Insignia NS-B3112 - Boombox with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 - black Review

Insignia NS-B3112 - Boombox with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 - black

I had my eye on a Sony Boombox with I-Pod dock for some time. I went into Bestbuy to check them out and I found this little gem for $60. I have Insignia cpu speakers and they sound great, but I didn't know they were in the boombox biz. There were 2 different Sony models next to it on the display shelf, one was $80 and the other was $120. This Insignia's sound blew both Sony's away! I couldn't believe it. Both Sony's sounded like my clock radio was going off, terrible, hollow sound. The Insignia has 5 different equalizer modes: Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classical & Flat. The I-pod dock plays my 5th Gen. Nano just fine. It has a CD player and 10 FM/ 10 AM presets. For those of you that have Sony Boomboxes, you need to check out the sound on this Insignia. You won't believe your ears. It also comes with a remote control.

Koda iP915 iStereo Clock Radio Speaker for iPod Review

Koda iP915 iStereo Clock Radio Speaker for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Wal-Mart's around here (NC) have been selling these units on clearance for $50. I'm honestly amazed how good the sound is from this relatively small unit. It's very clear with great range. Even low-range has a nice thump to it.
Now I don't have an ipod right now, I'm just using the AUX input. However, this device can apparently control any ipod avaliable, including ipod Videos. Yes, it's got TV out.
Build quality is actually very good. It's rather heavy and everything feels very tight. The three buttons (power, volume up and down) all have a satisfying click to them. I wish I could say the same about the credit card remote (which is required for most features) but it gets the job done.
The display is just a basic, inverted LCD. The clock always displays, but also is stuck in 24-hour mode. To the right shows the station or volume. That's about it; perhaps more avaliable when an ipod is being used, but again, I don't have one.
All in all, highly recommended!

iHome iH27 Portable Alarm Clock for iPod (Black) Review

iHome iH27 Portable Alarm Clock for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't imagine what they were thinking when they designed this thing.
Here's the problem. If you have an ipod in the unit you cannot wake up to the buzzer, only the ipod. If you go to sleep with the ipod on, playing some mellow music at low volume, this is what you will hear for your morning alarm. It's not going to wake you. You cannot use the buzzer for an alarm unless you take the ipod out. What's the point of having it?
Mine is going back.

Click Here to see more reviews about: iHome iH27 Portable Alarm Clock for iPod (Black)

Perfect for the busy traveler, this portable iPod alarm clock speaker system lets you sleep or wake to your favorite iPod tunes or buzzer, or just enjoy a little music while your iPod charges. With a lock feature to maintain settings, battery or AC power, and a protective carrying case, it lets you take some room-filling sound nearly anywhere.

Charge and Play Your iPod Anywhere Play back your favorite tunes at home or while traveling with the iH27. While your iPod is docked, it receives a charge (when on AC power), so when you're ready to go, so is your iPod.

The iH27 power adapter is able to handle input voltage from 100 to 240 VA, so it'll work overseas with the right plug adapters. And because the iH27 is powered by either AC or four AA batteries (not included), you can enjoy music with or without an outlet. A handy carrying case is also included to keep the device safe and sound while in transit, whether it's a business trip or a barbecue.

Sleep or Wake to Your iPod The iH27 lets you wake to your docked iPod (or the buzzer alarm for you masochists). A gradual alarm feature gently raises the alarm volume, so as not to jar you out of sleep. You can also dim the display, with high, medium, low, and off settings.

The iH27 also has a sure alarm feature so the buzzer alarm will still sound in the event of power failure, if backup battery is installed.

And of course, there's a snooze button for grabbing a few more minutes of slumber and a sleep mode for falling asleep to your favorite tunes or podcasts.

Big Sound in a Small Package iHome's Reson8 technology, with through-body ported speaker chambers, gives the iH27's four speakers better response characteristics for superior stereo sound. In addition, SRS WOW technology is designed to provide a broader audio image with enhanced low-range and mid-range sound reproduction, in order to bring added life to compressed MP3 files.

