOMAD has a limited memory of 64MB. Most of the others do too. Yeah, there are some that hold 96MB now, but who knows...wait a few years and it'll probably be a couple Gigabytes...that is, if future formats of music files do not make mp3's obsolete...or if you really want to wait that long for it to come out. When you think about it, it's not really all that bad. Of course, people would like the player to hold infinite amount of music... 64MB is just not enough, I know. I'd love it so much if one Smartmedia card could hold 100 songs compared to 12-15...I also wished CD's and tapes can hold that much at one time, too. Speaking of that, hey...can tapes zip from one track to another? Does it give CD quality sounds like the mp3 players do? Can tapes hold more than 20-30 songs averaging 5 minutes a piece? And CD's? Burn as many mixed song CD's you'd like, but you can only do them once on each CD, that is, if you do not mess it up in the process...and they take a lot of time. Plus, you can't hold that many songs in there either. Basically, you got the same limits as you always had with portable music players with the exception of a lot of extra convenience involved. Believe me, this little gadget is very convenient. It's light as a feather. It won't skip. It won't "eat the tape", wear down the motor, wear down any heads (tape heads),...no need to clean the heads or lenses since there are no moving parts. The mp3 player isn't fragile like CD players. You bump into someone with your CD player in your backpack, there's a pretty good chance your CD player will be...killed. With this unit, you don't need a backpack. Just slip it into your front pocket. Run into anyone you want and I'll guarantee there'll be no damage to your unit...unless the person you ran into beats you up first and punches you in the chest, crushing it. I could go on forever with this but I must point out some other "downsides" to this unit.
I read somewhere that the FM radio wasn't that great on this. Works fine for me. I mean if I were in a basement with no windows, surely I'd get bad radio receptions. I'm not saying that the reviewer who wrote the complaint about bad reception lives in a basement...I'm just saying radio signals vary wherever you go or wherever you are. I get good reception where I'm at now, but if I move south of my neighborhood, I get static on my FM radio...as well as my cellular phone.

Several reviews below gave a low rating to the player's sound fidelity, but it sounds clear and rich to me on voice or music. My main for purpose for using it is voice Podcasts. I have been using my player for about three weeks.
There are two volume levels in the Settings. The highest volume in the default or low setting is not very high. This means any background noise can easily overshadow what is playing. Changing to the higher level is a distinct help when walking along the street or listening on an airliner.
Several previous reviewers also complained about short battery life. The AAA alkaline battery that came with the unit gave out before its listed time, but it may have been weak from sitting on a shelf. The battery meter in the display does not give any reliable clue as to when the battery will fail. Always carry a spare battery with you, especially if you are using rechargeable batteries. Otherwise, it seems to be a great little unit and I am looking forward to getting a lot of use from it.
The player is easy to use without installing the factory software. As long as "MTP" shows on the screen when connected by cable to the computer, just drag and drop files. It does not matter if files are in a folder or not. The player finds and plays them in alphabetical order. If properly shut down, it remembers where you stopped and begins there the next time the player is used. It will even save your place during a reasonably quick battery change. When a battery fails, the player starts again at the beginning of the file playing when the battery failed.
The PDF manual on the software disc is far more detailed than the printed quick start guide and is worth reading soon after your purchase.
It is not difficult to navigate the menu, but a little practice makes use of the controls much easier. The FM radio feature is nice to have.
The voice recorder works well. Files are stored in the Record folder in the unit's memory. You are supposed to be able to play them on the player, but I had to move them to my computer first. The files appear with a WAV extension on the player, but appear on the computer as MP3 files.The microphone does not produce a loud recording and must be held close to the mouth, making it easy to get a lisp on the recording.
The player will not accept an external memory card, but with 1 GB of internal memory, it is large enough to hold an entire MP3 audio Bible.

(More customer reviews)I've had the Connect for about a week now, and have now acquired a library of about 600 songs, about half of which I had never heard of before. I'm totally blown away by its paradigm-shifting technology.
With a WI-FI connection the Sansa Connect plays Internet radio, and if you like a song that is playing, you can download that track or album, as well as make a playlist from other songs that are similar in style. This is my favorite feature--it has introduced me to music that I would never have heard of otherwise, in genres ranging from Ambient House to Uber Indie. Before I go to sleep, I initiate the download process from the genres I like, and in the morning, I have a bunch of new tracks to listen to, which I can then play without having a WI-FI connection.
The sound quality is very good. I believe it encodes the tracks at 192K. Not as hi-fidelity as a vinyl encoded at 320K, but almost as good as a CD.
You can also recommend songs, and that will affect which songs get downloaded, as well as which songs it plays on the Internet Radio.
The user-interface is very intuitive. I can now almost operate the unit with my eyes closed.
My only complaint is that the headphone jack is right next to the USB port, at the bottom of the unit, instead of on the side.
Much of the pleasure from the unit comes the discovery of new music. If you are a "Life is the Journey, not the Destination" kind of person, then this player is definitely for you.
Here are a two features that would be nice to have:
1. download a specific song
2. playlist management: move and copy tracks to other playlists
The firmware will be automatically updated through the WI-FI connection, so hopefully they'll add these features shortly.

