2. Waaaaaay too complicated to set things. This is one of those, "We're only going to give you 10 buttons, so to set an alarm, you have to hit this button, then hit that button 4 times, then hit a third button. Complete pain in the neck to get to simple features. I might put up with that, but if you're the sort of person who is frustrated by utterly mysterious ergonomics, be aware, this unit is the anti-iPhone.
3. The system uses an automated CD insert -- you slide the CD into the front of the unit and a little motorized gripper pulls it in or pushes it out when you hit eject. After two weeks, mine stopped working. If I want to hear The Goldberg Variations, it's great, but I was sort of thinking that it would play lots of DIFFERENT CDs, not just the one I put in a week ago!
Bottom line: I'm returning the unit with my CD of the Goldberg Variations still inside it, because I can't get the furshlugginer thing out. I figure if it starts eating CDs in 2 weeks, there's not much hope for this as a long term addition to the house.

(More customer reviews)When I saw this product on the AR web site, I was immediately interested because it was a TABLE RADIO, for goodness sakes, with tube technology. I'm an audiophile and I currently own an integrated amp with tubes, and absolutely love the sound it creates. I am extremely pleased with the performance of this radio; it BLOWS AWAY the silly Bose Wave for half the price, and an iPod dock with two additional inputs to boot. The tuner is the best I've seen in years, and the remote is nice. The only caution is that the amplifier section is so powerful that it can overdrive the little speakers at high volumes creating distortion, but that occurs at the point where it's really loud. If you want a nice table radio with versatile, usable features and great sound, this is definitely it!

I think that this is a really fine clock radio. It has the two features that are important for me: 1) a standard, external FM antenna coax connection and 2) a good digital tuner. The sound is good, too.
As shipped, when you have the radio turned on, the radio station frequency (not the time) shows on the display. But you can change it by going to the "INFO" option, so that you see the time while the radio is on.
The display is bright and I cover it at night, but that is minor.

Eton E10 AM/FM Shortwave Radio Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a high quality portable that I could use at work and that was light enough that I could carry around with me while walking.
I have had the E10 for about two weeks and am very pleased with it thus far. FM reception is very good -- it matches my Sangean ATS 818 easily. AM reception is also good (altough reception is compromised at work- but this is true of any radio). Shortwave is not quite to the same level as my Sangean but it still very good especially for the price and size. Sound is surprisingly good for the size of the speaker.
My biggest complaint with the radio is the small size of the buttons and controls. Even as small as the radio is, it is clear that they could have designed it with larger and more well spaced buttons.
The E10 comes with rechargeable NIMH batteries, the only drawback is that they only charge when the radio is OFF. The radio will work with standard AA batteries as well. An AC adaptor/charger is included. It also comes with ear buds (For FM Stereo) and a windup shortwave antenna. A carrying case is included (I use mine everyday).
If you like memory presets, you will love this radio. It has 500! (so far I have used only about 25 of them!).

The Sound 100 iPod Dock comes in black and white. The radio only version adds other colors including silver, blue and red. I've had the white one for a while and I've been pretty happy with it. This Black Etón Sound 100 iPod Dock is very similar, but loses points for the non-black speaker face. As a stand-alone radio this device is average. But the stellar iPod dock integration makes this unit a cut above and one you must consider.
Without the iPod dock the unit ranges from being $30 to $50 less than this model. I don't believe it's worth getting this unit without the iPod dock. Still, they have been having periodic sales for the stand-alone model in the $30 range, which is very hard to pass up.

There are many iPod radios and alarm clocks on the market which may be able to compete against the Sound 100 iPod on price. The competition does not come close on engineering.
The remote allows you to completely control your iPod! That means menu control and navigation in addition to the standard FF, RW, PLAY, STOP, and PAUSE functions. This is so simple, yet few devices have this ability. The Line-in and auxiliary jacks can connect other MP3 players (Creative, Zune) sans the menu control.
The speaker is monaural, but optimized to prevent distortion. At the highest volume the sound won't hiss. If you like modern design, the Eton is one of the best looking. It is sleek, COMPACT and light. Wish this guy was all-black, but I can live with the silver toned speaker.
Most of the shortcomings are from the radio aspect of this device. The internal AM antenna is below average. You can use an external one, and most users will need to.
The features could be better. There are only 10 programmable station presets. The RDS broadcast data is only 8 characters at a time. The screen is hard to read; you have to be right in front of it. There are no external RCA, speaker or subwoofer jacks, only line out. There is no EQ, treble or bass control and no way to adjust the backlight.
This radio came out in January 2007, well into the HD radio era. Only 10 presets? Why no speaker or subwoofer jacks? Why didn't they add Short Wave or HD capability?
If you only need an alarm clock radio, there are better options. This unit is above average on FM but below average on AM. Competing products by Sangean, BA and Sony have higher ratings at this price.

