Coby HDR650 Component HD Radio Receiver (Black) Review

Coby HDR650 Component HD Radio Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the Coby HDR-650 HD radio as an xmas gift, as I was very interested in HD radio. The looks and features of the radio were very attractive - I like the display, but what use is a good looking radio if it can't pick up stations? The power supply that came with the radio (a KY Industries model from China) radiates so much radio noise that I could not pick up ONE station on the AM band. I know it's the power supply, because whenever the KY power supply is plugged in, every AM radio in the room loses all reception whether the Coby is turned on or not.
The FM band is noise free, with pretty good sensitivity. The difference between analog and HD radio is striking - much clearer.
I am an electronic technician, so I decided to try one of my own power supplies with the radio. It takes 12 volts at 500mA, with the positive voltage going to the tip of the connector. What a difference! I am in suburban NYC, and with a clean power supply I can now pick up 35-40 AM stations and 9 of them are in HD.
If Coby changes their power supply to one that doesn't make radio noise, I would change my number of stars to 4, but as it is, the Coby HDR-650 is only usable as an FM radio, not an AM one, and rates a 2.

We have two of these since Christmas, and have had none of the problems described! In fact, I read some negative reviews after purchasing, and was hoping I wouldn't have the same problems, and it's now April and so far, so good!
It has a great screen, great sound, is easy to use, has loads of storage, etc... We bought a case and rarely take it out, perhaps that has kept it safe... but has been dropped a few times and still don't have any problems. In fact we plan to buy another one, as it's a great value - it has a voice recorder, video, great long-lasting battery, FM radio, etc... and so it's a great value for the money.
We haven't used the software, we just transfer music via Explorer, so perhaps all the problems are from the software??
Anyway, I'm no mp3 player expert, but have to highly recommend this... Just based on other reviews, maybe don't use the software?!

Coby Mini FM Scanner Radio with Neck Strap CX61 Review

Coby Mini FM Scanner Radio with Neck Strap CX61

It keeps trying to jump up to the next frequency. Sometimes it will jump back down again, but other times it has to be reset.
I have used scanning digital radios before (cheaper than this one) and didn't have this problem. At first I thought it was a reception problem, but when it happened on strong signals as well as weak, and seemingly at random, I knew there was no hope for this radio.
I like the neckstrap and I use it with a different radio.

Coby CX90BLK Digital Pocket AM/FM Radio, Black Review

Coby CX90BLK Digital Pocket AM/FM Radio, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
i needed an AM radio to listen to while at the office and my first choice was the popular SONY ICF-S10MK2 which is a popular purchase here on Amazon.com... that radio was old, clunky, had a huge antennae, poor AM reception, a manual tuner dial so if you touched it you'd lose your station, and had a mono headphone jack so you could only hear sound out of one side (i verified this with 3 different sets of headphones).
the Coby DX-90 on the other hand was $2.00 more, is smaller, sleek, completely digital (no knobs or dials), has a stereo headphone jack (again verified this with 3 sets of headphones), comes with earbuds (that are not very good, but at least they tried), has an internal antennae, and has awesome AM reception.
get this radio, it's more than worth the money, don't get suckered into buying the Sony brand name like I did, you'll regret it.

Coby CX-9 Mini Digital AM/FM Stereo Pocket Radio Review

Coby CX-9 Mini Digital AM/FM Stereo Pocket Radio
Average Reviews:

First of all, the casing doesn't look half as good as it does in the picture above. Its finish is much rougher, uneven, and cheap.
The radio has poor reception, especially in-building, this is my biggest problem with this unit since it makes it unusable.
Furthermore, the volume levels are not spread evenly, hence, the sound is either too loud or two soft (even between one level and the next).
Also, you can't navigate the preset channels in both directions (up/down), instead, you must click through the whole cycle (and you can't click fast, cause the unit won't respond).

Coby CS-MP150 Digital Alarm Clock Radio with iPod Docking System Review

Coby CS-MP150 Digital Alarm Clock Radio with iPod Docking System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this alarm clock because it looked like it had a support for the ipod. Reviews for other models say the connection breaks off over time, so I thought this would be a better design. It actually turns out the little back support doesn't come in contact with my ipod. Not a big deal, but slightly disappointing. The other thing is the light display. It is pointed at an angle that makes it tough to read on any surface equal to or higher than my bed. Similarly, the lighting on the time display is horrible. The back - light is way too bright. I have decided to keep the light off and use my old alarm clock for the clock. The ipod functions and alarm works really well so I am not going to return it, but I probably would buy something else if I had a chance to do it over.

Sorry, but this is not a good investment. Even at 40 bucks. Poorly designed and speakers are junk. Offer better speakers and adjust price downward, because fidelity is not good. Unit is just too big for what is does. In my view it has questionable electronics. Has a hum when nothing is coming out of it. May be a suspect power transformer...who knows?. It has an input for MP3, but no line out for perhaps better speakers. No headphone jack. Not very versatile. As far as I'm concerned, this is not a true microsystem. Has Limited capability. Pay the extra and get a SONY.

