Sangean HDT-1X HD Radio Component Tuner Review

Sangean HDT-1X HD Radio Component Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The HDT-1 is an excellent tuner however being the initial offering from Sangean there were some annoyances like the display that could not be dimmed and no optical output. Well these two issues have been addressed in the HDT-1X! Other improvements like forced analog mode; split comparison between HD and analog signals; accurate time keeping; display that goes black when in the standby mode but you can push the INFO button and the time will come on and stay on for a few seconds. The sensitivity of the tuner is superb as I live almost 50 miles north of NYC. While I do not get all the HD stations, I pull in a fair number to cover the various music genres. I am most satisfied and I am not a teckie, but I know a quality item; as I said this is my second Sangean tuner and I am enjoying it! Buy it, but make sure you have a good FM antenna -- I am using an indoor whip antenna and a Magnum Signal Sleuth and I get HD stations -- imagine with a roof or attic antenna (I can't have either as I live in a townhouse). Of course if you live close to a large city like NYC you won't need any elaborate antenna!

JVC KTHDPK1 / KT-HDPK1 / KT-HDPK1 Transportable HD Radio Receiver with Car Kit Review

JVC KTHDPK1 / KT-HDPK1 / KT-HDPK1 Transportable HD Radio Receiver with Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
if you want an easy to install cheap HD receiver unit, this is for you
-The unit is fairly easy to install if you do it yourself, though you would want to have basic understanding of your own car and how to hook up a car radio and some mechanical knowledge.
other then that you should have a professional or someone with knowledge of car radios to install it for you
-come with a good quality car kit and mount.
-Easy to program and easy navigation of menus
-good price and nice simple LCD screen
Cons:
-a lot of wires hanging about unless you can some how organize it well, if you don't like a lot of wires hanging about, you'll probably think about an internal HD car radio instead of a external receiver unit.
-Unit does gets a bit hot, but i there doesn't seem to be any problems with it as of yet
-depending on your car, the receiver uses AUX port or the tape player adapter, if you don't have one, there is installation instructions for cars without AUX, but its going to be a little harder to install.

Coby HDR650 Component HD Radio Receiver (Black) Review

Coby HDR650 Component HD Radio Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the Coby HDR-650 HD radio as an xmas gift, as I was very interested in HD radio. The looks and features of the radio were very attractive - I like the display, but what use is a good looking radio if it can't pick up stations? The power supply that came with the radio (a KY Industries model from China) radiates so much radio noise that I could not pick up ONE station on the AM band. I know it's the power supply, because whenever the KY power supply is plugged in, every AM radio in the room loses all reception whether the Coby is turned on or not.
The FM band is noise free, with pretty good sensitivity. The difference between analog and HD radio is striking - much clearer.
I am an electronic technician, so I decided to try one of my own power supplies with the radio. It takes 12 volts at 500mA, with the positive voltage going to the tip of the connector. What a difference! I am in suburban NYC, and with a clean power supply I can now pick up 35-40 AM stations and 9 of them are in HD.
If Coby changes their power supply to one that doesn't make radio noise, I would change my number of stars to 4, but as it is, the Coby HDR-650 is only usable as an FM radio, not an AM one, and rates a 2.

JVC KT-HDP1 Universal Car and Home HD Radio Tuner (Turns any Stock Car Radio / CD Player to High Definition Radio) Review

JVC KT-HDP1 Universal Car and Home HD Radio Tuner (Turns any Stock Car Radio / CD Player to High Definition Radio)
Average Reviews:

The tuner works well and picks up AM and FM as well as or better than a standard receiver. It works for what I needed. The issues I have with it that would make it an ideal receiver are; 1. You need to buy accessory packages for use in an auto or indoors 2. It runs a little warm. 3. Tuning is somewhat difficult because there is no way to manually tune, it only searches and if you want to pull in a weak station you must try and stop the scan right in the station you want as it passes it. The remote does not have the ability to manually tune either. 4. The preset buttons don't always work right away when press them which means sometimes I must press a button 2 or 3 times. 5. I cannot find individual parts of accessories only kits. (For example I may want an additional auto power cord but I have to buy the entire auto kit for that one part. 6. The tuner graphics are not changeable and its monochrome display looks like old technology.
It works. I had a specific use for the tuner so it does what I need. If i wanted to convert my car radio to a digital (HD) radio, I think I would be better off buying a new full car radio with HD. I needed one for my car and for use in my house for occasional special use so it fits my bill. It works but I would spend more for a better radio if I needed to use it more.

VR3 Roadmaster/VR3 HD Radio Receiver Review

VR3 Roadmaster/VR3 HD Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

This is a very poorly designed product, all the way around. It has the cosmetic appearance of a very low-end electronic product. The cable from the remote to the base unit is bulky & short. Lousy design making it hard to install. The base unit is massive and hard to conceal under the dash. Power needs to come from your 12v accessory/cigarette lighter on the dash. Again, making it hard to conceal/install. To sum up.......Save Yourelf Plenty of Frustration, and AVOID this product.