I was drawn to this item because it has great features. HD Radio and iPhone dock in one package is a really good idea. Ever since I've discovered HD Radio (in my car), normal radio sounds inadequate. After researching online for a few weeks, I bought HD171 and received it yesterday. Let's look at various aspects of this device.
What's in the package
- Radio (HD 171)
- AM antenna
- FM antenna wire
- remote control
- 3 dock adapters for different ipods (or iphone)
- manual, warranty, etc.
HD Radio:
Since HD Radio was a big requirement for me, this is the first feature I tried out. After plugging everything in, I tuned into my favorite radio station. The sound was acceptable but I didn't see the HD logo come on. After waiting for 5 minutes I started moving the FM antenna wire around to get a better signal. I finally found a good position near the window. After 15 seconds of linking, I finally heard the HD goodness. But that didn't last very long. The signal kept losing. So I relocated the radio next to an open window. HD signal was much strong and I was able to listen to HD-2 channels too but the signal would always drop after a few minutes. There were just way too many drops and cuts for me to enjoy the music. It might perform better with an amplified antenna but given that I live in middle of a city, I expect the radio to work without add-ons (I had no issues with reception in my car).
iPod / iPhone Integration:
After being disappointed with the HD Radio, I tried the iPod dock with my iPhone. Everything worked well there. I was able to listen to the songs stored on the phone as well as those played by apps like Pandora and AOL Radio just fine. The iTunes tagging feature also works well but once you tag a song playing on radio it takes about 30-40 seconds for transferring it to iPhone.
Sound Quality:
I have been using Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere with my iPhone and had been fairly happy with the sound considering the form factor. I expected more from HD171. The max sound level is 35 and it does get loud for a medium sized room but there isn't much clarity. It really does sound like low end radios rather than something $150-$200 range. The bass is lacking lows, and Highs and Mids are both off.
Clock / Alarm:
I liked the fact that this device can sync time with iPhone. I noticed that it did so the moment I docked my iPhone. After a few hours I noticed that the time was stuck and the display kept flashing the message "Time Sync". After removing the iPhone, the time started incrementing. By the night, the time showed as "38:04" (!). I'm not sure why it did so or what that means. Re-docking my iPhone corrected the time but it still wouldn't increment. Due to this, the alarm clock wouldn't function either. I was able to set the alarm but it never went off.
Build and Looks:
It is a bit heavy but that's probably due to the speakers. Mostly plastic construction and feels cheap in certain portions. Doesn't have the chic look that's associated with Apple products and related accessories. There are two knobs on the front, volume and tuning. They feel flimsy and I was worried they would wear quite fast. The LCD display is amply lit and the dimmer has 4 levels and a way to turn it off. Buttons on the top panel are a bit stiff and don't always register when pressed.
Remote Control:
It's nice to have a remote control. It is IR so it needs a line of sight and it didn't work beyond 7ft. It has buttons for: power, mute, source selection, presets, memory, sleep, play, next, prev, volume, snooze/dimmer.
Control Panel:
The controls on the radio have all the buttons you'd need. But there is a flaw. You cannot move between HD channels of the same station. The tuner jumps to the next frequency. The only way to achieve this is using the remote control (next/prev buttons).
Documentation:
The documentation is quite poor and does not even talk about HD Radio. The Troubleshooting section is dismal.
Final words:
I had great hopes from this device but considering all the issues, I'm sending it back to Amazon. I hope to see a better attempt in future at HD Radio and iPhone integration.

Sangean WR-2 Digital AM/FM Tabletop Radio, Walnut Review

(More customer reviews)This is a very appealing clock radio with digital readout that gives you name of song, artist, and other information as you listen. The mono aural speaker is warm and full. The radio is attractive, solid and well-built, evincing nothing cheap or plastic-laden. The AM is very good. Most FM stations come in strong. But hard-to-get FM stations like 89.3 from Pasadena (I live 40 miles away in Torrance) requires that I move the FM antenna, but this is not a big deal, just a nitpick.
Most listeners will love the WR-2. But if you're a radio buff like I am and enjoy the outstanding FM reception of the Grundig S350, the Kaito 1101 and 1103 models (called Degen in China), then I'm afraid the WR-2 will disappoint. To be fair to the WR-2, the more expensive Bose radio suffers the same problem of mediocre FM reception.
Another important point: Because this radio has a remote control, it works great in your computer office. You can keep the WR-2 six feet or so away from your computer and avoid interference as you toggle stations and volume with your remote.
Post Script: Make sure to turn on the external antenna switch in the back of the Sangean. It improves reception by tenfold.
Update: I bought a second WR-2 (in black) three years after the first and get excellent FM reception so apparently the radio has improved in newer models. New rating: 5 stars.

