(More customer reviews)The WM-FX290 plays tapes clearly without the warbly speed changes (known as "wow and flutter") that render piano music unbearable. At this price point, competency is the key; anything better is icing on the cake.
These days, people shopping for a cassette Walkman probably listen to audiobooks or have a boxful of old tapes they think they'll get around to playing. Neither customer likely expects Dolby noise reduction or the ability to play CrO2 or metal tapes. Also, in case you were planning to dictate notes to self, note now that this unit does NOT record.
The pleasant surprise is what you DON'T expect to find at this price: Attractive styling, digital tuning with presets, comfortable headphones, exceptional battery life (from one AA battery!), and a "hold" button that prevents unintended station changes when the unit is stuffed in a pocket.
What isn't so hot? Well, weather band has weak reception even in areas with usable signal, the "bass boost" function produces a sonic mudslide that will alarm even "boom car" afficionados, and the nearly opaque clamshell makes you eject to read the tape label or see how much tape remains on a side (yikes).
At this humble price point, the presence of a few nice touches -- and lack of jarring penalties -- spells an easy five stars.

Sony SRF-M37V FM/AM/Weather/TV Radio Walkman with 25 Memory Presets Review

(More customer reviews)I've had trouble finding a Walkman type radio that works well around Manhattan - FM signal overload and multipath causes noisy reception on most radios in New York City.
The Sony SRF-M37V is the best one I've found so far. It performs better than Sony's previous SRF-M35 model, and it also works better than models I tried from Panasonic and Sangean. While it isn't perfect, the SRF-M37V has a lot less multipath and signal-overload noise than those other models. The local-distant switch does a decent job of cutting down on this kind of interference in the city without killing the stereo separation, and it works much better than the same switch did on the SRF-M35. In "distant" mode, this radio has very good FM sensitivity. However, I'm not able to pull in a couple of my favorite low-powered out-of-town & college stations because those frequencies get overpowered by nearby local signals. I've had the same problem with every other Walkman-type radio I've tried though, so it's not just a fault of this one.
The AM section seems to have good sensitivity too, but the sound quality isn't as crisp as other models, including the SRF-M35. The treble is rolled off so sharply that it sounds rather muffled and you can't hear "S" sounds in normal speech. I know audio quality isn't a priority for AM radio but I've still heard better than this.
Reception on the TV and weather bands seems good, although the audio level is a little low on both. I have to turn up the volume nearly all the way to get a normal listening level.
Overall fidelity is very good at low volume but you can't turn it up very loud before it starts to distort. I expect this is because it runs on a single AAA battery so the headphone amp is probably underpowered. Stereo separation is great. There seems to be a bit of bass boost built in, which is not switchable, so the bass is the first thing to distort at higher volume levels. The supplied headphones sound like typical cheap Walkman phones, and aren't as good as the ones that came with the SRF-M35. This radio will sound much better if you get some better headphones.
There is a battery status indicator, which is useful. There is also a clock but the time won't show in the display unless you turn the radio off.
The bottom line is this is a very good radio. It's small, the presets make it easy to tune, and the TV and weather bands are fun to have. If all you need is a Walkman that does a good job at picking up radio I don't think you'll beat this one, especially for the price.

(More customer reviews)This is the same item as the FX-290, now with a W added. Only difference is the absence of the TV audio band, which will be irrelevent next February. I ve had three of these walkmans in the past couple of years. One shattered upon impact to the ground. I didn't have the case on it, and with the other two the fast forward button, which I use quite a bit fell off.
That being said, this is probably the greatest walkman I ve owned. The radio cassette player is a dying breed and I m glad to see Sony put out a new version of an old favorite. With 35 hours on one AA battery, this is one of the great values. I still have hundreds of cassette tapes that I have taped from XM the last couple of years, and I still take my walks listening to those. Transferring to a CD is an option,but its too much of a bother. With the belt clip its so easy to just walk listening to a cassette, even though the sound quality is not as good as a CD,but it fits my purposes fine.
With AM and FM and all the presets, and a weather band this is a nice value for $30 and free shipping. I m glad I still have my other two units without the fast forward button. This is becoming a relic, and I want to make sure I have this walkman for some time to come. No MP3 for me. I m satisfied with this unit.