Coby CX90SVR Digital Pocket AM/FM Radio, Silver Review

Coby CX90SVR Digital Pocket AM/FM Radio, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this mainly to listen to NPR on 93.9 FM during my commutes to work and while at the office working late, which seems to occur far too often. I had also bought the Sony SRF-59. Surprisingly, the Sony SRF-59 had great difficulty picking up the NPR station inside my office building while the Coby CX-90 picks it up loud and clear! So the Sony stays at home and the Coby is the one I take with me.
Ok, first the bad stuff:
The Coby CX-90 I received looks a bit different than the one in the picture. The faceplate on mine is more brownish than black, and the backlighting on mine is amber, not blue. I'd rather have it in blue but, oh well. The fit & finish and overall quality of the exterior plastic casing of the radio isn't top notch, but it's not the worst I've seen either. It's pretty much what you'd expect from the Coby brand name. I'd say the biggest downside of this radio is the relatively short battery life. It uses two 'AAA' batteries and the instruction manual states battery life is 20 hours. I use a set of 750mAh rechargeable batteries and it seems like I'm only getting about 10 hours out of them. Although, my batteries are old so that may be the fault of the batteries not the radio.
Now the good:
Very compact and lightweight. I like the modern styling. It looks more like an MP3 player than an AM/FM radio. I can enjoy listening to the radio and still look modern and hip, instead of like I just time-warped in from the early '80's. The digital tuning is great, no more fiddling with a thumbwheel and guessing if you're on the right frequency. 10 memories per band make it even easier to tune in favorite stations. A handy hold switch locks buttons from being pressed unintentionally. And the best thing about this radio is excellent reception on both AM and FM bands. As I previously mentioned, it outperformed the highly lauded Sony SRF-59. AM reception is very sensitive. I live in NJ but I've been able to tune in 1080 WTIC in Hartford CT (Red Sox), 1210 WPHT in Philadephia PA (Phillies), 1350 WOYK in York PA (Orioles), and 900 CHML in Hamilton ONTARIO (Blue Jays).
By the way, on Coby's own website, they list this radio as having a belt clip and a built-in speaker. To set the record straight, it does not have either of those. I sent an email thru their support page to point this out and have them correct it but so far they haven't.
I am very glad I picked up this radio. This being my first Coby product, I have to say I did not have very high expectations of it performance wise. But for me to say I prefer my Coby over my Sony, I think pretty much sums it all up.
Update on 4/30/2010:
I've had this radio for 1 year and 8 months now and still use it everyday. I've gone through several sets of earbuds, but the radio itself is holding up very well. All of the buttons and switches still work great. The only visible sign of wear is some slight rubbing off of the silver finish around the top and bottom edges of the radio.
I also want to mention that during the time that I've had the Coby, I also tried the Sony SRF-M37V. The advantage of the Sony is that it only uses 1 'AAA' battery, but I think the FM reception is not as good as the Coby. On the Sony, I hear some bleeding of an adjacent station while listening to NPR. I have not experienced that problem with the Coby. Another thing with the Sony that I'm not crazy about is that it breaks up the 10 FM memories into two banks. To switch from one bank to the other, you have to change the band from FM1 to FM2 and then you have to cycle through AM, WB, and TV to go back from FM2 to FM1. I also think the Coby radio fits more comfortably in the hand with it's slim oblong shape, whereas the Sony feels very chunky. So once again this Coby radio has Sony beat.
Coby has corrected the product description on their website and no longer list it as having a belt clip and built-in speaker. But I still wish they would correct the picture to accurately show that it has an amber backlight, not blue.
I like Coby CX90 so much that I even bought a second one, in the black finish. I'm keeping it as a backup unit (not that I expect my first one to break anytime soon!). At the price point of $17 or less, this is a great value for a true digital tuning pocket radio.

Coby HDR700 Portable HD Radio System (Black) Review

Coby HDR700 Portable HD Radio System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the product for a few weeks now. I've noticed that there are differences in performance depending on the situation. I'm not sure if this is due to the product itself or if it is HD radio itself that is to blame. Here is what I've noticed:
1) I primarily listen to AM radio, but when I listen to FM radio, the HDR-700 mostly performs as I expected. There is an easily noticable sound quality difference between the HD and regular radio, but it's not huge. Only stations that are already almost completely static free will come in HD.
2) On my AM radio stations, when the unit locks into the HD signal, the difference is pretty amazing. I can't normally get any AM radio station to be completely static free, but this easily does that and more WHEN IT GETS A HD SIGNAL
There is one major problem. The DC adaptor that powers the until when not in battery mode severely interferes with the radio's reception. Severely. When the unit is plugged into the wall - the reception is so bad that a 100,000 watt station 50 miles from my house does not come in at all. However, as soon as it is on battery power, it works great.

Coby DVD968 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System with 1080p Upconversion, DivX Playback and AM/FM Tuner (Black)
Average Reviews:

Chose this product because of the value (price vs features). Overall I got what I wanted /expected.
Features I was looking for:
-ability to play DivX movies
-HDMI connection
-Surround sound
Bonus features:
-USB Connection
Annoyances:
-vast sound difference between radio and other sources - need dvd player approx level 30, radio level 2. The default setting seems to be level 35, so switching between sources when you turn it on is a pain if you don't turn down the volume
-volume knob on the unit is erratic
-no random selection when playing music (off USB drive)
Installation was easy, works OK with my TV, plays DVD's and videos well, good radio reception.