Sangean HDT-1 HD Radio Component Tuner Review

Sangean HDT-1 HD Radio Component Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like the HDT-1, it's easy to set up and use, I like it's high tech industrial design, I love the blue display, it looks like my satellite receiver. On stations that are not using the Ibiquity format (HD Radio), it will read the RDS data employed by many broadcasters. It's conventional AM and FM reception is good compared to other AM/FM tuners in it's price range, but it's HD reception is only adequate, at this juncture, there are no other HD tuners in this price range. I tested the HDT-1 tuner in a metropolitan area and it quickly located dozens of HD stations on the FM band and a few in the AM band. Not every market has a lot of HD station, check before buying an HD tuner. If you do not live in a metropolitan area, near the HD station, reception will be spotty and will require a roof top antenna, the included AM and FM antennae are for local reception only. When the HD signal is weak, the tuner switches to regular analog demodulation, where I live, 65 miles away from most of the transmitters, I only get four stations solidly in HD, and I have a good attic antenna system.
Please don't consider HD Radio High Definition, it is NOT high definition, it is a digital format that means terrestrial radio broadcasters may employ multi-casting, more than one program stream on the same frequency, and that's very cool. HD radio may provide a cleaner signal with no hiss on moderately weak stations. The audio is not CD quality but it's quite good, it employs MPEG encoding, it sounds like an iPod, if that's all you've heard, HD Radio is fine. MPEG is also used on satellite radio, it's the reason they can cram so much in a narrow band.
The following is an addendum to my original review.
The following contains some techno gibberish, don't sweat it, it won't hurt. The HDT-1 outperforms all my previous FM tuners, it hears stations my other tuners can't. Buried in the Info menu is a Signal Strength Indicator ( helps aiming your antenna! ), a Bit Error Rate display and a Carrier to Noise display all very interesting. I have found reception varies day to day, I now receive as many as 10 HD FM signals, on bad days only 4, HD Radio propagation is a very complex issue that taxes many Engineers, NPR's engineering department has posted some interesting data on that topic.
Some folks are suggesting things they want to add, though a TOSLINK output would be nice, I believe it is an imperative that Sangean add the ability to manually toggle HD demodulation since marginal signals bounce between the HD stream and analog, very annoying sometimes. End of dweeb rant.
Bottom line, this is a fine product, the Sangean HDT-1 is a winner.

Channelmaster CM-3020 Deep Fringe Advantage TV Antenna Review

Channelmaster CM-3020 Deep Fringe Advantage TV Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I live about 35 miles from NY City and 65 miles from Philadelphia, in a very hilly region. I previously had a Radio Shack UHF/VHF/FM antenna in my attic and received analog NY City TV stations OK. I installed a Samsung DTB-H260F HD tuner for my HD-ready TV and received a few NY City HD stations with that older antenna. (Warning - you must use an HD input on an HD-ready TV with the Samsung DTB-H260F to see the on-screen menus). I used [...]to help select the right direction and the right antenna for HD signals for my house. The PCT International #3020 Deep Fringe TV Antenna improved reception and increased the number of HD stations available (also attic mounted). Adding the Channel Master 7777 High-gain mast-mount UHF/VHF TV antenna preamplifier made an even bigger difference. I now receive most of the NY City area over-the-air HD stations, and most of the Philadelphia area HD stations (with the antenna directed at NY City). I was surprised at the number and quality of the Philadelphia signals considering these stations are almost 90 degrees off of the primary antenna direction and over 60 miles away.

Onkyo UP-HT1 HD Radio Tuner Review

Onkyo UP-HT1 HD Radio Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product has a really low star review for no reason except people can't objectively review something. (see rant below review)
It works and works great. The sound quality is amazing, like listening to radio on CD. If you are an NPR listener and your station supports HD, get this! It works, works well with the receiver I have and I have the Onkyo Ipod dock plugged into it too, (which also works flawlessly)
My only caution is to buy a powered external antenna ( I have a Terk that's a few years old). Most receivers will not pick up well enough for HD with the awful FM antenna (aerial to some) supplied, especially if you are far from the source. You've spent the money for an Onkyo HD Tuner, so buy an extra antenna. Hint: Many old TV "Rabbit Ears" will work, new or old.
Overall, a good investment if you like radio and like it clear. Yes, it's pricey, but think it was worth it. Get a good external antenna and you won't be disappointed.
Now, for the rant:
First off, don't give an item a bad review if it's DOA. Send it back, get a new one and then review it. Sometimes, you get a lemon, whether it's a car, appliance or an HD tuner! Yes, it's disappointing, but it happens. Make sure it works with your system before you buy it, the description lists which receivers it works with. If your situation doesn't allow you to return it, that's not the fault of the product, so don't give it a bad rating.
Sorry, had to get that out.