(More customer reviews)I recently bought this player. Both my wife and I have been in the market for new MP3 players and just haven't been interested in a hard drive based player, iPod or not. We don't need to carry that much music around and I like the non-moving flash thing a lot better. We mainly want to use a player for workouts and traveling. So far, I think it's an excellent player with some minor exceptions.
The player comes with a clear plastic snug carrying case that not only provides screen protection but also can be worn on a thin belt or on the provided stretchy armband. It also comes with the USB cable and headphones that are too short for my liking, but then maybe you don't want long cords when it's attached to your arm. It takes one AAA battery and I haven't done any form testing or anything, but my original battery has lasted several days now with several hours playtime each day. The battery meter is flipping between one bar and no bar so it is getting low. There is a quick start guide, but the manual is a 29 page PDF on the CD. The CD also has Musicmatch and 98SE drivers.
This player has been compared to the iRiver series of MP3 players, and I would have to agree they are very similar except that the iRiver takes a AA and is triangular while the SanDisk player takes the AAA and reminds me more of a thick cigarette lighter both in shape and size. I was also told the iRiver is bit pricier. I like the finish and look of the player, which shows through the case. The red and silver is very sharp and the whole look of the player is very clean. It has the USB port, which has a rubber door on one side of the player and the headset port, microphone and neck cord hole on the opposite side.
The actual operation of the player is also very good although it has a lot of features and functions that are only accessed by the joystick and three side buttons. With so many features, it takes a little bit getting used to navigating around the player and of course the manual does not go into great detail about the features, although it does have an exploded menu diagram which is nice. This is probably why I only gave it four stars. I might have actually done 4.5 stars if I could have, because once you have the chance to play around with things and read the manual it isn't a big deal.
There are three modes: player, FM radio and voice recorder. I am most impressed with the radio as this was a minor reason why I bought the player. The radio actually does a decent job of picking up the stations here in the Phoenix area and the reception and sound quality is fairly good. Considering how small the player is, I was surprised I am getting as good a sound as I am. The player will automatically scan available stations and add them to the presets and you can tune manually and add presets manually as well. You can also choose if you want mono or stereo mode, although I don't know why anyone would want mono, unless it saves on batteries. I don't see myself using the radio too often, but it's nice to know it's there if I needed it. I haven't really played around with the voice recorder either, but it records at 32kbs and 8Khz so not the greatest of quality. Again, voice recording is not the reason I purchased this for so not a big deal.
So, as far as the Audio Player mode, it is a great! A few minor quibbles, but for the most part, I think both my wife and I will be very happy with this player. I have uploaded mainly 192Kbs music files and 64kbs spoken word files and they all sound excellent. As a non-audiophile, the sound and volume are quite good for me. Maybe even better with a quality pair of headphones. I can't even get past 32 (of 40) on the volume scale before my ears are hurting so I know the volume should be just fine while working out at the gym. The display is blue backlit and somehow they manage to put a lot of info on the LCD without cluttering everything up. And supposedly,It does read the ID3 tags and displays them. I am not going into all of the features here, but it is packed with them: sleep, hold, repeat, shuffle, playback speed, A->B play, equalizer. One feature I will go into detail about is Resume. I am a big fan of the audio book and my previous MP3 player did not have resume so when I had a long file playing and I had to stop the player, it would not pick up where I stopped it but at the beginning of the file. Not this baby. It picks up right where it left off when you power it down. Whoo-hooo!! No more fast-forwarding to find my spot on an audio book!
The joystick on the player is a multi-function device that navigates the file browser and the menu system. This is the only part of the player I am not thrilled with. The file browser can be cumbersome to navigate with joystick and sometimes I end up hitting select or the wrong direction and end up a different place than I thought. The other thing that seems counter-intuitive to me is that rather than selecting a directory or file by pushing select, you need to select the file or directory by pushing right (or left, the display is rotatable). I keep forgetting this, and I end up back at the currently playing song. But other than that, I really can't complain about it. I can easily see folders and files, and files that are too long for the display scroll to the left to see the entire file name. These minor things are the other reason I did not give the player a full five stars. Just a matter of getting used to it and someone else might not even agree that it's a problem.
The joystick also is the way to get into the main menu of settings and functions: Audio, Display and System. From here you can customize just about anything on the player including: display orientation (useful for righties or lefties), backlight time, ID3 tag scroll, display info, auto power off, sleep timer, FM region, FM scan sensitivity, resume control and a ton more. You can see the memory usage, firmware and format the player as well. Full featured and well designed. The other three button, A>B, Rec, and Play/Stop/Power also do multiple functions depending upon if the player is playing and the mode it is in.
Windows 2K and XP both recognized the device as a USB drive no problem and I used both Media Player and drag/drop to add music to the player. Although I did notice today that if you build folders or add files via drag/drop, then Media player will not do anything with those particular files and you will have to change them via the directory listing in Windows. Haven't bothered with the included Musicmatch as my media is already set up in Media Player. According to the instructions it will play MP3, WMA and WMA DRM files. Voice recording is in ADPCM format.
Since this is to be my wife's player, the real test was if she was going to like it and at first look, her comment was ""Ooooh, look how cute!!" And she liked the weight of it as well. So, now I just have to instruct her on how to use it. I ordered the 512MB model for myself, which was probably a good move since both of us will have the same player and I can answer any questions she has since I will have the same way to do things. I highly recommend these players for anyone looking for a flash based player with all the basics of today's digital audio player and a few bonuses as well and a great price.