Sony WMFS593 Sports Walkman Review

(More customer reviews)I loved my 499 model (sold here). It had mechanical play/ff/rev buttons. This model has a knob the goes in 4 directions and down. I hate it. It is too sensitive to touch (I often hit it by accident and send the tape back or forward :( ), and is difficult to use without looking as the orientation is a bit offset. Also the engaging head is electronic and takes about 2 seconds to change from ff/rev to play. For me, it takes too long while scanning stop and go... (I tend to forward through material - like commercials taped from radio). Anyway, it makes for poor scanning speed and if you pass your point of interest, more pain to back up a bit. I have just ordered another 499 model and will get rid of this one. One last negative: The headphone jack is at the bottom! and with it clipped to a belt makes for barely any slack in the (supplied!) headphone cord! Bending a little to the side will exhaust the length... I am 5-11 and so not extremely tall. This unit is a real disappointment. Oh yeah, the buttons are SUPER stiff for the radio/menu/tuning. I understand being new, but it just is one more downer for this miss of a design.

But, the only cassette recorder I could find when I went to replace it was this Coby CX-49. Halfway through a book and desperate to keep going, I bought it. The radio never gets in my favorite station without static (the old half-dead Sony is about a billion times clearer) and after owning the Coby for six days, I was sitting still in a chair when suddenly the tape starts distorting - turns out that, despite fresh batteries, one of the spindles has stopped turning. And it never started again. Don't waste your money like I wasted mine. I am now scouring the web for a stash of Sony Walkman cassette players I can buy up and hoard, because Coby is no substitute.

The piece works well with the chat now communicators but it makes your ear feel and sometimes you hear funny afterwards for about three minutes.

(More customer reviews)I've used just about every MP3 player there is and this one is right there with the best of them. It's small light and extremely easy to use. You don't need ANY software to upload songs to it. The device shows up like a drive on your PC. You have the option of using Windows Media Player 11 to upload songs, but I'd rather just drag and drop songs or use my Napster subscription to upload songs from Napster's huge library. I thought 2GB wouldn't be enough but it is so easy to upload songs when my mood changes that it's never been an issue for me. If you like to watch movies then you may want to go with the larger 4GB (NWZS616) or 8GB (NWZS618) versions of this model since a typical movie takes up ~700K memory after you compress it to QVGA. If you want a larger screen size then you can get the NWZA815. That model is basically the same player with a larger screen. It also has a heavier metal shell, but it does not have an FM tuner like the NWZS615, and I wanted the FM tuner. I typically use my player in shuffle mode in my car and if I don't want to hear a song, it is a breeze to reach down and click just to the right of the center button to skip to the next song. I honestly can't see how anyone would be disappointed with this player especially when you consider the great price.

Sony 8 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)This MP3 player is amazing. I've been searching for a replacement for my Nano who's battery only lasts about 1 hour per charge these days. I think this is a much superior product in many ways.
First off, the Pros:
1. Battery life. So far, I've been playing video and MP3s on one charge about 9 hours and the battery light is still 1/2 full. The statistics claim 10 hours of video and 30+ hours of MP3 songs. I don't know if I'll get that much, but so far I'm very happy.
2. My favorite feature of this player is that it does not rely on ID3 tags in order to catalog your music. The majority of my MP3 collection is several years old and do not have ID3 tags embedded in the file. My nano would not recognize these songs, but this player just plays based on files and folders. Adding music requires no 3rd party software, just a simple drag and drop in Windows Explorer. Couldn't be easier and I love it this way.
3. Sound quality is superb. There is a 5 band EQ, plus "clear bass" enhancement that really brings out the lows in
songs. The EQ really lets me customize my music to my liking. The sound quality is better than any MP3 player I've ever heard. Sony hit a home run on this player!
4. The video feature is outstanding. 2.4" LCD screen is bright and colorful. I didn't buy it for the video capability, but it's surely a cool bonus.
5. Navigation is a cinch. I didn't even need to read through the instructions and I was able to navigate all the menus in a few short minutes. The buttons on the unit are firm and responsive, and feel like they'll hold up for years. The volume and hold buttons are on the side of the unit and are easy to access.
6. The player will bookmark your movie file for you. So if you stop a movie and switch over to playing MP3, and then later on want to continue you movie, it will start up where you left off. Nice feature. And when the unit is powered off, and then powered back on, it remembers where you were in your last MP3 song (I've read that some Sony units won't do this, but this one does).
Cons:
1. The file transfer speed seems pretty slow to me given it's USB 2.0. Takes about 3 minutes to transfer a 500MB movie. About 50 seconds to transfer a standard MP3 album. Not a huge deal, but my Nano was much quicker.
2. When you unplug the player from the USB cable, and have hundreds of files on it like I currently have, it has to build the library, which can take up to 30 seconds, before you can access it. Again, a minor quirk, but nothing is perfect!
3. No FM radio, no recorder. I can live without these features, but they may be more important to other people. If keeping these features off the unit allows for more battery space, that's fine with me!
All in all, I'd highly recommend this player to anyone looking for a high quality, great sounding MP3 player that does not require special software (re: iTunes) to run.