Auxiliary Input and A/V Output Use the iH27's auxiliary input to connect external devices such as MP3 or CD players. You can also send the audio and/or video from the dock's A/V out to a television or stereo, for enjoying your iPod content on a larger scale.

What's in the Box iH27 main unit, AC adapter, iPod dock inserts, auxiliary cable, and user's manual.

iLive IC2807 Travel Speaker and Alarm Clock with Remote Control, Carrying Bag, and iPod Dock (Black) Review

iLive IC2807 Travel Speaker and Alarm Clock with Remote Control, Carrying Bag, and iPod Dock (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This ipod speaker system could have been great, except for its one big flaw. That one flaw being the alarm on this clock goes from what ever volume setting you have it at to max volume in about 4 seconds. The max volume is VERY loud. It more or less renders the alarm function useless in my opinion. 1 way around this problem is to use the alarm setting on the ipod itself and make sure you have the ilive set to the ipod setting before going to sleep. This way, the ipod alarm will activate and still play through the speakers. Although, this does eliminate the purpose of having an alarm on the speakers themselves.
Anyways, other than that, the best thing about this system is its remote. While most remotes allow you to change tracks, volume and turn the system on and off, this one allows complete control of the ipod. You can change tracks, change albums, change playlists and highlight tracks as if scrolling through the click wheel. I wish all remotes were this useful. Its also quiet compact and sounds pretty decent for 70 dollar speakers. Plus this thing can run off 4 AA batteries, which makes it nice for tailgates or parties.
I would say if you already have an alarm clock and want a decent set of portable speakers, pick this one up. most other systems in its price range dont offer the remote thats as useful as this one.

An ideal unit for iPod listeners on the go, the iLive IC2807BLK speaker system is compact and easy to carry, with a diminutive housing that measures only 9.5 by 1.25 by 5.75 inches (W x H x D) when folded. As a result, you can take the system just about anywhere, from the backyard to the park to the campsite. The unit is equipped with an integrated iPod docking station that supports all iPods with 30-pin dock connectors, including the iPod 3G, iPod 4G (click wheel), iPod photo 4G, iPod video 5G/5.5G, iPod mini, and iPod nano 1G and 2G. More importantly, the unit produces a bigger sound than expected thanks to the front-firing, acoustically calibrated speakers. Simply pop your iPod into the dock and you'll receive crisp, satisfying sound wherever you go.
The IC2807BLK offers more than just an iPod dock, however. The system also sports a backlit LCD display with a digital clock and a built-in alarm, so you can wake up to your iPod while traveling. The 3.5 mm auxiliary input, meanwhile, lets you connect other audio players to the speakers, including an iPod shuffle, MP3 player, or portable CD player. Other details include a mini-USB jack for PC communication (includes USB cable); A/V output jacks for connecting an iPod photo or video to a TV; a full-function remote control (includes battery); and a bonus carrying pouch for easy transport. Cue Acoustics Model r1 Table Radio with iPhone/iPod Dock and Dual Alarms (Black) Review

Cue Acoustics Model r1 Table Radio with iPhone/iPod Dock and Dual Alarms (Black)
Average Reviews:

Not your high-school clock radio.
This tabletop "clock radio" is a must-have for NPR junkies with small apartments! I listen to the radio all the time, and my stereo has good speakers but I can only set up two sets, which covers half the 600-square-foot apartment. I like to have NPR available in all rooms, so I typically use a clock radio as my alarm clock. After years of using a crappy-sounding old-school clock radio, I couldn't resist splurging on the Cue Aucoustics model r1 radio ("the Cue Radio"). It's a gorgeous, sleek little thing with whopping sound. It's small enough to fit on my tiny nightstand and looks nice enough to even be in the living room. I find myself listening to it even when I'm in other rooms, actually, because the sound is good enough and loud enough that if I'm in the middle of something I forget to switch to my real stereo. I used to hate the red glaring numbers showing the time on my old radio; the Cue has a soothing blue display that you can set to dim at night (one of my favorite features). The reception is better than any other radio I've used--I can get a bunch of stations I've never received well, and the signal status bar that comes up automatically while you're tuning is a nice confirmation of how well the station is
coming in. Setup is easy (the instruction booklet looks nice and was laid out such that I actually read it)--I could give this to my parents, for instance, and they would be able to readily suss out all the features. Best yet, it doubles as an iPod dock and also can be used as a receiver for my other mp3 players or my Pandora playlists
(the Cue speakers are way better than my laptop's), and its small size makes it easy to flip around, plug in an auxiliary cable, and enjoy the great sound--which you can control with the tiny remote that comes with it. Maybe future models could have wireless capability--but I'm pretty happy that's all I am left wanting with this snazzy little clock radio!