Tube 2.1 WiFi Internet Radio Review

(More customer reviews)Just to clarify: although Amazon (or seller Ritz Camera) has it listed as a Yamaha product, it is not. It is made by OXX Digital, a Danish company that sells various internet radio products.
If you are interested in purchasing, I would highly recommend OXX Digital's website to view the PDF brochure detailing its technical specifications in depth.
The key selling point for me was the AUX connector in the back -- I have mine connected to a Stereo Receiver. The sound from the built-in speakers is decent, but to really appreciate your favorite music you have to hook it up to a powered system.
Setting up was easy. The user panel is very intuitive; I connected it to my WAP enabled wireless network in less than 5 minutes.
The only two things I would consider unsatisfactory on this unit are the mini remote control, and that it only recalls 10 stations.
My next internet radio would have to address these shortcomings, as it would be great if the remote was full sized and the unit could store around 100 stations.
Overall I would recommend this unit to anyone interested in a solidly built internet radio with reliable operation and a good price point.

(More customer reviews)I was disappointed with the quality of my i765. I purchased this because I was very pleased with the earlier Cambridge Soundworks CD740 I purchased. That CD740 has given me great sound for years, and never had a problem -- its still going strong. I thought the i765 would be essentially the same quality, but with the added benefit of the easy iPod connectivity. Its true the iPod connects nicely, but the unit operates less satisfactorily on two counts. First and most important, the CD/DVD player stopped recognizing and playing disks. Cambridge initially said this was possibly due to static buildup and gave me a relatively easy though annoying procedure which fixed it. However, after some time, that procedure stopped being effective and now the it just doesn't play CD's at all. The display says "No Disc" even when there is one inserted. The second issue is that the unit simply operates slowly. There is an unexpected 1-2 second delay after most commands. And even when the CD was working, it seemed to take 30 seconds before the unit would be able to play a disk after it was inserted. This isn't a major issue, but does take away from my perception of design quality and it definitely feels inferior to the CD740 unit. The cd740 made me a real Cambridge fan, but the 765i has made me look elsewhere for quality.

(More customer reviews)The sound quality is amazing for a 3.5 inch speaker, with very smooth bass that really fills a room. When the radio first comes on at your preset alarm time, it is whisper quiet, slowly building in volume level to whatever level it was when you last used it. It's a very pleasant way to wake up.
The alarm-setting process is easy to control, and you can be awakened with the radio, an alarm sound, or it can try waking you with the radio at first and then use the standard alarm if you don't wake within 5 minutes.
It has an automatic brightness control that dims the display when the room gets dark, with 20 levels of adjustment that you can control manually if you're sensitive to light in your room.
The radio tuner is quite good -- it digitally locks on to the signal, with very little if any static on weak signals. It's the strongest radio receiver I own, including the one in my car. If the built-in antenna doesn't suffice, you can even connect an external antenna to a port in the back.
The build quality of this radio is very high, giving a feeling that it's truly a luxury product, something to be proud of owning.
One of the coolest features -- and there are several -- is that it can hold its own radio and clock settings if the power goes out, without need for a battery. It uses a capacitor to maintain a charge, which it says is good for one or two days without being plugged in. I've only tested this feature moving the radio from one room to another, but it held all settings.
Overall, this is a great clock radio. I'm so glad to have it instead of using my cell phone to wake me, a poor substitute in comparison to such a fine product.

(More customer reviews)One of the most attractive radios in its price range, well constructed, lacking cheap materials, and having a crisp, full monoaural speaker, the Tivoli Model One is an analog radio, which means you have to use the dial to find the sweet spot every time you tune to your favorite station. This can be a chore for some. Additionally, the reception is about a grade B+ for FM and B for AM. Remember, the Model One doesn't come with a telescopic antenna like the slightly more expensive Tivoli PAL. You only get a little pig tail in the back, which can prove inadequate for hard-to-reach stations. Yet understandably it's easy to fall in love with this radio, so what do you do? I'd recommend buying it. But instead of buying an external antenna to strengthen your reception, spend a hundred dollars (or 65 on the Chinese Degen 1103 model) on the Kaito 1103 digital radio. Easilly fitting on top of the Tivoli, the 1103 has the double the FM strength of the Tivoli and has over a hundred digital presets. The problem with the Kaito 1103 is its little speaker. But the Kaito is small enough to fit ontop of the Tivoli Model One and be hooked up with an audio cable through the Tivoli's provided "Auxilliary In" connection. So now you have erased the weaknesses of both radios and maximized their strengths in what will be the best "radio" you can buy. The cost for this radio hybrid, about two hundred dollars, is still less than half of a Bose radio, which, in spite of its nice speakers, suffers from mediocre FM/AM reception.
The Tivoli Model is such an attractive, well-made radio that it's worth combining it with the super-performing Kaito 1103. By itself, however, I'm afraid it's more looks than performance.

