Sharp 200 Watt iPod® Docking Station - Black/Silver (CDDH790N) Review

Sharp 200 Watt iPodandreg; Docking Station - Black/Silver (CDDH790N)
Average Reviews:

The Sharp CD-DH899N has ok functionality but the speakers that come with it are terrible. They had high-end distortion even at low-moderate volume. This was the case with all the functions - CD, radio, tape, line-in and iPod. Thank goodness the speakers are not hard-wired in! I swapped them out with various other old speakers, and my best set was 15-year old Sony speakers with good speaker wire, which were 8 Ohm and had plenty of power handling. (The original speakers were 4 Ohm with thin wires.) That cleared up the distortion, although I have not tried cranking it yet. Why did Sharp design speakers that can't handle the signal??? The stereo itself works as advertised. Note that the cassette deck does not have a record function, only play. Also, there are no audio inputs to the stereo except a line-in. No audio outputs either, only the speakers. The CD tray is very flimsy, the tape deck is a little clunky, I kinda wish an extended warranty was available. I got this new on e-bay for a great prices, so it's an ok unit for a bedroom for the price, but do not buy this unless you have some good speakers to swap out!

Sharp Electronics XLDH229N 100W Micro System with Docking Slot for iPod (Black) Review

Sharp Electronics XLDH229N 100W Micro System with Docking Slot for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Micro Sytem to listen to my iPod in my bedroom. After it came, I opened the box and was amazed to find a remote -- the description didn't mention one. I LOVE the remote -- It has lots of buttons, but it's pretty intuitive after you begin to use it. I get REALLY bad radio reception in my hi-rise, so I almost never listen to the radio. I connected the two antennas that come with the unit last evening, and was amazed at the number of stations, and quality of reception that this machine gets!
It plays CDs and MP3 discs (I'm going to make a DVD of MP3s and see if it plays. Haven't tried this.) It has a radio (AM/FM), and it plays my iPod. The remote can be used to control the iPod as well. It sounds WONDERFUL!!! I love it that it has a mega bass feature. And did I mention that it SOUNDS WONDERFUL!! I'm delighted with the sound and the quality of this machine.
It also plays from the USB port. I was thinking that this is what I'll use, but I have a 60 gig iPod Classic, and I'm loving the music from the iPod. And if I get tired of it, I'll just change the order or the playlist.
My neighbor has been whooping it up and disturbing me. I loaded my iPod with some wonderful choices for sleeping -- my favorite is gongs and bells, and I keep it going all night. I don't hear the noises now. I love it that the iPod shuts off and the Micro System shuts down to stand-by after the playlist is finished.
I think the value for the price is just amazing.

RCA CD Micro System with Dock for iPhone/iPod - Black (RS2127IH) Review

RCA CD Micro System with Dock for iPhone/iPod - Black (RS2127IH)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got this today at a brick and mortar store. Paid less than $100 and think it is a great deal. CD, ipod, radio player. Three pieces- main body, two in-line speakers (lines are detachable). Easy to understand how to use even before I found the manual online. The remote control was gone from mine so can't comment on that. There are 20 programmable pre-sets for radio stations. The only thing I don't like is that you can only go up using the memory settings. The button says MEM UP; there is no MEM DOWN. :( -- I've got the volume at less than 5 and it's still almost too loud. Nice sound for our family room and kitchen. Good enough for this mom of 3.
Hope that helps!

Yamaha CRX-330BL Micro Component Receiver CD Player Unit Review

Yamaha CRX-330BL Micro Component Receiver CD Player Unit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This unit is compact, though deep, so make sure you have the shelf space for it. The ipod dock and USB ports on top make it technologically up to date. However, it has no additional RCA inputs on the back, so you can't hook up any other source (e.g. a non-ipod MP3 player or your computer) to it. As long as you want to play CDs, listen to the radio or your ipod, it's fine. Remote control allows limited ipod navigation. Sound quality good, will fill a small to medium-sized room with clean sound at moderately loud but not head-banging levels. You can adjust bass and treble, and it has a subwoofer output that I didn't try. UPDATE: The USB port may allow you to plug in some non-Ipod MP3 players. I don't have one so I haven't tried this, and the instruction manual is not explicit about this.