Sight The Cue Radio r1's clean contemporary design is approachable and unobtrusive in any environment, yet its contemporary lines carry the distinctive look of a well-designed, high-quality product. At only 10.5-inches wide, 6.5-inches deep and 4.25-inches high, it fits easily on your nightstand, countertop, or bookshelf. Cue's one-cord system has no ungainly antenna and no ugly wall wart. A clear and functional display plus integrated touch sensors make navigation very intuitive.
SoundSimply put, the r1 is a small product with big sound. Audio engineering principals include:- Custom CueSonic speaker with a 3.5" high-power woofer/mid-range and a 3/4" silk-dome tweeter- Powerful bi-amplified sound- Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to optimize speaker response- Sonic AutoBalanceTM optimizes sound based on volume setting- 24 radio presets for rapid tuning to your favorite stations- 5 pre-programmed acoustic controls provide distinct sound profiles for individual preferences - High-performance modular AM/FM tuners for hi-fidelity reception- Rear panel mounted 1/8" auxiliary input allows for additional sound sources

Yamaha TSX-70BR Desktop Audio System for iPod/iPhone (Brown) Review

Yamaha TSX-70BR Desktop Audio System for iPod/iPhone (Brown)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a 35 year old Zenith clock radio. I told myself that someday, if this clock radio ever died, I will spoil myself and buy a Bose wave radio to replace it. Alas, that day has arrived. I went online to order my Bose wave, and learned that some IDIOT at Bose had decided it would be a good idea to eliminate all the control buttons from the unit, and control everything from a tiny little remote! This does not make the wave a good choice for use as a bedside alarm clock. Imagine trying to find which microscopic button to push to silence the alarm while you are half asleep! Nice going Bose - you just lost a sale!
Thus began my search for a replacement. I did not find anything at the local big box stores that did not look and sound cheap. Another big factor for me was the brightness of the display. Most are too bright for me - even with a dimmer function. I found this Yamaha on Amazon, and seemed a viable alternative to the Bose, so I decided to take a chance and order it. The only hesitation I had was that I could not determine if this unit had a battery back-up for the clock. I even went to Yamaha's website for this info, but could not find it there either. Apparently, there is some kind of backup system, as the instructions state the time information will be lost if unplugged for more than one week. It must have an internal capacitor of some sort - I'm guessing.
The sound is impressive! I do not own an Ipod, but I would imagine the sound quality would be even better from that source than that of the radio. It is hard to imagine the sound quality that comes out of such a small package. My wife made the comment that it sounds better than the stereo we also have in the bedroom! This unit is much smaller than I imagined, but this is a good thing. It does not take up a lot of space on my nightstand. The display brightness is adjustable, and is perfect for me on the lowest setting. It has an automatic setting that self adjusts to ambient room light, and is very legible at all settings.
Overall, I am very pleased and impressed with this system. I hope it serves me as well as my old Zenith did.

