(More customer reviews)The Wal-Mart's around here (NC) have been selling these units on clearance for $50. I'm honestly amazed how good the sound is from this relatively small unit. It's very clear with great range. Even low-range has a nice thump to it.
Now I don't have an ipod right now, I'm just using the AUX input. However, this device can apparently control any ipod avaliable, including ipod Videos. Yes, it's got TV out.
Build quality is actually very good. It's rather heavy and everything feels very tight. The three buttons (power, volume up and down) all have a satisfying click to them. I wish I could say the same about the credit card remote (which is required for most features) but it gets the job done.
The display is just a basic, inverted LCD. The clock always displays, but also is stuck in 24-hour mode. To the right shows the station or volume. That's about it; perhaps more avaliable when an ipod is being used, but again, I don't have one.
All in all, highly recommended!

That one flaw being the alarm on this clock goes from what ever volume setting you have it at to max volume in about 4 seconds. The max volume is VERY loud. It more or less renders the alarm function useless in my opinion. 1 way around this problem is to use the alarm setting on the ipod itself and make sure you have the ilive set to the ipod setting before going to sleep. This way, the ipod alarm will activate and still play through the speakers. Although, this does eliminate the purpose of having an alarm on the speakers themselves.
Anyways, other than that, the best thing about this system is its remote. While most remotes allow you to change tracks, volume and turn the system on and off, this one allows complete control of the ipod. You can change tracks, change albums, change playlists and highlight tracks as if scrolling through the click wheel. I wish all remotes were this useful. Its also quiet compact and sounds pretty decent for 70 dollar speakers. Plus this thing can run off 4 AA batteries, which makes it nice for tailgates or parties.
I would say if you already have an alarm clock and want a decent set of portable speakers, pick this one up. most other systems in its price range dont offer the remote thats as useful as this one.

Yamaha TSX-70BR Desktop Audio System for iPod/iPhone (Brown) Review

(More customer reviews)I have a 35 year old Zenith clock radio. I told myself that someday, if this clock radio ever died, I will spoil myself and buy a Bose wave radio to replace it. Alas, that day has arrived. I went online to order my Bose wave, and learned that some IDIOT at Bose had decided it would be a good idea to eliminate all the control buttons from the unit, and control everything from a tiny little remote! This does not make the wave a good choice for use as a bedside alarm clock. Imagine trying to find which microscopic button to push to silence the alarm while you are half asleep! Nice going Bose - you just lost a sale!
Thus began my search for a replacement. I did not find anything at the local big box stores that did not look and sound cheap. Another big factor for me was the brightness of the display. Most are too bright for me - even with a dimmer function. I found this Yamaha on Amazon, and seemed a viable alternative to the Bose, so I decided to take a chance and order it. The only hesitation I had was that I could not determine if this unit had a battery back-up for the clock. I even went to Yamaha's website for this info, but could not find it there either. Apparently, there is some kind of backup system, as the instructions state the time information will be lost if unplugged for more than one week. It must have an internal capacitor of some sort - I'm guessing.
The sound is impressive! I do not own an Ipod, but I would imagine the sound quality would be even better from that source than that of the radio. It is hard to imagine the sound quality that comes out of such a small package. My wife made the comment that it sounds better than the stereo we also have in the bedroom! This unit is much smaller than I imagined, but this is a good thing. It does not take up a lot of space on my nightstand. The display brightness is adjustable, and is perfect for me on the lowest setting. It has an automatic setting that self adjusts to ambient room light, and is very legible at all settings.
Overall, I am very pleased and impressed with this system. I hope it serves me as well as my old Zenith did.

Having had 4 Harmon Kardon Go+Play and being very familier with the HK sound, I consider this a baby Harmon Kardon Go+Play. It doesn't have the same maximum volume but it does get respectably loud with true 24 watts and audio extension down to 60 hz. VERY clear, present and strong. A super unit that's only about 6.3 inches in diameter, making for the best sounding small all in one unit I have ever heard.

The IPIG walls ALL OVER the Boomtube. No comparison- much better frequency response, more presence, clarity, deeper bass, and louder. The only drawback is that this is too small to give stereo separation. This is going to be my new travel music unit. I tested it with wireless microphone and it works great also as an amplification system good enough for speaking to 100 people.

Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus Omnidirectional Speaker Dock for iPod and iPhone Review

(More customer reviews)Unfortunately this product, while being another example of Logitech's great quality, finds itself in the awkward position of being a less enticing version of other Logitech Products that better specialize in aspects of the Pure-Fi Express Plus' feature set. The product is a good, not great performer, it's portable, and it features an alarm clock, but since Logitech has other iPod docking products that either perform better, are more portable, or are better alarm clocks, I'd recommend the alternatives first.
As far as performance goes, the Pure-Fi Express Plus didn't provide the same quality output as my set of standalone speakers with subwoofer, but it holds its weight. Logitech's Pure-Fi Dream Speaker might be a better alternative if you're looking for higher quality output (and AM/FM radio).
For portability, the Pure-Fi Express Plus is certainly nice, compact, and simple. In fact, it's a little smaller than expected (Logitech uses a 2nd generation Nano in many of the product photos which makes the Pure-Fi Express look bigger than it is). If you're primarily interested in portability, however, the even more portable, rechargeable Logitech Rechargeable Speaker S315i might be a better choice.
For the alarm clock functionality, the Pure-Fi Express Plus gets the job done, but it just has a buzzer (it won't let you wake up to your iPod), it doesn't feature dual alarms, and the snooze button doubles as the volume dial which doubles as the power button. Fortunately, another Logitech product, the similarly priced Pure-Fi Anytime Premium Alarm Clock, has all the features you'd expect of a full-featured alarm clock, if that's what you're after.
The only compelling advantage the Pure-Fi Express Plus has over its alternatives is the omnidirectional speaker which broadcasts in 360°. That makes it worth considering if you really need an iPod dock for a coffee table in the middle of a room, but otherwise I'd buy the other Logitech alternatives before this unit.
Overall, I wouldn't say the Pure-Fi Express Plus is a bad choice, necessarily. I just wouldn't call it as good of a choice as the other products mentioned. I'd give the Pure-Fi Express Plus an unenthusiastic recommendation, but only three stars because of its more specialized, and arguably more appealing, sister products.

iHome iH52 Bookshelf System with AM/FM Radio and Dock for iPod (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought mine at Target. I put by iPod in the display model in the store, hit "play" and man...what a sound! No hiss, awsome bass. (Perhaps some other reviewers should take theirs back while they can and request an exchange.) With sound this good, I couldn't justify paying $150 more for the Apple HiFi.
We brought it home (paid $199 in the store) and my 12-year-old was able to direct installation with no difficulty. Yes, there ARE lots of cables, but they are logical, color coded and really not difficult to manage. You'll need a phillps or nut driver to attach the FM antenna.
It is designed for a bookshelf, but we set it up with the subwoofer (that big, heavy speaker mentioned in another review) under the bed and the speakers on opposite nightstands.
Sound is wonderful, the remote works perfectly...very intuitive. We did have to refer to the manual to set the clock, but that made sense first time round with the directions.
Only one "I wish"....I wish it had an alarm clock. And I wish I'd known they come in white. I'd have looked elsewhere for one to match my iPod. (Which is a 30G video model. Adapters for all the models were included. Check the package before you buy, mates.)

(More customer reviews)All in all, this is a great unit. It combines ipod docking station, radio with digital tuner and clock radio all together. Before I bought this, the potentially negative things I wish I had known are the following:
- There are not a lot of buttons so it can be complicated to execute simple tasks. For example, to activate the alarm you have to scroll through all of the various alarm settings - there is no simple on/off button for the alarm.
- The remote control is really small. I worry that it will be lost or I'll fall asleep with it in bed and never find it in the sheets. It also takes a really tiny battery - kind of a large watch battery. It's too new for me to comment on whether the battery life is good.
- The remote snooze button is a really good feature if you don't want your docking station right next to your bed. Again, it has a small battery.
- It's kind of hard to read the time on the display - tougher than would be the case for a more traditional clock radio. And it's impossible if you (like me) have bought this unit because the remote snooze button allows you to keep the docking station in a more convenient place than beside the bed.
- There are only 4 radio presets and I think you can scroll through the presets only with the remote control (not the main unit).
- Sound quality is fine. Not as good as the Bose docking station but about what you would expect from a decent clock radio.
- There are only three volume settings for the alarm - low, medium and loud. I tried medium and it was quite loud so I've had to go with low. Fortunately, low is adquately loud, but you should know that there aren't a ton of volume choices to suit all tastes.
Although I really like having the features of this item, because of it is inconvenient to make on the fly changes to alarm settings and because of the difficulty reading the display I haven't got rid of my old clock radio (which I use just to read the time and if I want to set a one-off alarm).
Sorry for the long review, but this is the info I would have like to have known before making my purchase decision. I likely still would have picked this item, but with my eyes more open.