JVC UX-PL5 CD Micro Component System Review

JVC UX-PL5 CD Micro Component System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a JVC boombox once, and it was the best sounding radio/cassette boombox I ever had. Therefore, I wanted another JVC product. I was disappointed that it wasn't as great-sounding as I had anticipated. However, it plays nicely. In retrospect, I would have bought the other JVC compact stereo with 100 watts of power. I didn't see the other one until I had already ordered this one. If you're reading this, I would recommend going with the 100-watt JVC instead of this one, which is only 70 watts. They're about the same price. I also just bought a Sony boombox, and it sounds much better than this JVC stereo.

Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W Review

Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After I came home from 5 months in Australia to find my Aiwa stereo not working I knew it was time to buy new audio equipment for my room. I like the idea of a shelf system so I began looking for one that was 10 years newer and fit my preferences. I went the stereo route because I wanted a radio and CD player and ultimately a tape deck, although this unit does not have one. I had read several reviews of this model and went into the store (BJ's Wholesale Club of all places) to test it out. Bringing my iPod, I was thoroughly impressed. I went back the next day and purchased this bad boy.
The stereo comes in a huge box but is managable. I was surprised to find the unit overall is very light-weight and set up is easy. Once I finally had it set up, I was immediately impressed with the stellar sound. This thing is LOUD. You get crisp highs, balanced mids, and thumping lows thanks to the additional subwoofer it comes with. I don't think I've heard an iPod sound as good as it does with this unit. As I have read previously, the speaker cords are a bit short. The satellite speakers are fine, but how is a subwoofer expected to be placed on the floor as I want it with such relatively short cords? I'm planning to get some additional cord so I can place the speakers where I want.
I'm very happy with this system and being a bit picky about my audio sound has proven to help me find a great stereo. All kinds of music sound great, from thumping hip hop to reggae to accoustic rock.
This thing is also pretty sleek looking, being a metallic black, modern looking, and light blue accents in the speakers.
Why not a 5?
-Short cord length
-Small display which is hard to see from far away
-No custom EQ, although "rock" mode sounds best
-No tape deck. I admit tapes are out-dated but it would be nice to have the capability to play them
Overall VERY happy with my purchase and definitely recommend this system to and audiophile who wants to pack some punch into his/her audio system.

Technics SC-HD505 Executive Microsystem Review

Technics SC-HD505 Executive Microsystem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although there are four separate components and plenty of dials, toggles, and buttons, this is not the set for tinkerers who demand control of the sound. There's a button that gives you enhanced bass and a dial that supplies fine tuning of the tweeter, and that's it! Not even the ability to balance the speakers. The flip side of course is simplicity, and simplicity is the name of the game from assembly to operation of these handsome components and speakers. Just link everything together, plug it in, and enjoy impressive sound. Impressive, that is, for everyone but those who want to rattle the walls with amplified rock and loud orchestral compositions. They should look elsewhere. But for those who, like my wife and I, live in snug apartments and whose tastes run to small-group jazz and classical chamber music with emphasis on solo piano, violin, guitar, sax, and trumpet, Technics has put together a terrific audio system. Just squeeze it in wherever there's room and let it fill your space with warm, balanced sound.

This Technics microsystem has many features normally found only in high-end separate components. The horizontal-loading cassette deck loads tapes easily and smoothly, and a microprocessor helps protect your valuable tapes by automatically detecting the end of a cassette. In addition, high-efficiency speakers extend the frequency response into the midrange, reproducing guitar and vocal tones clearly with minimal distortion. The CD Text feature displays artist and song titles so you know what you're listening to, and the BLFS (Brisk Low-Frequency Sound) circuit delivers crisply defined bass without detracting from vocal clarity.

This unit is compact and has a great sound that is crisp and clear. I bought it mainly to use with my iPod. It also plays CDs; has a radio and a USB port. There's a huge, retro silver volume control in the middle. Every function can be controlled with the remote. After comparing this unit with the Sony at a comparable price, I decided to go with the Sharp because I thought the sound was better. There is ample bass and an equalizer with different settings. It's designed for a smaller room, but you can still crank up the volume to 30 and it's loud and distortion-free. Highly recommended.