iHome iA5 App-Enhanced Alarm Clock Speaker System for iPod and iPhone (Black) Review

iHome iA5 App-Enhanced Alarm Clock Speaker System for iPod and iPhone (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for an alarm clock/charger for my iPhone and finally settled on this one. Partly intrigued by the fact it works in conjunction with an app, I wanted to see how the full package would operate.
It's a little bigger in person than I expected it to be so I might have preferred a smaller device, but that's not a deal breaker. The only other complaint I have is that when the device is working with the app, there's a large button on the top that turns on and emits a rather bright night light that I wish I had the option to turn off. It's not so bright as to keep me awake, but I happen to like a dark room when I sleep, so it's more light than I'm used to. Still, not a deal breaker and I'm thinking about just putting a sticker on top of it or something to dim it down.
The speaker gives out good sound quality, and you can manually control the clock's brightness even to where you can turn the display of completely if you prefer. The app is a nice touch and has some cool features like customizing the music/sounds you sleep and wake-up to, plus about as many alarm options as you want to set.
The buttons on the front are easy to manage and most of the clock's overall management (setting of the time, etc.) is done through the iPhone app, but there are buttons on the back that allow you to manage the clock that way as well.
One thing I was worried about was whether it would work with my iPhone's case on since I've read about other devices that don't fit the phone if you have a case on it. Thankfully this one fits just fine (I have an ifrogz case).
All in all, I'm happy with it.

Speakal iPig 2.1 Stereo iPod Docking Station with 5 Speakers - Limited Edition (Black) Review

Speakal iPig 2.1 Stereo iPod Docking Station with 5 Speakers - Limited Edition (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only drawback is the cutesy appearance which makes this unit look more like a toy than a serious compact sized all in one IPOD dock.
Having had 4 Harmon Kardon Go+Play and being very familier with the HK sound, I consider this a baby Harmon Kardon Go+Play. It doesn't have the same maximum volume but it does get respectably loud with true 24 watts and audio extension down to 60 hz. VERY clear, present and strong. A super unit that's only about 6.3 inches in diameter, making for the best sounding small all in one unit I have ever heard.
Incidentally, I travel with the highly regarded larger Boomtube unit reviewed on Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/Virgin-VS2100-Boomtube-Portable-Speaker/dp/B000ARIT5G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1225204410&sr=8-3
The IPIG walls ALL OVER the Boomtube. No comparison- much better frequency response, more presence, clarity, deeper bass, and louder. The only drawback is that this is too small to give stereo separation. This is going to be my new travel music unit. I tested it with wireless microphone and it works great also as an amplification system good enough for speaking to 100 people.

Memorex MI2601P TagAlong Portable Boombox for iPod and iPhone (White) Review

Memorex MI2601P TagAlong Portable Boombox for iPod and iPhone (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a handy little portable that does exactly as advertised. For the mid-price, the sound is OKAY, frankly, if you want great sound, save up the several hundred dollars and buy a Bose. What you get here is something akin to a table radio with a spot for your I-Pod. I have an I-pod classic and a Nano (2009 model) and they both get into the dock easily. The volume is adjustable; despite the other reviews here, I am having no sound/volume problems. So far, I have used this as a desk player and at an event where I just wanted some music as I sat around with people passing by. The Tag-along is VERY lightweight, making it easy to cart around. Overall, a satisfactory music maker if you don't get your expectations too high.

Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus Omnidirectional Speaker Dock for iPod and iPhone Review

Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus Omnidirectional Speaker Dock for iPod and iPhone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unfortunately this product, while being another example of Logitech's great quality, finds itself in the awkward position of being a less enticing version of other Logitech Products that better specialize in aspects of the Pure-Fi Express Plus' feature set. The product is a good, not great performer, it's portable, and it features an alarm clock, but since Logitech has other iPod docking products that either perform better, are more portable, or are better alarm clocks, I'd recommend the alternatives first.
As far as performance goes, the Pure-Fi Express Plus didn't provide the same quality output as my set of standalone speakers with subwoofer, but it holds its weight. Logitech's Pure-Fi Dream Speaker might be a better alternative if you're looking for higher quality output (and AM/FM radio).
For portability, the Pure-Fi Express Plus is certainly nice, compact, and simple. In fact, it's a little smaller than expected (Logitech uses a 2nd generation Nano in many of the product photos which makes the Pure-Fi Express look bigger than it is). If you're primarily interested in portability, however, the even more portable, rechargeable Logitech Rechargeable Speaker S315i might be a better choice.
For the alarm clock functionality, the Pure-Fi Express Plus gets the job done, but it just has a buzzer (it won't let you wake up to your iPod), it doesn't feature dual alarms, and the snooze button doubles as the volume dial which doubles as the power button. Fortunately, another Logitech product, the similarly priced Pure-Fi Anytime Premium Alarm Clock, has all the features you'd expect of a full-featured alarm clock, if that's what you're after.
The only compelling advantage the Pure-Fi Express Plus has over its alternatives is the omnidirectional speaker which broadcasts in 360°. That makes it worth considering if you really need an iPod dock for a coffee table in the middle of a room, but otherwise I'd buy the other Logitech alternatives before this unit.
Overall, I wouldn't say the Pure-Fi Express Plus is a bad choice, necessarily. I just wouldn't call it as good of a choice as the other products mentioned. I'd give the Pure-Fi Express Plus an unenthusiastic recommendation, but only three stars because of its more specialized, and arguably more appealing, sister products.