One caution: most iPod dock-speakers can be quite "fussy" about which iPod models they choose to charge and play or simply play and not charge. Check on the return policy of the product, especially if it's not coming directly from Amazon, and be sure to test it frequently and thoroughly for the first couple of weeks. It's not entirely clear what distinguishes the newer Micro II from this 2008 model, but I would assume that the newer model has been minimally tweaked to cover some newer players. Also, although Amazon's prices are among the most reasonable anywhere, some bargains can occasionally be found in warranteed refurb models through the JBL store (located on that "other" big site). Finally, in answer to the purists who find any discussion of speakers used to play MP3 files without merit, there are many degrees of compression in MP3 files, with 128 kbps by no means the "norm." Moreover, even at 128 kbps the differences in the quality of sound is often as dramatic as night and day among some of these little overachievers.]
Presently this JBL On Stage Micro is going for 60% below the price of any other color, making it a no-brainer pick-up among docking speakers normally selling on Amazon for $100 or slightly more. JBL is a stylish, quality brand manufactured by Harmon International--durable, dependable, crisp-sounding. Despite the sharply divided reviews, the sound quality of virtually all speakers in the $80-$150 range is the same, with minor variations subject to differences in taste. I've found popular rechargeable units such as those made by Altec and Logitech to be unstable--sometimes changing iPod models will throw them off completely, requiring a reset with no guarantee of a fix. The JBL Micro, on the other hand, can be depended upon to deliver with either its AC connection or AA non-recharging alkalines.
Best disregard low-end merchandise--iLuv, GPX, Colby, J-Win and, unless you're looking for a clock radio, iHome. The sound is best described as "plastic-like," clearly inferior to a monaural speaker such as that of a Tivoli, Sangean, or Boston Acoustics radio. If you want a substantially improved system, one that goes beyond merely "covering" the entire frequency range to "reproducing" the sounds of the actual instruments, think more in the $200-300 range and look for a Klipsch iGroove, Athena iVoice, or Bose Sound Dock (the drawback--they're not for portable, battery use).
[In response to some misleading reviews: the JBL Micro has proven one of the more durable systems in its price range, and it comes with exceptionally smart packaging (form-fitting, padded storage bag with places for the adapter, remote and cord), guaranteed to make a great impression even before it's been used. Finally, it indeed DOES have a volume control--the left button for softer; the right for louder. Bass is admittedly weaker than some models in this range, but treble is superior and power is ample. If you hear cabinet "rattling," back off on the volume of your source; if you get a loud "hum," simply do an off-on reset. And hang on to the tiny remote (or learn how to live without it). Harmon's answer to my question about a replacement is usually, "It's out of stock."

(More customer reviews)I was looking for speakers and something to keep my iPod charged while I listened to it at work and saw this advertised at Kohl's. Checked Amazon and found it for less (and in black). Most iPod boomboxes get poor reception but this one does better than most I have seen. I have the iLuv iPod boombox for use at home but wanted something a little smaller for work. Radio gets suprisingly clear reception (usually a problem in offices) and the sound is good. Defintely not useful for a party but if you want something inexpensve, portable, with good sound and an AM/FM radio, this gets the job done. My only complaint is that the LED display can be hard to see at an angle, but that is a minor issue.

(More customer reviews)When I saw this product on the AR web site, I was immediately interested because it was a TABLE RADIO, for goodness sakes, with tube technology. I'm an audiophile and I currently own an integrated amp with tubes, and absolutely love the sound it creates. I am extremely pleased with the performance of this radio; it BLOWS AWAY the silly Bose Wave for half the price, and an iPod dock with two additional inputs to boot. The tuner is the best I've seen in years, and the remote is nice. The only caution is that the amplifier section is so powerful that it can overdrive the little speakers at high volumes creating distortion, but that occurs at the point where it's really loud. If you want a nice table radio with versatile, usable features and great sound, this is definitely it!

I just plugged it all in, changed the setting on my computer and voila - wireless sound. I would recommend this to anyone looking to rid themselves of wires attached to their computer. The only bad thing that I can come up with was that the instructions were a little confusing which may be why that one guy kept trying to sync his up by pressing the buttons on each device. I never did that; it was plug and play almost instantly. Works great! Great price.