I've never written an online review before but his radio is great and is worth the trouble.
I'm a Ham Operator and I restore tube radios for a hobby so I've spent a few hours listening to DX, I know crap, I know hype, and I know a miracle when I trip over one. I started looking around for a pocket radio to keep in my truck because sometimes I would be caught working away from the shop for hours without any news or music. If you're a radio nut you can guess what happened next. A month later, probably twenty hours online and more than a hundred bucks worth of pocket radios and I wasn't happy. I'd had fun and now had some radios handy around the house for "adequate" use (radios & led flashlights, can't have enough!). Even though I had run across this radio online and in reviews I didn't put it on my list of probables, It was just a $10.00 radio and I was limiting myself to vintage radios with discrete transistor designs or new IC designs over $30 or $40 dollars. After all I wanted a "good radio". I was pretty much interested in an analog radio because in this price range digital sets are usually noisey, battery hogs, and plauged by "birdies". Finally, I ordered one of these because "what the heck" ten bucks, if it sucks I'll give it away. When it showed up I plopped in a set of AA's tuned the dial and heard lots of stations, good sign. Any radio that has analog tuning with a dial thats two inches across is a challenge, but thats ok. Low and behold theres KGNC from over 120 miles away and it's 1500hrs(3pm). What the hay! Listen up buyers, This radio is TEN BUCKS and it can hear stations others can't. No one has learned how to put sensitivity, selectivity, and audio into one box this size but this radio is a miracle! Don't get me wrong this is not a Sony 2010 or a GE SRIII, but it's small enough and cheap enough to have one in every room of the house and in each car. And the speaker is good enough that you don't have to use phones. It has a telescoping antenna for FM. Some radios that cost 6X as much don't have a tele. ant., they use the headphone cables. That means even if your using the speaker you have to have the headphones plugged in or the FM stinks. Since this is still a new toy it hasn't yet made it to the glove box in the truck, I'm still playing with it. I live in the Panhadle of Texas and last night I listened to a talk show in Nebraska before bed; woke up and touched the dial and there was a great morning show in San Antonio. If this radio was $70.00 I'd give it 3 or 3.5 stars, for TEN to FOURTEEN dollars it is a true bargain! Some others may review this radio and subtract points because of selectivity or something, remember this radio cost less than a good burger and fries! I've spent thousands of dollars on radios; Collins,Icom,Yaesu,Sony, and others. I have better radios than this one but I've never had anything for >$15.00 that was this good.
Buy two or three, I did.