Unit connectors have intermittent connection. Unit gets very hot and then the display becomes impossible to read in daylight. Remote has very poor range and doesn't respond off axis. The HD Jump I have is bigger than the JVC, but the quality is so much better, both in quality and performance.
This unit gets so hot, that I can't believe the electronics and display will last very long.
I am returning the unit.

ATI 100-715331 TV Wonder 650 PCI Interface High Definition Personal Video Recorder for PC Review

ATI 100-715331 TV Wonder 650 PCI Interface High Definition Personal Video Recorder for PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This ATI hd tv tuner is the cheapest way to watch hdtv right now. However, consumers will pay a price by troubleshooting their hd tuner to work. I have a fancy dual core computer with a high end graphics card (ATI 1800x).
Don't bother installing the drivers that come with the tuner because they are garbage. Go directly to the ati website and download the newest drivers because they are much better.
Firstly, the hd signal looks amazingly crisp when the signal comes in. Unfortunately, I find that I have to change the direction of my antenna for certain channels and it can take many minutes to get the signal perfect because it is very sensitive.
One very nice aspect about the hd software that comes with it is it lets you record in full native hd quality and you can keep these files for as long as youd like. Unfortunately, the software doesn't let you edit which part of the recording you would like to keep. The only way to edit what you want is to turn on and off the tv tuner in symphony with what you want to record.
The software constantly records what you watch so you can pause and rewind so this can fill up your hard drive quickly. It would be nice to be able to edit out what you don't want to record easier while maintaining the full quality of the video.
Another problem with the current software is it has very misleading indicators as to how big the recorded files are when you export them. They are completely unreliable.
I use my hd tuner for only a few shows every week but I thoroughly enjoy using it. However, it takes a lot of effort to get it to work optimally. If you don't mind the hassle, this is a great chance for you to get hdtv on your computer.
I live in Hollywood California where the reception is supposed to be very good.

PIONEER GEX-P20HD - HD TUNER FOR HD READY PIONEER HEADUNITS Review

PIONEER GEX-P20HD - HD TUNER FOR HD READY PIONEER HEADUNITS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sound quality of the HD signal is dazzling and it's awesome to be able to pull in all the extra stations. I live in the L.A. area and get plenty of programming here. I'm pleased with how well it pulls in the signal in areas where I used to get poor signal quality from my factory tuner. It cuts out pretty bad when the signal is too weak though.
The only real disappointment is the integration with the Pioneer head unit. It's as if the two product teams never talked to each other. The head unit behaves strangely if I leave it on HD Tuner when I turn off the power. So I switch to AUX 1, CD, or USB before I turn off the ignition and then everything is OK. Otherwise the stereo doesn't turn on at all (have to turn it on) or it turns on but the display is all messed up.
The install was very simple. No complaints there.
One big improvement would be a pass-through setting. It wouldn't take much engineering to change it so that you could pass the antenna signal straight through to the head unit in areas where you don't have any HD signal or where the signal is weak. Then you wouldn't have to listen to the tuner fighting itself over deciding which band to use.
But when it's working, it sounds AMAZING. The FM quality is top notch and the AM quality is dazzling.
UPDATE 8/5/10
One more gripe (or "suggestion"?) is that the HD tuner isn't actively tuning unless it is the current Source from the head unit. So if you switch from CD to HD Radio, it takes a few seconds for it to search and tune in the signal. Why?!?!?! As long as there's power from the head unit, it should keep working away and pulling in the best possible signal so it's ready to go whenever you switch to that Source.
I've also noticed a bug where the signal cuts out and that locks up the tuner. The only way to wake it back up is to power off the head unit and turn it back on ("reboot" the stereo).
Again, very poor integration.

I use this as a passenger on a multi-hour daily commute in the Colorado Front Range, where there are about 12 commercial and 3 non-commercial stations broadcasting HD.
The battery lasts about 8 hours, re-charged by USB. There is no way to open the case to replace the battery.
Sensitivity is amazing with the headphone cord antenna. On travel in Rock Hill, SC, I received distant stations from North Wilkesboro and Raleigh.
However, it DOES NOT give satisfactory reception through the Aux-In system jacks of 3 cars that I tried.
Some features not indicated in the manual:
It also receives RDS (giving basic id only). Some stations do broadcast both HD and RDS. When a signal is weak, only RDS will be decoded.
When the indicator shows HD1+ or HD2+, that simply means there is another 1 (or 2) more HD program(s) "above" the current one.
Wished-for improvements:
0.1 MHz tuning resolution, for use outside North America.
Better local strong-signal rejection.
Drilled hole or ring in case for a cloth strap