From a usability perspective, I think it rivals the iPod interface and provides more feedback. While I really love the device, there are some things that I wish were a little better.
Pros

- Very nice screen and just big enough that if you were stuck on a plane, watching a movie still is an enjoyable experience.
- Simple and very intuitive interface. I love the fact that the iPod-like wheel actually rotates.
- Expansion via MicroSD cards is a great feature. I was able to swap the MicroSD card between my BlackBerry and the Fuze and be able to share images, and music.
- The FM Radio and ability to record from it is one of the coolest features. There's something about the randomness about radio that I still really like. And the ability to record a song that I don't already have can save you some money.
- I haven't used the external mic yet, but I think that's a neat feature to have when you have a thought and want to record it. I can think of several times where I've had a thought and wasn't able to write it down.
Cons
----
- The most frustrating experience I've had with the Fuze is the ability to get Video transferred. I've tried multiple formats and have been very unsuccessful in finding the right format to use. This is the main reason I've not given it a full 5 star review. Of course it's ridiculous to think that this would be a 'Movie' player. However, I have some great concerts that I would love being able to watch as well as listen to. I'm not interested in watching a movie.
- The on/off switch is great if you want to make sure that you don't accidentially turn on/off. However, I think it's overly difficult. Especially if you have large fingers. I would have preferred to press the Play button for a couple of seconds.
- The device 'hiccups' when scrolling through music that has album art. For some reason, when you get to the list of albums, the select button doesn't work until the album art appears. Often requiring you to double-click. Not a big deal, unless you're quickly trying to find a song to add to the play list.
- Finally, the device is either too new or not popular enough to warrant accessories. I really want to buy a protective cover, but they don't exist. I've read that some people are using Nano covers, but they don't fit well enough. This is really bad if you want to use the Fuze while exercising or cutting the lawn.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Fuze to anyone looking for a low-cost small media device. The cons shouldn't sway you away from buying it, but they are good to know. I'll update my review when I figure out the right combination of video formats for the device.

(More customer reviews)What I really like about it is the size, capacity, and most of all price.
The codec support is about average, not great but it satisfies my needs as 99% of my music is encoded in mp3 format.
One of my dislikes is common among all sandisk mp3 players(and most other players) is that the charging/syncing port is proprietary. Not a big issue, mini-usb would have been nice though.
Video playback was smooth(used a mp4 350MB recorded tv show) no sync problems between the audio/video and no stuttering. Too small to really be considered for video playback though.
Picture viewing is about the same as video and by that I mean it works great and the pictures look ok but the screen is so small it is not practical to show off pics with it.
Voice recording works well, don't have to hold it directly to my face to clearly record sounds...although I'm not sure what this can be used for but it is there and works well.
The radio works great, easy station browsing, easy to add stations to presets, and reception is very clear.
The sound is very accurately produced at all ranges. The included headphones fit well and sound good. The volume goes up much higher than I could ever think I would need it. For those of you who are runners, I use the earphones that come with it and they direct the sound very well into my ears so I do not have to make it too loud and can still hear some of the environmental sounds: wind noise is hardly noticeable.
The screen is easy to see in all light conditions, bright, and easy to read.
The build quality feels great. It has generous weight to it, light enough to take running and not really notice it but heavy enough to give it a solid feel. The front of the device is a bit shiny and does tend to attract fingerprints easily but not scratches so far.
Expansion port works great, currently using a 4GB microsdhc to shuttle podcasts/audiobooks between it my pc.
Navigation is a breeze and the menus are very intuitive, the scroll wheel/buttons are easy to find and press even with the player not in sight.
Syncing I very easy to do without the need for bloated software. You can add media to it via a file explorer(drag & drop) or one of several media players like WMP, winamp, and a variety of others. The datbase is auto-updating and works flawlessly. I have seen a few reviews that say the database refresh takes a while. With a completely full internal memory and half full 4gb card my refreshes only take 15-30 seconds.
A few final notes. The boot-up is about 3-5 seconds from off to playing music after pressing the power button. It will resume the music exactly where you left it when turning it off. Actual usable memory is about 7.8 GB. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars, best on the market right now but not perfect of course.
UPDATE: 2 new "cons" I have come across. Technically the device is performing as intended but I am hoping for a firmware update to "resolve" these.
1. When scrolling, the speed of scrolling does not increase. Basically takes forever if the song you want is in the second half of the alphabet. This will probably be changed in the next firmware update though.
2. The podcasts are sorted by most recent first. This kind of makes since so you dont have to scroll to the bottom to listen to the newest one but it also causes a problem if you are trying to listen to a series in order and it starts playing through them backwards. :( Probably no "fix" for this issue although being able to choose how it is sorted would be great.