Sony SRF-HM01V S2 Sports Walkman Street Style Headphone Radio Review

(More customer reviews)I have always preferred headband style radios over armband radios while running so I am in a constant search for the right one. Too often, Sony and others develop their headband radios, which are fairly obviously targeted to joggers, exercisers, and other active people but then forget about that target in final production. I've used previous models of headband radios that provide superior comfort and stability on the head. Early on the problem was that they would rust out from the salt in my perspiration. Newer models have solved that problem but created another. The "Street Style" behind the head technique of wearing this unit has a lot of promise. But it can be very uncomfortable to all but the smallest heads. They should really fit these to a regular sized western male instead of to a tiny Thai women. That said, it does have a stable and quiet fit even after several miles. But it will hurt your ears a bit.
As to reception and sound. Well...I've seen it better in other units. I won't say it is poor. But it could be better. And I know this because I could compare it to another Sony model (the analog tuning twin of this one). The mega bass isn't as mega and the FM capture is weaker. The weather and TV bands are neat but not very practical. And I have some concerns about the funky sliding battery cover. It works, but I just don't trust it. One plus is that the ear units attach to the loop internally. My last pair had a metal set screw that rusted and broke. All in all I give it 3 stars, average, and I will keep it until I find a better one. A redesigned and lighter version of the flawed SRFHM55 would be the trick. Get it together Sony!

Sony AM/FM/Weather Walkman Radio - SRF-M37V Review

(More customer reviews)The Sony SRF-M37V is a palm-sized Walkman type radio that requires headphones. It uses one AAA battery providing reasonable battery life. It is quite superior for AM listening and has become a favorite with hobby DXers. If you are trying to hear a distant talk show, this radio is a great choice. The FM section is average in both selectivity and sensitivity. Your headphone cord doubles as its FM antenna. You'll hear local stations but don't expect miracles. Weather band reception was an afterthought. Sony's engineers did not add narrowband circuitry appropriate for receiving weather band stations. By using the same broadband circuitry used for broadcast FM, you'll hear nearly all seven weather frequencies at once regardless of which channel you have chosen. Unless you are fairly close to a weather band transmitter, do not expect to hear anything on this band. The radio does include a time-of-day clock, but it can only be read when the unit is off. Finally, all the pushbuttons on the unit are quite sensitive and can be accidentally pressed especially the power on/off button. Learn to use the button lock-out switch on the top of the set. It will cure your aggravation. Instead of the SRF-M37V, I would highly recommend the very basic Sony SRF-59 all-analog Walkman radio. It's half the price, works just as well on AM and sounds better. The only thing you will lose is the convenient pushbutton presets offered on the SRF-M37V. Either way, you can't go wrong. Both Sony models are good values.

Sony SRF-M37W Walkman Digital Tuning Weather/FM/AM Stereo Radio (Black) Review

1) PLL (Phase locked loop) digitally synthesized, am/fm/weatherband radio with very low noise, i.e., very good sensitivity as well as good selectivity (the ability to distinguish between adjacent frequency, interfering signals).
2) This radio can only be manually tunned by pressing the + (forward/up) or - (back/down) frequency tuning button. It will even advance semi-automatically if you hold the button down and you will hear the stations as the radio sweeps through the frequencies so you know how/where to locate stations (unlike Sangean pocket radios which mute during automatic scan and seek functions). Thus, there is no fully automatic, press and scan or even a seek function, but I have found this manual tuning capability totally adequate because of the simplicity of the five preset tuning buttons for each band (with 2 sets of five presets on the fm band). It is quite silly that Sony didn't take the time right now to also add 5 more presets on a second set of am bands just as they did on fm on the SRF-M37V for example which has 25 presets available and not 20 presets as on this newest model. This is especially because the am reception on this radio is quite exceptional in addition to all of its other very nice features.
3) It is as good as the Sangean pocket radios that I have recently tried as well (including the famous DT-200VX). It remains to be seen if the new (June 2008) Sangean DT-400W (with NOAA weather coverage and broadcast alerts) will compete with the Sony SFR-37W.
4) It has a one year limited warranty and clearly not just 90 days as listed on numerous websites, including Amazon.com. This time limit is clearly listed on the instructions with the radio (the included Sony warranty certificate comes attached to the radio instructions).
5) I get excellent reception here in the mountains of New Mexico for a super-portable am/fm/weatherband radio receiver with 20 presets (5 on am/10 on fm and 5 for weather) that lasts 30-54 hours on one AAA battery. Weatherband signals are weak by the nature of the short range, low power NOAA transmitters and you must turn up the volume to adequately hear them and then adjust it back down for most am/fm stations especially.
6) All presets are very intuitive and extremely easy to use (a one button press system) as well as very easy to set. They are also easy to change as needed, especially if you travel a lot. Also, as long as you change the battery within 3 minutes of removing it, no presets will be lost (fortunately changing the battery is a snap).
7) The SRF-M37W is as extremely durable and well made and should last a very long time. In fact, my son's SRF-37V (its immediate predecessor) was extensively chewed 3 years ago by his young puppy (whose name is his gal Friday since he first got her on a Friday) and it still works quite well! Also, the battery cover is normally hinged to the radio so that it can't be lost (unless excessive force is used when it is opened and in this case it is designed not to break, but instead to simply pop out, but can easily be reinstalled as shown in the Sony manual). It also comes with a belt clip that nicely and firmly attaches to the radio for convenience. It also has a lock switch to keep all settings unchanged (except for the volume control) with an LCD screen indicator for the locked position as well as a battery level indicator, etc.
8) When using it inside a building go as close to the windows/doors as you can to get the very best reception. Radio waves do not penetrate very thick structures well so the best reception should generally be found outdoors for hiking, jogging, just plain walking, etc.
9) As others have stated you probably will want a better set of earphones to fully enjoy listening on all bands, but the supplied pair is certainly adequate for most purposes. In addition, however, I have found that if you use a set of headphones with a longer cord (such as the ~1 m cord on the Sony MDR-Q22LP clip-on earphones), substantially improved fm reception results since the cord acts as the fm antenna on these radios.
10) For those like me who will use this device near a computer, some degree of RF (radio frequency) interference (static on both the am and fm bands) can be expected. The RF interference is substantially reduced the further you move away from the computer or if you hold the radio in your hand or if you can extend the headphone cord fully.
This Sony is my personal update for an old analog Sony radio (the SRF-19W am/fm stereo radio Walkman) from the late 1980's that is still working (also with no speaker and with a DX RF (radio frequency) gain switch even way back then)!