Cambridge SoundWorks Radio 720-High Performance AM/FM Table Radio with iPod Dock - Onyx Review

(More customer reviews)I've always been a big fan of Bose products for their incredible audio quality - I've also had an issue with how expensive their products are. Cambridge Soundworks' products match that quality at 1/5th the price. Also, CS products don't have the aggravating proprietary cables that Bose insists on using, so you can pair the components with most other audio equipment. This particular radio has a marvelous, rich sound, clean highs, and beefy low-end that you wouldn't expect from a radio of this size. I get consistent, strong FM reception by using the included dipolar antenna. The included ipod dock matches the clean sound and makes this radio a great choice for a bookshelf audio system. The radio also has an auxiliary 1/8" input so you can plug in your CD player, turntable, 8-track, reel-to-reel, whatever. Both the radio and the dock have their own separate wireless remotes.
Oh, and it works great as a clock radio too - it has 2 alarms, weekday settings, tone alarm, favorite station memory, time and date, and wake to music from your ipod.
Truly a great value for the money.
***Update 08/06/10***
I would agree with the other reviewers that a volume control on the tone alarm would be nice . . .There's certainly no problem with being awakened by it. Also, the new Ipod touch (2nd & 3rd generations) do not charge while on the dock. They sound great, but it's a bit annoying that it drains the battery power.
One other cool feature of the dock is that you can run a video out to your TV and watch movies from your ipod with the CS radio as the sound system. I haven't done this yet, so I can't speak to the actual video quality, but it's a nice option to have.
I still stand behind my assertion that you can't find a better sounding audio unit at this price point. While the product has a few quirky design issues, the sound coming from this radio is incredible.
***Update 9/24/10***
While the dock works to transmit the audio signal for the new generations IPOD touch, it does not charge. A little irritating, but I think I know why this is such a good price. It works beautifully with the IPOD clasic - charging and transmitting.
Still sounds marvelous. I have it in my office on top of a bookshelf and people think it's a professionally installed sound system :). Radio reception with the dipolar antenna has been flawless, and my office is at the back of a very old brick building.

I have long been a radio fan and in recent years subscribed to Sirius Radio, listen to stations on iTunes and love internet radio stations, especially Pandora. This little baby combined all of my interests into one small clock radio. While the sound of the speakers won't blow you away, add a small set of speakers (I am using an extra set of Logitech Computer speakers with sub that only cost me $40) and you have a great sounding system (depending on the station you listen to). The construction is ok, although for over $200 I would have liked it to be a bit sturdier, but it is a clock radio so it isn't going anywhere. This model also has an iPod dock - great for listening, but it won't charge your unit. Overall I am extremely happy - iPod, Sirius (although you have to upgrade your on-line account for $2.99/month to use with this), Pandora and over 16,000 internet radio stations! One of the big advantages of the Grace radio is 99 presets - most other radios I looked at had alot less.
My biggest problems these days is trying to figure out what I want to listen to first!! Highly recommended.

The NPR Radio by Livio Review

(More customer reviews)The Livio NPR radio is an internet radio that is dedicated to locating and storing "favorite" NPR stations from nationwide sources. Additionally, it's possible to access 16,000 worldwide streaming stations (Livio's information) that are not NPR affiliates.
Shipment was prompt, and the radio responded appropriately upon installation. The wi-fi connection required some minimal expected procedures, and it worked as intended. I read one reviewer elsewhere who complained about the poor quality sound from its 3" speaker. Well, that's a big "DUH," IMHO. I would not have bought the radio to listen only through its built-in speaker. When I read that it had stereo audio outputs, I fully intended to play it through my existing home stereo system, and in that setup it sounds good. The radio's own speaker is an adequate monitor speaker, but I doubt that it's intended to be the primary aural output.
Through my wi-fi connection the drop-outs and re-buffering procedures have been nearly non-existent. I experience mostly uninterrupted good stereo sound. If I didn't have wi-fi, I can connect to my DSL modem with the ethernet cable that's included in the package.
My main complaint (preventing 5 stars) is the poorly organized instruction manual that accompanies the radio. One audio connection diagram is clearly wrong, and it's contradictory to a correct one on a facing page. A procedure is introduced on one page and obscured by information that is not helpful, but 2 pages later clarifying information is found. I called those flaws to the attention of a tech support person who said he would pass the information up the line.

Boston Acoustics Horizon I-Duo Volume limit problem: Mine came with "hospitality mode" enabled, and volume would not go past 19. To fix: turn on unit, turn volume all the way down to 00, push and hold volume button for 10 seconds until beep then release, then turn volume all the way up to 50 (max) and push and release volume button.
After one email to Boston Acoustics support, I received a courteous response within 12 hours with instructions.