I really liked what I heard about this player for audiobooks until I saw the review that said that it does not bookmark. I thought so, too, but I discovered all you have to do is press the Play button and it brings you back to where you left it. (see details below of the steps, but they are
1. Turn off while playing
2. Turn on.
3. Press play. Starts where you left off.
Sound
The sound is beautiful. It is the only flash drive player I have found that handles Audible format 4 which is the highest and is comparable to MP3. The next lower is format 3 and is comparable to FM radio. Format 3 is the standard for most. I tried it with NetLibrary audiobooks which is available from a number of public libraries. I had the same problems with the Sansa that I have had with the Creative Muvo (see below) so I think it is the NetLibrary format.
Volume Knob
I did not find the volume knob hard to use when it was out of the case. I have not tried it in the case.
Case
There is a trick to get the player out of the case. It goes into the case top first so the top of the player is at the top of the case. All you have to do is press with a little pressure on the the top of the case - toward the bottom of th case - to ease it out of the bottom of the case.
Display
The elapsed and remaining time digits are WAY, WAY too small.

Additional information on the bookmark. I am beginning to suspect that there are different versions of the firmware on different ones.
Works with Audible Audiobooks
Here is what I am able to do consistently. I have tried in different chapters of a book and in different books.
While listening to an Audible book.
It is playing...
1. Hold the side button until it shuts down ...it will shut down when you hold down the side button for 5 seconds - it counts down with squares on the screen and then when you let up, it shuts off.
2. Press the same button to turn it on.It is now NOT playing, but it DOES show the title of the book and its chapter on the screen.
3. I press Play and it starts exactly where it left off.
Bookmarking Does Not Work with Music
I WAS NOT able to get this or any other form of bookmarks to work with music. This is definitely a screw-up.
Problems Using NetLibrary audiobooks.
I have problems with NetLibrary audiobooks with my Creative Muvo MP3 players as well. These are being used by several public libraries, but not all players - iPods don't work at all - work with their files. The problem I have seen is that files longer than about two hours do not show a longer length or they show as 00:00 in the elapsed time.
Cable Not Proprietary
Another point was made that the cable is "proprietary." The cable is not proprietary. It is a USB 2.0 A-Mini 5-Pin B cable. I didn't think it was proprietary because my Creative n200 has the same cable. To be sure, I bought two different makes and designs (one regular, one retractable) from Radio Shack tonight. They worked with no problems with the Sansa e140.
Does NOT take three to four minutes to start up with card. I have an e140 with a one Gig SD card. I timed it. It takes 10 SECONDS!

(More customer reviews)I bought a c250 a couple of years ago and like it for it's small size, clear FM radio reception, user replaceable battery, Micro SD expansion slot and good sound (probably the only player that comes with decent ear buds). I recently bought a pink (actually closer to rose color) c250 for my wife and she loves it! The 'pink' has a slightly modified interface that works a bit better for file transfers than my old one. (I use the Rhapsody music service software for loading the Sansa.) I've had no problems with either player although the interface is a little confusing at first, so you may want to resort to reading the manual before you start. Negatives: The screen is not bright enough to read in sunlight, there is no clock function and you can't bookmark your place in a file if you switch to another program. If you want those features, you'll have to pay more. Amazon's price on the 'pink' was excellent!

(More customer reviews)I bought a black c240 over a year ago and it's still working perfectly. I take it hiking and when I go to the beach, etc. small enough to put in my pocket. Sound is great and it's easy to load up hundreds of MP3's using Windows MediaPlayer, or to sync the player to new additions to a favorites list in MediaPlayer. I really like the Sansa, it's smaller, less complicated and sounds as good as the Apple competition that I considered. I bought a red Sansa c240 for my wife, but she has arthritis and has trouble using it, so am selling it. It's has very little use.