Dual XML8100 AM/FM Mechless Receiver with iPod Dock, BT Ready, SWI, iPlug, Remote (Black) Review

Dual XML8100 AM/FM Mechless Receiver with iPod Dock, BT Ready, SWI, iPlug, Remote (Black)
Average Reviews:

Most of the features of this unit are thoughtful and work well. When the face is closed, you have access to all the unit controls. Additionally, the front face swings open to present an iPod dock and a second set of controls that handle most of the unit's functions. The iPod dock is nice and sturdy; my iPod Classic fits in it better than it does inside a Bose Sounddock. It has an aux input and programmable subwoofer/rear output, as well as a spare preamp output.
The EQ settings are not as detailed as I would like, but they aren't bad. There's bass and treble settings, no mid. There is also no built-in crossover, which I would prefer to see in any head unit with a dedicated subwoofer out, but again, for the price, this is to be expected.
The big fault, however, is in the programming.
One of the nice touches on this device is that you can set the EQ separately for each input - radio, aux, iPod, or bluetooth. However, unless an iPod is set in the dock, the iPod mode does not appear in the audio settings menu, so you can't adjust the EQ for it that way. And the kicker? When an iPod IS docked, there is no way to access the audio settings menu; the only button for that is on the front panel, which does not function when the faceplate is open to allow an iPod to dock. Effectively, it is impossible to adjust the EQ for the iPod, with the factory radio.
I've figured out one workaround; if you purchase a dock-extender cable, you can plug in an iPod, and then close the front panel. Alternatively, you can set your iPod into the dock, then plug the aux cable into it and basically use it in aux mode - you'll have the ability to change the EQ, and your iPod will stay charged, however you won't be able to use the remote to control the iPod.
EDIT Added 2/20/11: As many commenters have now pointed out, you can adjust the EQ using the remote control when the iPod is docked. Press the Audio Settings button on the remote to cycle through each EQ setting, and use the volume buttons to adjust that setting up and down. I still consider this a crappy solution to a problem that should have been caught in testing, but I also consider it way too minor for me to buy a different head unit. I still like this one quite a lot, more than a year after first installing it.

Cambridge SoundWorks i525 AM/FM Table Radio with iPod Dock Review

Cambridge SoundWorks i525 AM/FM Table Radio with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I understand this radio sold for as high as $200 and at that price, one might be disappointed. Not because the sound isn't phenomenal for it's size, but because most $200 table top radios will have a sub-woofer, which the i525 does not.
But for $99, this radio exceeded my expectations. (and frankly, as a bedside music system, I'm not looking for a high volume performer. Don't get me wrong, the sound quality on this radio is very full. I'm never thinking, "wish it had a sub-woofer")
Three things set this radio apart: 1.) ipod interface is great. (my iPod is 32 GB 3rd gen touch) The i525 produces the kind of impressively rich, clean audio from an iPod one typically expects from much more expensive audio systems w/o frills! CSW attributes this superior iPod sound reproduction to something they call X-Fi Crystalizer technology, "restoring the crisp treble and bass punch erased by audio compressor processing employed to create MP3..." . All I know is "Marky likes it, and it enhances FM too".
2.) CSW has developed a reputation for audio systems with impossibly good sound given their small footprints, and i525 is no exception. Certainly, audio preference has a subjective element, yet no one should be able to quibble with tonal clarity through out the range. One is startled by the lack of any mushiness, and taut bass reproduction. As a bedside music system, it produces clear bass, mid-range and treble far beyond most clock radios. 3.) FM reception is the best I've experienced! FM reception is clean, clear and distortion free. I recently returned the AR Art1, possessing a much larger external antenna, however the reception fidelity was no where near the i525.
What about the alarm clock function? Well, to be honest, I've not set the alarm. However, even if the alarm function is "behind the curve" as some professional and reviews on this site have said, my demands are not great in this area. I simply need an alarm to wake me up reliably. HOWEVER, I will complain about no battery back-up. There's an internal power cell storing 10 mins of power, saving settings---well, for 10 mins of power interruption. That's not good enough. Battery backup should be " de rigueur" for clock radios.