(More customer reviews)When searching for a new mp3 player the trail always leads me back to Sony. Its more about overall quality then brand loyalty. Over the years Sony's Walkman line has gone the distance and more. The all new Sony S Series Walkman adds to the legacy.
The S-540 8gb Walkman brings it on with a crisp, color enhanced 2.4" LCD screen that is easy on the eyes. At 2" x 4" x .4", it comes in a bit larger then its older cousin. A larger body undoubtedly is required to provide support for the external speaker system. The speakers won't get confused with my home system anytime soon but they do provide an excellent source. With headphones on, this mp3 player delivers a cornucopia of sound. Missing but not that noticeable is the noise reduction feature. The on board equalizer can be tweaked to one's own preferences or users can choose one of the six presets.
The Navigation pad located directly under the screen is a breeze to operate. Three controls are located on the right side of the unit. One locks in the controls. The second one allows for easy switching from speaker to headset. Volume is the third control. The standard headphone jack and a USB port can be found on the bottom of the unit. The detachable flip out stand is an okay feature that allows for easy standing on my desk or shelf top. I would have preferred that it was permanently mounted.
The S-540 supports mp3, mp4, AAC, AVC, WMV, WMA, and PCM. PCM is Sony's version of WAV. It pairs well with Napster. Rhapsody is a no go. Downloading my playlists from Windows Media Player was a breeze without the usual hiccups associated with older mp3 players. I did download a couple of photographs on this model. The display was outstanding. Unlike my older Walkman, this model doesn't offer the wallpaper photo display option.
The built in FM tuner picked up all ten of my stations. With auto scanner functionality, thirty preset slots are available. The FM radio is crystal clear when using the headset as an antenna. The alarm and timer features are a nice addition. This model also has an impressive on board microphone located on the bottom of the unit. There are three voice settings. Voice playback quality was excellent. Battery life has always been biggie with Sony. On a full charge, I got almost a full thirty five hours of music.
This Sony mp3 player comes packaged with a USB cable, flip stand, ear buds, installed operating manual, and the standard one year warranty. Body finishes for the 8GB model include; black, red, pink and violet. The 16GB unit comes in a black or red body.
Economically priced, this latest edition to the Walkman line is a durable and reliable product that simply delivers. Easy to use and loaded with features, the Sony S-540 is a prime time performer.