Onkyo CS-325 CD Receiver System Review

Onkyo CS-325 CD Receiver System
Average Reviews:

In the price versus performance competitions, I always think Onkyo gives you the biggest bang for the bucks. I have a full size Onkyo 5.1. It sounds great and has been very reliable. Lately I have been looking for a mini system for my mom's apartment. After listening to Bose and other brands, I think the CS-325 gives the best value for the same money. I am an electrical engineer and had opened countless electronic equipment packagings. Let me tell you, I've never seen any packaging as neat and impecable as this one. The set up was simple and straight forward. The speaker feels very substantial, a sign of quality. Overall, the system looks very nice. Once set up, the controls are very user friendly. It is an excellent choice for a smaller space such as a city apartment. I am happy with its high to mid frequency range. I could ask for better bass perhaps due to its smaller woofer. Some may complain that the Ipod docking is optional. Still, it beats many systems that cost twice as much. At $200, it is a great buy. Onkyo CS-325 CD Receiver System

Denon D-M50S Executive Microsystem Review

Denon D-M50S Executive Microsystem
Average Reviews:

I just got this item recently and love the alumnium chasis construction. Very solid and seemingly indestructible.
Although it is made in China (where all the good stuff comes from), the quality and fit is excellent. The supplied Mission speakers are a good match for the system and sound great. I also like the ability to listen to one CD while I change out the other two.
My only beef are:
1. It doesn't come with cassette (what the hell are those?) deck
2. The CD changer is rather loud.
3. The unit was originally constructed for use in Asia and to adapt it to North American power supply, it comes with a bulging AC transformer that is piggy-backed on the unit - a rather disproportionately large protrusion with 4 screws.

With its small size, good looks, and quality sound, Denon's petite and stylish D-M50S executive microsystem is dressed to impress and built to thrill. The system features a central integrated amplifier/CD player/tuner alongside ported, 2-way, bookshelf speakers from the British loudspeaker manufacturer Mission, giving you not just great furniture, but great sound.Components in the D-M50S series are only 8.3 inches wide, yet they're endowed with circuitry for superior quality sound and sport an attractive design that blends easily with any interior. The system's front panel is made of silver aluminum, and a half mirror has been added to the display window to enhance its appearance. The CD section features a 3-disc changer that lets you listen to music without interruption. The main unit (model UD-M50) boasts 30 watts per channel stereo power into 6-ohm speakers like those supplied. Dual stereo analog auxiliary inputs facilitate hookup of additional components, whether a DVD player, MP3 player, or Denon's matching DRR-M30 silver cassette deck. For additional convenience, a stereo analog output and optical digital-audio jack let you record radio broadcasts or CD sound to cassette or to a stand-alone CD or minidisc recorder. The included Mission MS-50 bookshelf speakers use 4.3-inch woofers and 1-inch soft-dome tweeters. Their ported design grants a little deeper low-end response (down to a respectable 70 Hz), and they're magnetically shielded to allow distortion-free placement near your TV or computer monitor. The UD-M50 includes the high-end Source Direct function, and the audio and power circuits in all components of the series feature highly-acclaimed Denon technology to ensure that the sound you hear is perfectly smooth and transparent.Other features include 40 FM/AM station presets, SDB (Super Dynamic Bass) equalization, a 24-hour clock, a sleep timer (with daily and one-time event timers as well), and a .125-inch headphone jack for private listening. Got this for a christmas present a couple of years ago, have had no problems with it, it actually pumps pretty good..but not good enough for my taste ;) this is a great stereo for someone who likes to hook up their gaming console to a stereo, since the Audio/Video cables are on the front of the unit, this stereo also has the capability to play other media as well as output the AUX at the same time with it's Game Mixing button, which allows me to listen to Rush on CD while playing Halo 2 :D if you're looking for a stereo that will wake the neighbourhood with the bass, this isn't quite it although it comes close, and unlike the above reviews I have had no problems with CDs not reading or anything. The only problem I have with this stereo is the Groove and V-Groove bass enhancment settings seem to remove the lowest frequencies of bass, which sort of defeats the purpose IMO..other than that it is a very good unit for 240 watts. I will most likely be upgrading to a JVC MX-GB6, because my friend has one of those, and that could EASILY replace high end home theatre systems with it's dual 170 watt subwoofers.

When I saw this system in the store, I just had to get it, especially after I heard the bass on this thing. The sound is just ideal for me, being a hip-hop fan. Just be sure to stay away from windows when you play cds with alot of bass- you could be dodging shattered glass!!! I mean this system even wakes up my nieghbors when the volume turned down. I even used the giga-tube to blow dry my hair the other day!! The features on the MXGT-80 are quite good, but I think they could of came up with more a variety of different sounds instead of just D. Club, Classical, and Stadium. Besides that the system is all I wanted in a stereo. I love that it also has the cd optical outlet for cd recorders. Now I can finally put my recorder to good use! I recommend this to anyone who wants to own a REAL boom box.