Sangean HDR-1 Table Top HD Radio Receiver Review

Sangean HDR-1 Table Top HD Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After owning a Sangean WR-2 clock radio for a year and a half and growing more fond of it, I decided to get another upscale radio for my office, a radio with a remote control so I could avoid computer interference by keeping the radio a good 6 feet away. After reading about HD radio and Sangean's entrance into the market, I decided to take a chance. Worst case scenario, I figured, is that it would be another high-grade radio like my Sangean WR-2. Like the WR-2, the HDR-1 has a high-grade feel, a solid construction, memory presets, a remote control, and strong sensitivity on AM and FM. However, the HDR-1 is definitely an upgrade and you might consider that it has the following advantages and differences:
1. Two speakers instead of one.
2. Easy-to-use (simply plug in) AM external antenna for hard-to-get stations.
3. HD quality is clearly discernable, clear, full, no static, no "birdy," no chirps.
4. Some HD stations have multi-broadcasts.
5. Most functions have to be performed with the remote. For this reason, I don't see this as a bedside radio. Who wants to squint at their remote in a dark bedroom? More appropriate for a bedside radio is the Sangean WR-2 or the Eton Sound 100. But for office or anywhere that requires a distance between you and your radio, the HDR-1 is an excellent choice.
Update: Be aware that in AM it takes a few seconds before the radio "kicks in" to digital mode. The sound is so good it's hard to listen to non-digital AM stations. Even the strongest station in Los Angeles, KFI 640, sounds bad because it's non HD. One last point: I'm more and more in love with the speaker sound. I can't even play them as loud as I want to as I'm working when I have the radio on. But these dual speakers really shine.
Second Update: 1-19-07: After 3 weeks, I've discovered a weakness on AM: Rainy weather compromises the HD signal. This problem is compounded by the fact that the radio has weak conventional AM (much weaker for example than my Sangean WR-2 and my Eton/Grundig S350) so that when it's not in HD mode the AM sounds bad, a constant crackle in the background. FM remains strong in both HD and non HD mode, but Sangean needs to address this AM weakness.

Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner Review

Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, yes, this is a tuner, NOT a radio, and Amazon should correct that! Also, HD radio is NOT High Definition radio. The HD stands for Hybrid Digital. So don't assume you'll have better sound in HD than analog radio! That said,
I have been interested in getting an HD radio to try out the format. Being an audiophile, I checked several audiophile review sites for the Sangean tuners, and they weren't getting too good of reviews. Also, their price is $200-250.
Then I came across a review for this tuner, and how much better it is, saying the FM analog portion alone is worth the price.
I have to agree, the FM tuner is much better than the tuner in my $1000 PrePro! Analog reception picks up more stations and the sound is great! Haven't heard analog FM sound this good since the 60's! Analog AM is also better than my Prepro (though not by much). Great sound, and only $99 ! This is a steal, grab it before they jack up the price! Audiophie FM tuners go for $200 & up. All this performance, and it's about the size of a car stereo!
There are about 20 FM HD stations here in Chicago, and it pulls them all in great, except for one, which keeps switching between analog and HD. There are some AM HD stations in Chicago. It would show which were HD, but none of them had enough strength to switch the tuner from analog to HD, so I couldn't judge AM HD.
Now for some things that need improving: there are 40 presets; 20 for FM and 20 for AM....not enough for FM and too many for AM. If you want to hear a HD station in analog, there's no way to switch it back to analog, you have to listen in HD. The dial glows like a cellphone, which is great while you're using it, but when you turn it off, it still glows, like a night light in a dark room. When powering down, it should dim. You can dim it down in the menu so it doesn't glow in the dark, but then when you turn it on, you can't read it because it's dark. Who wants to set the dimmer everytime you turn it on and off?
Overall, it's more than worth it.

Coby HDR700 Portable HD Radio System (Black) Review

Coby HDR700 Portable HD Radio System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the product for a few weeks now. I've noticed that there are differences in performance depending on the situation. I'm not sure if this is due to the product itself or if it is HD radio itself that is to blame. Here is what I've noticed:
1) I primarily listen to AM radio, but when I listen to FM radio, the HDR-700 mostly performs as I expected. There is an easily noticable sound quality difference between the HD and regular radio, but it's not huge. Only stations that are already almost completely static free will come in HD.
2) On my AM radio stations, when the unit locks into the HD signal, the difference is pretty amazing. I can't normally get any AM radio station to be completely static free, but this easily does that and more WHEN IT GETS A HD SIGNAL
There is one major problem. The DC adaptor that powers the until when not in battery mode severely interferes with the radio's reception. Severely. When the unit is plugged into the wall - the reception is so bad that a 100,000 watt station 50 miles from my house does not come in at all. However, as soon as it is on battery power, it works great.