Although the station-lock feature is useful, the unit keeps beeping whenever the locked buttons are jostled. Finally, I wish they'd either include better earphones or leave them out and let us buy our own. On the plus side: convenient, and with good sound (using Koss portaphones!)

Sony SRF-M80V S2 Sports Walkman Arm Band Radio with FM/AM, TV and Weather Channels Review

(More customer reviews)I listen to the radio while jogging and my search for the perfect companion has come to an end. This one is it.
Over the years I have tried most of the main brands (Panasonic, Sangean, Radio Shack) and consistently found the Sony's to be surperior in reception and sound. Most recently I was using the Sony SRF-M78 armband radio, the predessor to this one. The SRF-M80V is better in several respects. Let's look at the details:
Design:
The white and orange color scheme is ugly in my mind but who cares. This is a tool, not a fashion statement. The waistband clip is much better than on the M78 allowing carry on both arm and waistband. This finally gives the option to put the radio where it belongs during running: the small of my back.
Button placement is intuitive and clear. However, the numbering on the buttons is starting to rub of and will probably be gone in a few weeks. No big deal, use a Sharpie for re-labeling if it bothers you.
Reception:
In one word: Great. I live in New York City which has notoriously difficult radio reception. Both FM and AM are as good as it gets for a portable unit. In addition this radio offers TV channel reception and weather band, both are coming in well enough to be useful.
Features:
As mentioned the M80V allows you to listen to FM, AM, TV, and WB and has sufficient presets for all channels. In addition you can use the radio as stop watch, split timer, or can set it for automatic power-off, useful if you tend to forget to turn off the unit. The volume control is a small wheel which turns much to easy, the only true flaw of the radio. I slipped a 10 cent rubber O-ring over the wheel to provide the right amount of friction so that the volume doesn't get knocked unintentionally. Works perfectly now.
Head Set:
I don't care for the ones that are provided and replaced them with a good pair of Sony earbuds. The Mega Bass button is useless with my earbuds but may give you more oomph with bigger headphones.
Conclusion:
A small, well designed radio with all the features that you might desire in a work-out companion. Great reception and great sound. Highly recommended.

I got sick of paying $30+ for this type of product so I started buying ultra cheap $10 brands. The sound quality was adequate for my needs. I listen to mostly educational tapes while riding my bike -- alternating with radio and sometimes music tapes. When I saw that for $10 more I could own a Sony i decided to give it a try. The extra $10 was worth it and I guess pays for the headphones. They produce great quality sound. The unit is well thought out in terms of design, switches etc. And I like the slimmer casing. I long for casings of yesteryear that were much better quality but it is on par with the models of today. I like the limit switch which prevents you from jacking up the sound to levels that damage hearing. It's easy to do with headphones. A word of warning to young people out there -- do that enough and you will be hard of hearing. I've experienced hearing loss from loud rock music and playing electric guitar. The first station I happened to listen to was classical and I could not believe how clear and full the sound was. A keeper. I notice early users from prior years did not like this model. They must have upgraded since then. (...)I was one of the first users of the original Sony walkman's in the early 80s and Sony continues a great tradition and I'm glad I decided to own one again.

(More customer reviews)This is a very good radio and better than my old Radio Shack brand that finally gave out.My old one mind you could only pick up a few stations clearly.Now with this new one I'm getting over 15 FM stations clearly some in Philly and some in New Jersey.I assume since I'm only 35 miles from Philly that would explain why I'm getting the outstanding reception.The AM is great as well as it comes in very clear.There are also a few features that come in handy.One is that you can set the radio to turn off automatically after a set time.Also has bass boost and a digital clock.I leave it on the DX mode because if it's on the local setting the stations will sometimes have static.Also you will be surprised at how tiny and compact it is making it easy to carry around.It's also very convenient to jog through the preset stations while on the go and it also has a lock mode for when you what just one station set.Now the important news.The provided headphones are useless.This is probably why other reviewers could not get good reception.Frankly,I got no reception at all when I pluged them in because the FM antenna is in the headphone wire.Not only that but the ear buds don't even fit in your ears.What I got instead are the Sennheisers PX-100 portable headphones and now I'm getting outstanding reception from them as well as great sound quality.So if you order the sony radio make sure you get some portable headphones too.