Enjoy a cool, crisp sound while adding to your bedroom's laid-back feel withthe SpeckTone Retro iPod speaker system from Speck Products. The system's primaryappeal stems from its sleek and stylish mod design, which consists of a high-glosslacquered black wood cabinet, a backlit "green glow" volume knob, and a housing thatlooks straight out of a '50s hipster catalog. But there's far more to the Retro system thanlooks, as it also includes a built-in iPod docking station that accepts virtually all"dockable" iPods, including the iPod 4G, iPod video, iPod photo, iPod mini, and iPodnano. As a result, you can charge and play your iPod at the same time. The system'sauxiliary input, meanwhile, works with older iPods and other digital media players, including personal CD players, MP3 players, and any other device with a 3.5 mmheadphone jack.
Audio-wise, the Retro boasts analog circuitry, a pair of 3-inch drivers, and a 4-inchbottom subwoofer that combine to deliver a rich, dynamic sound with uncompromisingquality. Other details include the ability to accommodate many iPod protective cases, atotal power output of 28 watts, and a set of angled legs with soft rubber strips toprevent slipping. An ideal tabletop system for the bedroom, office, or kitchen, theSpeckTone Retro measures 14 by 5 by 6.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90- day warranty.

iHome iP87 Dual Alarm Clock Radio with AM/FM Presets and Dock for iPhone and iPod with Remote (Black) Review

iHome iP87 Dual Alarm Clock Radio with AM/FM Presets and Dock for iPhone and iPod with Remote (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a mostly very well thought out clock radio. I list below my LIKES and DISLIKES, so that you can more easily determine if this would be a good purchase for you:
LIKES:
* It charges your Ipod
* The alarm can be set to wake you up to your Ipod music (you create a Playlist on your Ipod called "iHome" with whatever song(s) you want; then when setting the alarm, you choose the option to wake to playlist)
* The alarm is a gradual alarm. Whether you choose to wake to a buzzer, iPod, radio, etc., the sound of the alarm starts gradually, before it comes on too loud. This is a nicer way to wake up, I think
* The digital display is very bright on its brightest setting. This can be useful as a nightlight in your room. However, if the radio is close to your bed, the brightness can easily be adjusted lower by pressing the "snooze" button until you find your desired brightness
* The sound quality is fine. Obviously, it cannot match full-size speakers, and for the price, it is not going to be quite as solid as similar sized radios which cost twice as much (or more). But, for this attractive price, the sound quality is fine, acceptable, etc.!
* It can be programmed to only way on the 5 weekdays, 2 weekend days or all 7 days. Although, as noted below, this may not be working correctly, or maybe I am missing a setting
* The price is very competitive for the features you receive on this radio
DISLIKES:
* Setting the alarm requires spinning a wheel-like dial. If you set different times regularly, and especially if those different times are far apart from each other, spinning the dial can be troublesome.
* Even though you are supposed to be able to set it for "5 days" (meaning it should only wake you M-F), I cannot seem to make that work properly. So, I work around this by telling it to wake me all 7 days, and on the weekends when my wake up schedule is different, I simply change the wake up time.
SUMMARY:
The LIKES greatly outweight the DISLIKES. This is a great iPod clock radio.
